Having a blast with Attila Total War, very stable release, no bugs or crashes so far, nor abysmal loading times or odd features or AI stupidity unlike R2's launch (using the R2TW:EE engine/features anyway, still it's CA!), with family tree and tons of new RP aspects, including hording mechanics where you can move/upgrade your "settlements" along with you - finally REAL nomadic mechanics.

Definitely recommended if you're a fan of that time period. Going to be on this for a while. Still looking for things to be picky about, they did a really good job with this standalone expansion.

What settings are you running Jackal? Is what they talk about in this true? What's the gameplay like?

What settings are you running Jackal? Is what they talk about in this true? What's the gameplay like?

Running mid to high, it's more FPS hungry than R2, though I have unit size on ultra.

Gameplay so far is great - I just spent several hours on it, no crashes or bugs yet for me personally, which is quite surprising from CA. Here's a list of my impressions, playing as the Huns on hard difficulty:

- Hording mechanics are awesome, completely nomadic gameplay as the Huns. You do everything on the move!

- Strategy layer is overhauled, you not only have to worry about food but sanitation as well, also religion.

- RPG elements are overhauled, including family tree, offices, political marriages between factions.

- UI improvements IMO, not perfect but it's much more like S2 (look at the skill trees), unit banners are now floating boxes instead of flags but it's actually quite easy to decipher in battle.

- Bastard breeding!!! (Yes, my current general - a young dude I invested in to train/develop, was married to a shrewdish wife, which gives a higher chance of infidelity lol, he now has 2 illegitimate bastards   ), and yes you are able to divorce, but I decided to make him my bastard breeding machine (also the general I'm using to rampage the ERE)

So note: If you are dissatisfied with R2TW's lack of connection to your characters, ATW brings it back with a vengeance! It's the best implementation of the family tree I've seen so far. You can also have appoint them governors instead of just generals - but I haven't done so yet, I'm still on my Hun campaign.

- Complete annihilation possible including tribute states, fits the time period, very dark setting. Attrition mechanics also overhauled.

- Battlefield and strategic AI are both competent in my opinion, akin to R2TW:EE's AI, patch 16. Nothing too new that I have noticed, they do provide a challenge. Unit cohesion is good too so far but I haven't tested that extensively yet, I'm playing 100% cavalry.

- Unit morale works alot better than R2TW, they rout but regroup nearby if behind friendlies. This means as the Huns I had to make decisions whether to chase down the enemy or stay within my battle line, unlike in R2 they are much braver and regroup more often - just when you rout 3-4 units (and think you've already won), if your attention is taken elsewhere, those units will regroup and flank you. Good change IMO.

- Difficulty is good, still wiping the floor with everyone (I am the Huns after all) but challenging to keep casualties low at times, wrong moves can be fatal to your forces.

- Battle length is balanced in my opinion as well, even as the Huns with cavalry charges etc.

So far so good, I had a peek at metacritic though, initially it was bombed like DAI at launch - From looks of things it comprised mostly of folks unforgiving of Rome 2's launch. However, looks like it's now sitting on 8/10 user reviews (consistent with critic reviews it seems). Also based on the TWcenter too on a poll (~67% voted between 8-9/10 out of 143 voters)

http://www.twcenter....te-Attila/page5

So it turns out I'm not the only one with a good first impression of the game, this feels more like a Shogun 2 release than a R2 or Empire release. Now before bed, going to annoy the ERE abit more with my bastard breeding general! :D

Hell at this rate, I won't be able to wake up for work tomorrow. Need to sleep, anyway all in all, I have no complaints with A:TW yet, but I have merely scratched the surface. It's hard, I'm glad I started on H difficulty instead of VH. Money is harder to come by, you have to loot, you have to sack, and you need your tribute states. The strategic layer can be complex coming from R2TW but I'm loving it!

If there's any complaints to be had so far, I would say, the battle map changes are not as impressive as the campaign map overhauls. The flaws of TW to this point still remain, loading screens for one, but it's a solid game. I also thought I had an end turn bug but all I needed was a bit of patience - on some turns, 1-2 minutes extra was needed after the last faction turn.

I'll play the game over this week and see more flaws, but overall I'm happy with my purchase. So far the game seems to refuse to crash hours into the game. The whole experience so far is very immersive, and I can't wait to get back from work tomorrow to continue breeding more bastards.

And there I swore not to buy this one out of spite and because CA made me wait 16 times for a fixed game in a timeframe of 15 months, with Rome 2.

But there are positive reports from users all over the web and my resistance is crumbling slowly, but steadily. Damn it! :D

But there is one thing I'd like to wait for: For many, the strategy part is the most important. But I think both strategy and battles are important and I like to have the blood dlc in the game. Why they decided to not include it right away is beyond me, but my suspicion is that it'll cost for ATILLA. Oh how I hate CA for their DLC policy. <_<

But in the end they're the only ones who make immersive games over interesting historical eras. So it's either them or nothing...

Aaaaaand....I through. 202 hours wtf.

