Just killed the Manticore thing on Dragon's Dogma, just finished making new character and choosing a vocation. Think I'm going Strider, seriously the mounting of large enemies and chopping at them is awesome lol ... until they throw you off and then knock you down and feast on your guts... gah!

Playing on normal difficulty. Think I need to enable subtitles, English dubs... ack!

The controls are alright, annoying that walking backwards turns your shield away from the front however, but then again I'm going Strider so going to avoid blocking. UI is atrocious but oh well.

The camera up/down limits need tweaking too, would actually like being able to look up to the sky ya know!

Overall early impressions, but as a port, it's pretty good for a JRPG. Going to keep playing.

Ahahahaha! That's just the intro...it gets much harder, which is fantastic. :D

I'm playing Strider and you get the most brilliant moves as you progress- but it doesn't matter since you can switch vocations mid game if you like.  Read this for a good expose. But seriously- Strider in this game is rogue done right for once. Also someone has made a mod that allows you to re-enter the character/pawn creation screen at any point if you need to fix something. Mod list is here.

What's wrong with the UI? i think it looks great, is there too much clicking? I think my console background vs a CRPG one makes my expectations of UIs very different to you guys though, I've never been troubled by one in any game lol!.

One word of warning- and it won't be relevant for a while but when you trade in Rook for a higher level it will be vital- not all mage types heal. You have to go into the third or fourth ability screen when you are hiring a pawn and check that they have healing spells. I forgot to do this and picked up a strapping swedish mage called Sven- who was next to useless because he couldn't keep my two warrior pawns alive lol! Handsome is as handsome does I guess.

I'm hoping someone comes along and gets a free cam mod going because I feel decidedly let down in  the screenshot department. My character turned out to be a go go boy with a mean streak  and it is freaking hilarious because I accidentally made him swishy by making his stance more toward the ladylike end of the spectrum. He struts along like a male model. So I have a boy band thing going on at the moment and i would love to pose them more for the hilarity. :P

mKzI4Enh.jpg

I never thought about the dubbing thing being the issue with the voice sync, but it makes sense now you've said it.

EDIT: Here is the change your character pawn whenever mod- I needed it for my pawns voice and theoretically I could de-swish my char, but I like him too much like this lol! Oh and here is a save manager that apparently effectively gives you infinite save slots- awesome idea, going to have to try it out!

@Peregrinus- I thought they generally did decent ports with the Resident evil being the only big fail? Not that I've taken much notice, DD is the only Capcom game that I've played on console that I'd rebuy for PC anyway. :) Oh I take that back- MONSTER HUNTER, I forgot about Monster Hunter, I'd totally rebuy that one too.

Was getting my butt handed to me big time until I learnt how to use the Strider's dashing attack to avoid attacks, managing stamina by switching to bow when puffed out, and other tricks... I always charge in to climb the big enemies, playing a Legolas taking down Mumakils! haha

The UI is difficult to sort and navigate for me, but I'm getting used to it. I just came from playing DOS so going to need to adjust. For an action RPG, walking would be best done via holding a button rather than a toggle, but no matter, at least I'm not slamming into walls and I still feel immersed. Still getting used to the controls and gameplay overall, will take me time.

Not happy with the save system though, but oh well. Haven't really got into the pawn system yet, I got Rook as the mage, Kai as my first pawn and warrior (meat shield), and another strider who I forgot the name of heh. Dragons Dragon is the only Capcom game I've ever bought - as I don't play console, the combat is innovative and intense and I can see why it's popular. Story hasn't really gripped me but I'm enjoying the combat so far, never played anything like it.

As for ports, I still remember the days of emulators, as its unsupported the controls/performance tends to be horrible. I use that as a guideline. So far with that low standard, I've seen cash grab ports, which are pretty much just emulators instead of optimising controls/performance for PC. Thankfully Dragon's Dogma, despite several console porty features, it feels like a PC game - almost. Could use work but they did a good job considering JRPG standards (their market is all console)

In addition to my ps3 copy of DD I've got the first three DMC games- hated the second one though, Monster Hunter 1 & 2 (bought a Wii just for MH 2 lol!) and Lost Planet. I like the combat style they bring to the table in general.

