annnd ... they can be modded, easily.
For all the hype about Frostbite, the Creation and X-Ray engines can still be modded to look and play better than it.
So far anyway.
... and don't forget, they can be easily modded.
Except all the "hype" about Frostbite is basically that they can easily consolize the interface and lock down everything that's "troublesome" in their eyes... instead of actually putting the work forward to create something that caters to many platforms.
I think we all agree that there's much better gaming engines available- but all companies want to be the "one" that creates their own engine that works multiplatform with a minimal amount of effort (thus increasing "profit", etc.).
It's sad, really. Sure it's about making money- but sacrificing the gaming industry as a whole to make a quick buck is a little bit extreme to me. Given enough time they're gonna roll us all back to Atari-style graphics and make everyone think it's "modern" or something. Then again, look at how Apple and Microsoft are doing new OS interfaces with "simplicity" and it really doesn't shock me all that much.
Because... "it's all been done before"? I don't think so. I think they've just gotten lazy instead of actually being inventive and creative. Look at all the "reboot" movies coming out... very few original ideas.