Despite all the flaws it is a very good game imho. Not only the best Dragon Age game since DAO, but I'd even go so far and say it's the best Bioware game since Mass Effect; DAO excluded. The first games of a series tend to be those we hold dear in our memories, the universe is fresh and new. ;)

Of course one has to work a little to sort the non-quest-maps with the very awesome main-quest-areas or otherwise risk getting bored very quickly. Granted. But what stops one to simply...do that? There are only two other solutions to the problem: a) Much, much more linearity, Bioware taking us by the hand and leading us through a narrow path from beginning to end or B) no additional maps.

Yes, there were bad maps. Empty, boring. But there were also good ones. I see it as a bonus, took it for what it was and overall enjoyed it. It gave good visuals, interesting lore and nice new gear most of the time. And all the dragon fights where awesome, too.

The finale and some of its revelations were quite surprising and keep us guessing. There is something great on the horizon...but...no spoilers, don't worry.

I very much hope that Bioware do these revelations justice by not continuing what has a very great potential as small, cheaply produced DLCs. Remeber the little story-DLCs from DAO? Yeah that wouldn't do it justice, like at all (you'd need to see the finale and prologue to understand what I mean ;)).

We need a fully fledged addon or I would even be willing to wait a few years for a true sequel. Please, Bioware!

Either you are joking or you just finished smoking some weird stuff :-)

I find that 7 hours for me was enough boredom for a lifetime:-)

Here is 7 hours I will never get back :-)

Even if the game works flawlessly for me, the mini map sucked hard :-)

Having to run around all over the place to find Corporal what ever his name was :-)

What I wanted for the mini map was something like ME2 or ME3 where you could select the mission let's say talk to Corporal so and so and mark it as active quest and the mini map would reflect that :-)

And a better story please, I got bored real quickly :-)

Hold on a second, I had to reread this. You're talking about Dragon Age: Inquisition?? Are we thinking of the same game here.

This is my opinion. ;) Nothing more, nothing less.

Plus, I'm sorry to say that, and no offence MatrixGirl: You don't know the story. You only played for 7 hours. I believe you when you say it bored you quickly. People like different things. But when you want to judge a story you need to experience / read / watch it from start to finish.

Have you ever seen a book critique were the author only read the first 50 pages or a movie review after leaving the cinema half-way through the movie? I don't think so.

There are some basic points we can argue about. The horrible pc-controls, some of the empty maps, the skill system that was not thought out well and so on.

Unless it is me who does not know how to use the mini map :-)

But you must admit , it is hard to find your way in DAI :-)

I will stick to the Witcher series and Deus EX Human Revolution directors cut :-)

But will admit I did like DAO even if there was no voice over to speak of, and I loved all the ME series :-)

Indeed. Yet I cannot stress enough that it needs some work of the player to not get bored. I played it like A main quest B bonus map C main quest D bonus map. To not get bored by the more repetitive empty maps. And it worked.

This IS something you could definitely hold again Bioware, yes. Being forced to do this or otherwise get bored easily is stupid. But...I just did it that way and it worked. Simple as that.

Do I really have to apologize for liking this game? I hope not lol. ^^ Critique where critique is due, but I usually try to be reasonable and don't condem something as a whole for some of its flaws. That's how I roll. Sorry if you don't like it. ;)

But you don't have to, because I don't intend to fight over it.

I have left movies before after 45 minutes because they insulted my intelligence and were boring :-)

Or suffered through other movies just to say I saw it and it was bad :-)

But DAI falls in that category for me :-)

And you are free to do so. However, you should be prepared for raised eyebrows were you ever to do a review on said movie or critisize the reviews of other people who saw the complete movie. ;)

The entire story rested on the ending (DLC). It's not inspired at all. Your character does nothing to shape current events. Cory is a puppet, his fate is sealed from the start, as is your characters.

When people say 'omg dat ending, great story' these are the same kind of people who click on the stories on facebook which say 'she put some lime in her drink and omfg you won't ever guess what happens next'. It's not a good story, it's just clickbait, in the case of DAI its just to get people whet to spend money on the future DLC or expansions or whatever it is they plan to release.

The mage / templars is a non-issue because it just affects a single puppet and the mage storyline is soooooo bad. Time travel? Are you kiding me? lol

Winter palace is dull and again only affects things that happen in the epilogue. The rest of the game is on rails and the final confrontation is anti-climactic.

And this is coming from someone with 2 complete playthroughs. The minimap was the least of my issues (And it's so bad I wouldn't call it a minimap, it's a sonar. Just blips on a radar you would get in a budget submarine. So bad).

idk man saying this game is better than ME2, wow.

I would not do a review, I would say the movie or book was boring to me and did not finish it, because that is how uninteresting it was to me :-)

I will not fight over DAI to me it was boring and totally fell asleep after 7 hours :-)

And to the new player who has never played an RPG they may feel the same ;-)

But that is my opinion you are entitled to yours :-)

And I do not raise eyebrows here when I say it was boring since most people agree with me :-)

I very much like ME2 and ME3, but with ME everything was new, the universe, the lore, it just flashed me more. ME2 and 3 were building on these strenghts but they were still "just" building on them. ;)

I respect your opinion. Some people are, for instance, much more able to notice plotholes or illogical things in stories than I am. I watch a movie with these people, they say it was rubbish while I really liked it. So? People are different. ;)

Of course, now if you tell me that your impression of the story is a fact while mine is just wrong I might just accept that. /sarcasm. Sorry, couldn't ressist. :P