I might end up with the last DMC on pc eventually but DD is the only one I really thought needed to be ported- because the consoles simply couldn't handle the game. Imagine playing it with your frame rate regularly dropping below 20... it was not fun. Now it is lots of fun.

When you create your pawn you give them their inclination in the process, Challenger and Scather are the best in the long run...you can buy a potion to change it down the track though or just use the mod to remake them. The save system does suck but that mod I linked for you will fix that, if you are so inclined.

There really isn't a story until later in the game, at first you're just out finding your way and looking for the story pretty much lol! Just you wait though, just you wait.

In the mean time I suggest the hooker pants for your strider too, the armour rating is actually pretty high!  lol!

20 FPS is like the bare minimum for action games, below that is unplayable! Surprised they released it on consoles with such a performance issue. The FPS on PC is solid, and although the graphics are dated, they are fine for me - I still play Mount and Blade: Warband so I'm used to dated graphics as long as the gameplay is good.

So far I'm having alot of fun now that I'm getting used to it. Got my butt kicked at Bitter Isles or something, I thought the blue marker led to an easy side quest!!! Anyway heading back home to lick my wounds and level up abit lol

Thinking of whether to go Assassin or pure Strider, the RPG mechanics are decent. Not too happy with the limited skill slots but it actually suits the pure action gameplay.

And yeah my strider is wearing hooker pants now haha, wear less = more armor!

Going to try the save manager now, thanks for the headsup.

Hahaha! NOOB! I bet that hurt- Bitterblack Isle is the post endgame expansion lol! Yeah, stay away from there until much later in the game lol! Poor Jackal, I hear it is traumatising. I never managed to get my hands on Dark Arisen on console (stupid Aussie stores) so I wouldn't know personally but I've heard much from other newcomers who have ventured forth despite the warnings...hence the not having been there myself.

Go do Lost and Found, Witchwood is great fun!

Oh and Hooray for Hooker Pants! I love my dude in his. :P

Now I want to go play but my game time is still 6 or more hours away *sob*.

I was going to do Witchwood but thought while I'm at the city (it was at night) decided to go to the pier, so I was just accepting as many quests before venturing forth lol - at my peril!!!! There should be a warning prior to embarking that it's a high-level area!

I managed to survive deep fighting the goblins though, resurrecting my pawns as I went who died in like 2-3 hits (same with me!), couldn't kill just one of those darn wolves however, kept following it as it ran away, and then the voice went (Turn back now, there is still time!!!) lol, and... I died. So yeah, back on the boat!

Used all my healing potions by now too... oh well, got some loot to sell at least :D

Lol! I just scoff herbs and stuff for healing- and have a good mage. Pawn's don't level up with you (except for your own of course) so make sure you haven't out grown your current party.

Chasing a solo wolf on BBI? You're brave- wolves hunt in packs you know!

Heh yeah that's when I died when the other wolves showed up, I'm back on the main map though I got my butt kicked again... because of Rook!

Doing the Witchwood quest and Rook runs headlong into 10 bandits, aggroing all of them and 2 of them 'mini-bosses' with shields who kill me in 2-3 hits. And then during the fight another 10 wolves join into the fray!

I need to get new armor for my first pawn (warrior) she keeps dying, then again so dies everyone (lvl 6, I'm lvl 10 now I think). Half the time I'm a medic dodging blows while reviving my dead party! But hey already started the quest so going to finish it first, somehow, then going shopping... need to badly.

Go to the encampment and rent some new higher level pawns Jackal!  Just remember to check the abilities screen on the mage for healing. You need to switch them out so they are at or above your level.

Also, don't forget to upgrade your skills and such while you're there- you should have some healthy discipline points in the bank by now, unless you've already used them that it. :P

Yeah think I have over 2 or 3K discipline points lol

I'm still surviving (after several reloads) though, hopefully enough to finish the Witchwood quest. That biting strike attack for striders is like the difference between life and death at the moment. When done right I never get hit once, but once I do get hit, pretty much dead when staggered unless I can escape. The variance in strategy depending on the enemy I quite like about the game, one thing I also liked about TW3.

