Let's have a little fun with our hardware discussion.  Your budget is limited to $700 US.  Use Pcpartpicker to configure a gaming system that includes OS, keyboard/mouse that is optimally set to run games at 1080P.

Here's mine.  http://pcpartpicker.com/p/Wn3PLk

Wrong video card :-) and CPU :-)

But for that price range you may be able to play TW3 :-)

WD blue is a junk drive go with black maybe 50 dollars more but 64MB of cache :-)

Let's see what you configure on the budget.  There is no 50 dollars more, etc.

I've nothing specifically relevant to add to the "who has the bigger epeen" discussion in hardware, however, I daresay that I'm running a quad-core gen 1 Xeon (that's actually about 4 years old now) and Radeon R7 260 2 GB card and have had no issues with performance in practically any game. I also run a Dell 30" (2560x1600) and an Acer 22" (1920x1080) either or at times, depending on what I'd like to see in resolution/details/performance.

When I previously ran Nvidia and AMD processor chipsets, I had a slew of problems with overheating, just general abnormalities with graphics tearing, etc. I quickly learned the major differences in that Intel chipsets usually run a lot cooler by default, and safer in ROI. I've also seen that NVidia tends to run their graphics in an "emulated" state with games- fullscreen windowed that makes it look like it's actually running fullscreen, as opposed to actually running hardware fullscreen (buffered, etc.) which makes them overall slower on average. (many years observing this)

Not sure what the actual mechanical differences are- as I'm not a hardware driver programmer- but observing the actual differences in terms of efficiency has led me personally to favor ATI chipsets for graphics and Intel for processors. Sure this also means running at whatever the hardware is "locked" at, but it also means my hardware will last longer and I'll be replacing less of it over time. :)

@Sylveria_Reiden  Interesting choice in hardware but just seeing what folks would configure having a specific budget. Just for fun.

I run an Intel haswell I7 5960X 8 core 16 threads with dual ASUS GTX980 Strix Direct CU II and 32Gig of ram at 2400mhzvsoon to be 3000 MHz when the bio is updates comes :-)

Dual 512 Intel 512 gig SSD drive in raid zero :-)

And dual ASUS 4k monitors :-)

Yeah, I'm not "rich" by any means, I just know that I invest wisely with my money. When I buy hardware, I really research it to see how long it will last, how it performs, and what I'll be doing with it. Typically, running "bleeding edge" or OC'd technology will give you issues to deal with over time. It all depends on personal choice- some like pushing the envelope, while others (myself included) prefer to stick with safer bets and usually have a lot less to deal with as a result. :)

But to proclaim that people who have GTX 970 as having a broken card is incorrect:-)

Most sold card on the PC market right now :-)

I run with 16 GB of PC3 1280 MHZ, which stock came with 8 GB, and was my birthday present upgrade to myself a couple years ago. I've noticed that performance generally depends on your bus width, too- as in plumbing, a bigger "main" pipe doesn't mean anything if you're channeling into a smaller one (thus restricting flow) so balancing everything is key as well.

Lots of people make the mistake of thinking one aspect is more important than another- it's really all of it working together in form and fashion that makes a computer run smoothly. Sticking a Ferrari engine into a Volkswagen might yield more engine power- but it doesn't improve handling, for example :)

Eh, I didn't know there was a "point" to be made, rather I was having an interesting side-discussion.

What exactly was the point I was missing here?

Hence why I got an amazing setup :-)

Got a great board top of the line 1.2Kw power supply and built a super rig :-)

Sylveria_Reiden I agree with you on balance but there is actually a very notable exception to that rule right now in the form of  AMD 5350 Kabini.

to build a system using a $700 budget via pcpartpicker that you felt would be good for 1080p gaming.

I'm very familiar with everyone's setup here now especially MG's.  :)   Now you as well. I don't think anyone in the group has a Xeon/AMD combo.

Agreed- but notably it's proprietary in design- meaning upgradability and customizability has been sacrificed from the get-go.

Nice. I'd love to have something like that- but it's not exactly "mainstream" lol
