Not being someone who played it in any day, I had to look up Terminus and having done due research I would have to come odown on the side of No. There is no story mode in ED, no linear narrative, in fact no narrative that involves the player at all.

Sure, stuff happens in the galaxy, and you can read the Galnet news to keep up with events- you can even decide to become politically motivated and join certain factions. I plan to get out of federation space and align myself with the Alliance factions once I upgrade my ship enough to care about anmything more than staying alive and solvent. But there is nothing pushing you on missions or anything like that. If you choose a job that has a political slant, it is because you choose to do it- and live with the consequences - not because there is an over-aching story that you are participating in. There is no end game in ED. None. Just you in a persistent universe that does not care if you live or die.

I never played the original Elite, but if it helps, those who have swear it is the exact same game, but with stunning graphics.

It's great, but only if you are specifically after what it offers. Squadron 42 (Star Citizen's upcoming SP game) sounds more like Terminus to me.

It sounds more akin to EVE than either Terminus or the original Elite, which I played on my Commodore64 and never had a multi-player or online (what's that?) component.

Considering the number of folk bitching about it not being like Eve and how much better it would be if it were on the forums I think perhaps your off the mark. lol!

Loads of old Elite fanatics generally converge on those very people swearing black and blue it is exactly like the original Elite just bigger na better looking and that is exactly what they want thank you very much- such posts generally end with a 'run off with thee whippersnapper' comment or three.

Here's the forum link if you want to go check it out.

And there is a solo mode as well as open game, remember. ;)

Sounds more and more interesting.

Do you recall what size the download was?

I see everything from 2GB to 4GB+, and it is apparently not available on disc?

 ... or is it?

I keep seeing references to the game disc but the site only offers digital download.

Was the disc a backers only reward?

I kind of stopped playing DX:HR in the mid-to-late stage of the game... mainly when all my mod work & modified weapons were taken from me and the only things I got back were a hand full of mod canisters, my modified assault rifle and my modified missile launcher, with no ammo for either. they took my decked-out pistol, it was my preferred weapon... I really liked my pistol. *sigh*

This is actually the DLC which was integrated into the game later - it was only accessable seperately before - hence the re-release of Deus Ex Human Revolution.

The thing is though...you get all your stuff back at the end of this mission. :P

Just do what I did, use a mod that eliminates the need for "batteries".

Use stealth and beat the living daylights out of everybody.

Good way to let off some frustration ...

KilrB, the way I understand it- not being a backer myself mind, I bought the game after release - is that they fully intended to make it offline as well as online, but in the end the sheer magnitude of the task defeated them and they realised they just couldn't produce a functional offline game. As I understand it the procedural generation of the universe has a lot to do with the situation in that regard. It isn't an EA DRM situation, it's just the way they think they have to do it. Squadron 42 will be out *fingers crossed* later this year, it will be interesting to see if that is offline or not as well.

From what I can garner from the forums, the squabble over refunds came about because Frontier decided to base their refund policy on how much time was spent playing the game online as backers- those who didn't play online got their money back, those who'd been playing online are having troubles. This is of course, my understanding only as someone who had no part in the backing process and is completely on the fence about the matter.

You can play in Solo mode, which cuts down on the data usage, Open is set up with peer to peer instancing so that is apparently data hungry, but solo apparently is not. It's a fun game- as long as you don't go into it looking for a 'game' as opposed to a simulator. But if you're like me and you get a kick out of pretending to be a hapless loser trying to keep your ship in the sky in a vast, lonely and dangerous galaxy with no more direction than your ambition and the next paying job, it's beyond awesome.

:D

Squadron 42 will be offline last time I checked it is a fully scripted 50+mission offline campaign that can be done co-op with your friends if you desire when the campaign is over you can use that character along with whatever earnings they have earned as a start off point in the persistant universe.Or you can skip the campaign altogether and jump into the PU Deep End.Personally I'm doing the campaign first to give me a nice stack of UEC to start my career as a marine merchant for the Org that I'm in.