Ack! I just realised two of my fancy skills I took as a Strider; downward volley and ensnare, aren't transferable to Assassin. Also failed the herbal medicine quest by entering the city. So missed XP and DCP there.

Assassin also has a block skill that I'm very anxious to get, instead of having to dodge everything, besides it looks so awesome when I saw it in action on youtube.

Might start again... but then I realised the level cap is like 200... and can pretty much farm DCP, and that Strider gains way more balanced stat increases then Assassin and I'm only lvl 14. Hmmm, decisions.

Just redo your vocation at the Inn, I'm sure all the shiny new Assassin skills will make up for any you lose. It's 3k discipline points from memory. Either that or use the mod I linked in earler to redo you character rather than starting off from scratch. ;)

If you're worried about missing a quest you can switch to hard (which is technically NG+), and you'll get a shot at all the quests, then swap back to Normal afterward.

Here's a great reddit thread 15 things I wish I new when I started: Dragon's Dogma.

I spent my session running around Gran Soron rooftops jumping from one to another and sliding and climbing levels for some awesome loot. The game really rewards exploration, if you run the shoreline in Cassardid you will find a hidden bay with a chest. Always take a chance on exploring, you'll be rewarded nicely for being adventurous.

Nice, I especially like the fluidity of the movements, I reckon all games should have this as a standard. The original Prince of Persia 3d and tomb raider introduced climbing mechanics that are so sorely lacking in today's games, in DD you can scale cliffs, roofs, monsters, enemies, the movement just feels so immersive. My very first game I ever played, was Prince of Persia (the original) after all!

Anyone else remember this?

:D

Also why I was very happy with FO4's animations, it's more immersive, yet... STILL NO CLIMBING -.-

Speaking of PoP and TR, one of my fav vids on youtube:

@ Jackal- Have I waited long enough not to sound too odious if I say I told you so now? :D  Honestly every game since DD has left me with a sense of disappointment over the absence of great climbing, DD ruined me with that, it really did.

FO4 would have been so incredible if only we could climb. And they *tried* to do it in DA:I/ME3, but by restricting it to specific areas it lost it's charm. DD lets you climb a good 85% of things that look vaguely climbable- shame about trees though, just imagine if you could scramble up a tree to escape the wolves hunting in packs! :D  Maybe in the sequel?

I'm looking forward to my first Griffin! I am so letting it take me high in the sky- I don't even care if I die from the experience lol!

I remember taking an unfortunate path on my ps3 and running into much higher level than I Chimera, now if only I could remember which path that was so I could avoid it. :P

Oh yeah, but they will definitely need a new engine or major engine rewrite to make it work on Gamebyro. Will also help with the companion pathfinding, they always take the long way which is annoying. In Skyrim I actually had a bat file to summon my companions via console command bc of this limitation.

Yeah trees would be awesome! Though... you can ride... a GRIFFIN?!?!

Holy sh-t... you actually can...

Damn reminds me of DAO, when Riordan jumped ontop of the dragon from the tower. It was just a cutscene but hell never thought they could do it in DD.

So far I decided to stick to my current playthrough, I just gained 2 levels and 2800 DCP too so don't think I need to worry too much about the lost skills, and I'm very selective with the skills too so should be fine. Just killed another cyclops by the beach, first time, climbed on his back, then OMG he knew! Grabbed me off his back and then munched on my head lol! The animations for the creatures are excellent, never thought he could do that! After several other attempts I climbed onto his head and was chopping away with the scarlet kisses move and how the mighty are fallen - with a massive earthquake on the ground as he tips!

It's a good game, but I try not to be too hyped about it, for DD2 I would also have to wait 4 years after the console release for it, unless they make it multiplatform, if the sales on PC are enough they might but I dunno with Japanese devs, their market is not PC friendly so I never usually buy from them. If I buy the hype too much it only leads to the disappointment of not being able to play as I can't use controllers.

But DD:DA is here now on PC and I'm having a blast :)

Also discovered Dark Horse has a new series of Dragon Age Comics called Mage Killers and its set in Tevinter XD

Also just got my invite for the Dreadnought Alpha and was wondering if any of you guys/girls got in too ?

