Yes, but you're also doing rendering outside of gaming, from what I understand.

Nice. I'd love to have something like that- but it's not exactly "mainstream" lol
How many threads does that Xeon have?

GODzilla
So the 970 is a 3.5 gig of VRAM video card it is still 4th on the list :-)
So live with it even at 3.5 gig of VRAM, beats top of the line AMD :-)
And as I said if you can get it in open box due to paranoia and stupidity since it is still a great card :-)
Buy it , you will never play 4K anyway :-)
But it's not a 3.5 gb card, it simply isn't. It's a 4 gig card and games will always try and use those 4 gigs of vram. What's currently stopping them is special care in the Nvidia drivers, with profiles and checks that try and keep a game from using more than 3.5 gigs of vram. That's right, it's not even done by hardware of BIOS, it's the driver and drivers change. Some day, Nvidia could take this "fix" out for the sake of selling new cards.
But even if it stays in...if it fails, and according to some reviews of the recently released ATTILA Total War this already happens in some cases, the games will use more and slow down considerably, because the last 0,5 gigs of vram are slower than a snail uphill.
Here is the source for that btw: http://n4g.com/news/...s-even-in-1080p
Plus with dx12 the whole situation will change, game developers will have the full control over how video memory is used and unlike Nvidia they have neither the ressources nor the interest to specially optimize for one potentially flawed card like the GTX 970.
Many things of this I wrote before and...I will not write them again. Like I said, anyone can believe what they want. I express my opinion, add some facts, a source now even and then you can decide for yourselfes. But constantly repeating that the "GTX 970 is fine" and that only "4k gaming" is supposed to expose its weakness is proven wrong.
Thus my reasoning for not getting the card.

LOL! Are you serious?
*googles to find a source*
Yes, yes you are.
Well, there's half my monthly data limit right there. But it's okay, it'll take me a week or so to download it anyway.
Hope they're going to offer physical discs as an add on to the package I've already bought lol!
ED's procedurally generated galaxy makes even more sense now - 3.5gb.

You should be okay. The game when downloaded with be around 35-40 gigs but when it uncompresses to your hard drive + patch content, it'll be around 100 gigs.

@GODzilla did the GTX970 even fall into your budget range? I thought that's one of the reasons why you had picked the R9.

In the quarter where I live there is also an internet provider - I lovingly call them "the mafia"
- that are backward like this. They charge the usual price for a 16mbit dsl flatrate, but with half the upstream (512kbit instead of 1024kbit) and without the telephone flatrate you get from the competition...oh and of course without the flatrate lol. 200 gigs per month and that's it.
You can get 100 gigs more for just 10€ more per month or 200 gigs more for 20€ more. It's extorsion imho.
Luckily I have a normal telephone connection and knowing this I knew that I can get virtually any other provider...and I did. Not in the mafia, thank god. ![]()

Really? I'd die on that small a data allowance! I use more than that mucking about on youtube! I can't believe Aussie net is better than somewhere else's - this must be some kind of miracle!

350€ for the GTX 970, 340€ for the R9 290X...budget is good for any of them. I would've gotten a new psu for either the GTX or the R9, so that also doesn't matter. The 600w psu is 10€ more than the 500w psu I would've gotten for the GTX, so in the end the money spend is almost the same for either setup. 450€.
GTX 970 is out of the game of course. Looking at the R9, but waiting for the new 300 series, falling prices and such. I have time until The Witcher 3 release, this game will probably demand a new graphic card.

yep, no dsl, cable or fiber out where I am. It's either 4g wireless off my phone which is what I have or satellite internet.
It's also why I keep a backup of any file that is substantial in size on my flash drive.

So anyone in a hurry for W10?
Not really in a hurry, but I will probably get it. Now that I think of it...maybe I'm in a hurry after all. When I really get AMD, and currently it looks that way, I will have to reinstall Windows anyway. Just to be sure its a clean transition. Installing Win7 in May and then Win10 again later that year...meh. I'd rather do it once. ^^

@MatrixGirl Not really. My hardware won't take advantage of it and I'm really not prone to upgrading very often. There isn't really a whole lot going on in Windows 10 that interests me. DX12 should be interesting but that's not exclusive to Windows 10.