... I thought Squadron 42 is for Star Citizen.

We started off talking about Elite: Dangerous, I'm not sure where/how Squadron 42 got into the mix but ...

Star Citizen is another game that has had my intermittent interest, is Squadron 42 going to be offline or online "solo" as ED's solo mode is, apparently?

Will SC have a solo mode or will it be even more "like" EVE than ED?

... and for the record I dislike this move to digital download being the only way to get a game. I want a disc!

Squadron 42 for Star Citizen will be fully offline unlike E.D's "online solo" mode you will however have the option should you choose to do Squadron 42 in a "online Co-Op" with friends you invite in, in a fashion Similar to how they did it in some of the Saints Row games.Mainly because Squadron 42 has a fully scripted story much like DAO with a defined starting point with multiple possible endings based on the choices you make during the campaign.

From what Chris Roberts said it will be possible for you to quit the UEE Military before the end of the campaign and go Rogue/Take early retirement/become a Pirate etc though it would be in your best interests to finish out your full "tour of duty" as you are given "citizenship" as reward for your service ( essentially a free pass to any system/planet in UEE space) as well as any salary you have earned.

I am looking forward to SC :-)

We can play together :-)

And Chris Roberts is not a console developer:-)

So we are pretty sure it is going to be a great game :-)

He is the guy who did the Wing Commander series, and people always told they were amazing games for those days :-)

Saw the video of SC and I will be getting the game when it comes out for sure :-)

I will even get a joystick for it :-)

Recommended sticks: Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS X (very good stick for the price, used one for several years) or Saitek X52 Pro (high price, sometimes you can get one in very good condition off of ebay for a fair price). My current joystick.

Not recommended: Saitek X52, the non-pro-version.

Not only is the material considerably cheaper, but the software also has a bug that lets your pc BSOD / insta reset. It's the programming part of the software. Whenever there is a feature with a name longer than 16 characters, the software crashes and the strick crashes and hardware failure often means BSOD. The stupid thing is that there are names with 16 characters right out of the box after you install the software. Saitek knows of the problem for years and have done **** about it...

Partial recommendation: The Saitek X55 looks nice and feels nice, but you need HUGE hands.

I mean, admitedly, I'm not a tall guy and my hands are pretty small but I guess yours are at least the same size. Try the stick in a local shop, but I bet you wont be able to reach most of the buttons on either the stick or the throttle without moving your hands. ^^ The stick is made for Chewbacca sized pilots lol.

Lol! It was ME who started the Star Citiaen thing KilrB- Invisible Man was wondering if ED was like Terminus and I looked into Terminus and said no, but Squadron 42 sounds a bit like it. So the blame lies here in the antipodes lol!

I'm keen on Squadron 42 and Star Citizen, not the SC now though, racing and arena dog fights are just blah to me. But when it is finished...well, Ill see what the $$ are but for Squadron 42 I'm a definite in.

KilrB, ED is 3.5gb to d/l and you can get a disc. They let you d/l while your disc in coming too I thinbk. I didn't bother because the postage to Oz made it more expensive and I was coming off the $90 flush that is DA:I. But yeah, hard media is okie dokie with Frontier it seems. :)

You can only do one commander at a time though, just so you know, and there is quasi perma death insofar as you can lose everything iffin you don't buy insurance. You'll be given a basic ship and have to start over without insurance.

This guy does a killer starting out in ED series - with a broad brogue to boot- check it out if your thinking about giving it a go. I found him 10 days into the struggle, I mean game, and wish I'd found it earlier. Be warned, Steep Learning Curve. And that's not just coming from me...

Definitely worth it though!

@MG I've downloaded DE HR, but haven't looked at it yet. I was going to play the first ones first, but they are eye scalding on the tv lol! I think I'll try out DE HR first and move on to them later....

I think the market is currently a bit lacking in good sticks to choose from. Low priced models like the Thrustmaster, high priced models like the Saitek X52pro or X55 and nothing in between. So yes, hopefully two years will do it good. :)
