I'm gonna be tinkering with Unity 5 and also UE4. I'm thinking of building a turn based pseudo isometric RPG where story is the focus, and none of this console centric collection/fetch nonsense. I'm still very much invested in this idea of building a module for DAO as a starting point. I'll update once I have some headway in this.

Right now, RE: Inquisition, I'm waiting on the modding community instead of Bioware. I feel confident that sooner or later there will be a mod that makes the game a replay candidate. No idea what form it will take. Maybeso we will have to wait for a DLC that gives the modders something more to work with. In any case, I'm enjoying being frustrated by ME2. Bioware is not dead to me yet. But they're on life support.

My wife and I are moving. After eight years of living in San Antonio, my wife has said her drive to work is in entirely too long and I have said that our neighborhood is devolving into a ghetto. We're closing shop here and hurriedly moving into a small place with our two dogs. Why the hurry? Because we totally didn't understand how fast people wanted to rent our place and throw down money to live where we are totally escaping from. I can't imagine a family of nine moving into our small place, but whatever. I will not be offline completely, but my gaming rig is going into a box in a few minutes. I shall return! I will miss you all and know that I will be in the Writer's Corner through my smartphone.

Safe trip my friend. I hope you'll find a peaceful, quiet little place to live with your family. See you soon online.

I wish there was something like this for a list of top games, spanning a period of one or two years. With the GTX 970 disaster I'm currently thinking of getting an AMD 290X instead. Lower price, virtually the same performance...and fully functional 4 gigs of vram, not just 3,5 + the "if you use me, your performance is screwed" 512 mb bonus bullshit lol. ![]()
It does need considerable more power and gets hoter, but there are a few very good models out there that are both silent and have excellent cooling, even for a very good price.
Although I would definitely need a new PSU for this card (600 watts), I would've gotten a new one for the GTX 970, too (500 watss). With the GTX 970 its voltage spikes that demand a modern psu; with the 290X it's raw power consuption. ^^
Decisions, decisions. ![]()

You know- and I would never say this in the PC Community thread because I'm not an arsehole, I've never had any issues with my Nvidia card at all. I mean one or two crashes- but you get that with every game- and no performance issues either.
All my issues are with the crappy controls, terrible combat mechanics, godawful elf, revolting shiny graphics and the sheer and utter monotony of the game itself. Just a short list . ![]()
I'd love to know if there was a common denominator underlying the Nvidia problems though.

I don't think the GTX970 is bad at all even with it's 3.5 gig memory issue since you won't get close to using it unless you are playing on 4K. If you are running really high resolutions or you intend to, the R9 290X is probably a better choice but if you are sticking to 1080p, the GTX970 should work fine.

I'm pretty sure that is an issue with Frostbite 3 engine and Nvidia drivers. The issue with CTDs is still ongoing with Battlefield 4 which came out over a year ago and it uses Frostbite 3 engine.

According to a test - it was the german pc games magazine I think - even current games do get problems. They tested ATTILA onthe GTY 970 and this game is known to use as much VRam as it can get. According to the test there is some noticeable "lagging" in big battles and especially with the GTX 970.
There is also another issue: Currently Nvidia can set games to not use more than 3.5 gigs in their drivers.
On the one hand I have a general problem with the fact that with a GTX 970 I'd be at the mercy of the manufacturer to keep supporting it with drivers, specially adapted for each game, because I know that when new cards come out, development time is spent on them. Nvidia, having a strong interest for people to buy their new cards and abandon their old ones, could simply stop optimizing their driver releases for the GTX 970.
On the other hand everything is about to change with dx12, according to several news about the the topic. dx12 will turn full control of hardware ressources, specially those of the graphics card, over to the developers. This is generally a good idea for 99% of the cards because developers of games know their engine best and can tailor their games to the graphic hardware which will run on a more unified basis than ever before with dx12. But since they have no special interest in making adaptions for one single kind of card - the GTX 970 - you can't expect them to limit the memory usage of their game. Maybe in the beginning they'll do it, knowing that the GTX 970 is used by many, but no guarantee.
In the end there is major potential for this problem to bite you in the ass. And with Nvidias attitude of playing the whole thing down nobody should expect any support from them. They are finished with the case, they will change nothing, they wont fix the card. Oh and as far as I know there will also be no GTX 965 or 965 Ti to make up for the problematic GTX 970. ![]()

@GODzilla That is valid reasoning.
Maybe they'll put out a GTX980 SE or something.

@GODzilla Maybe you should wait for this to come out.. It's showing up soon.
the Radeon R9 380X (Grenada XT) and R9 380 (Grenada Pro) featuring 2816 cores and 2560 cores respectively. There are no architectural enhancements to both cards and will feature the same 4 GB GDDR5 VRAM and 512-bit memory interface. The pricing of both cards will be made very attractive to gamers since Hawaii still has muscles to render 4K games with playable frame rates.

Oh, yes of course I at least planned to wait for the new 300 series to be released. And if only for lower prices on the 290x. But maybe AMD will mange to optimze that power hunger of the 290x a bit and make a 300-something out of it. I wouldn've even mind that it'll be just a renamed card. If it's more efficient and has a fair price, why not? ![]()

Well, I think they are going from 32nm to 28nm so perhaps it'll run cooler.

That's the new chip I guess. Well that's be top-notch and out of my price league. Most of the cards will be renamed older cards and I hope for at least a few optimizations

Posté 14 mars 2015 - 01:01
Well, it looks like even the renamed cards will also utilized the 28nm process so power savings are a given but will it be a 50W difference or higher? Are you trying to stay in the 200 dollar range?

Posté 14 mars 2015 - 01:04
No, the 200 dollar range lies far behind me lol. A new psu is about 100€ (€ and $ are getting ever closer to 1:1 it seems) and the card itself is around 350€.
Actually the very best modell of the AMD 290X is this, which is cheaper than that: http://geizhals.de/p...h-a1053920.html