Ahhh, you never forget the first time a cyclops reaches round, grabs you and bites your head off Jackal lol! Don't worry, it won't be the last time haha! I find the sweet spot is on the spine just below and between their shoulder blades - they're like us in that they just can't reach that spot to itch...or grab the puny human stabbing them lol! It's brilliant how they grab you, isn't it? It's hard to believe that no other game has used these mechanics in the four years since DD was released...DA:I in particular you'd think would have employed them.

Tonight I decided to venture forth and open up some more map- knowing full well I'd be walking through the night *shudder*. Ran into an armoured cyclops with a pack of goblins in the afternoon, potracted battle ensues. It's now dusk and we journey on, to be confronted by a pack of Direwolves, despatch them and carry on...into a band of bandits lol!

Take them out and continue...a band of amazons who object to our presence- and put up a really tough fight. It's getting on towards dark as we finish them off (had to scoff some herbs and revive a few pawn for that battle) and then we run into the Amazons mates at nightfall- and another armoured cyclops is trudging down the road towards us all as we begin to battle. In the end the cyclops makes it to us before we'd finished off the amazons so we end up in a mixed fight... there were some really close calls but we made it out alive.

Then we cross a river via some rather dodgy plank bridge set up- all the while I'm stressing about whether I'll see the saurians cloaking mechanism in the dark...only to be mobbed by undead instead lol! Bloody hell, I was glad to see the sun come up on that journey! I'm in the middle of nowhere and expect there will be another full day of adventrung ahead of me next time... I just hope I don't stumble into a high level area! I wish I could remember the map from my ps3 playthrough, but sadly I can't! I do recall the quarry I'm at now containing a cave of much pain and death though so I might bypass it until the return journey lol!

Still no story and I still don't care! :P

Spent the evening nurturing the 24 homesteads in FO4.  All locations are over 70 for general happiness and 2 artillery pieces per location.  4 artillery pieces at the castle with walls completely rebuilt.   It's fire for effect time!   :)

Dreadnought? Haven't seen much of the game either than combat, ship classes etc. Want to see customisation, campaign, something to drive the gameplay.

Otherwise, nothing really that strikes me. The teaser trailer was funny though

@Luna

Heh yeah it gets wild when a random boss joins into the fray. BTW I got attacked by a dragon!!!! Was just exploring 'round south and way too early to take one on... but, of course I tried anyway lol

No kidding, the first shot I made with my bow, hit his heart! Turns out it was his weak spot - lucky shot! Too bad the party didn't last long, died in 1-2 hits, I managed to climb onto his back from his hind legs, was making my way to his head before I got exhausted and shook off. One attempt lol

Coming back for him, and I'm going to ride him!

Peregrinus you make me almost want to get back to FO4... almost! Nothing- not even a full release of SC- could drag me away from DDDA though, god I love this game! But we all knew this lol! However I am looking forward to returning to the wasteland around the time the GECK comes out- which should be a very exciting time to finish the game.

Ahh the dragon by the rocks, am I thinking of the right one Jackal? I met (and died to) that OP for my level bugger on my PS3 playthrough too, it's a baby one if I'm thinking of the right one...and my memory serves me. Bit more fun than fighting the DA:I dragons by slashing away at their knees, right?

Have you been to the Everfall yet? *shudders* I'm steeling myself for it next... I have memories about that place lol!

That was a baby one? ITS HUGE, it's already the size of a freakin' high dragon in DA!!!! He thoroughly kicked my butt and sent me packing lol

It's spoiling me though, I'll never look at dragon combat the same way after Dragon's Dogma, Skyrim/DA just fails miserably now. THIS is how you fight a dragon!

Half the time my character only had one hand holding onto his body struggling to climb it and was holding on to dear life when he bloody took off! Too bad I lacked the stamina to hold on, looking forward to leveling up and taking him on later. I've been to the everfall, but it wasn't as scary as that dragon encounter!

For FO4 I'm waiting for GECK and a guns on back mod myself
