What the hell is up with the reviews?!

XCOM 2 is AWESOME! Been playing all last night with no issues. Playing on 2nd hardest difficulty level and still haven't lost a soldier yet. Perhaps I'm just a Xcom Long War veteran but seriously downvoting Xcom for its difficulty when it's a TRADEMARK of it? =/

Anyway, back to Xcom! :D

Really strange that it would lose points for being difficult.

Also performance issues apparently, alot of Steam reviews are downvoting it until bugs/performance is fixed (like come on, just lower down the graphics! BTW it looks GORGEOUS!) They also don't like the turn limits in some missions, but that's how guerilla warfare should be, and gets rid of overwatch-stalemates. I'm LOVING it, been playing it all weekend lol

Got my butt kicked! Going to keep playing tonight after work :D

Best feature by far is the procedural maps, I'm surprised they got it to work so stable!

There is a possible performance-fix, many positive comments seem to verify it:

And about the turn limit...well there are already enough mods to satisfy anyone. Personally I use the "True Concealment" mod which seems to be balanced pretty well. It lets the counter start only after concealment is lifted, but in turn shortens the general round limit. Sounds fair and plays fair, too. I already tested it in two missions so far.

Getting my ass handed to me now, I may have to turn the difficulty back down to normal heh, I'm starting to save scum! The new aliens scare the crap outta me with all the horrible ways they can kill off your squad!

Mhm...I almost consider these cheat-mods. Of course it's a singleplayer-game, but still...

You can get to a 6 member squad the normal way, no need for mods.

I'm getting my butt handed to me now, so I need my cannon fodder to take the bullets lol

Playing on Commander on my first playthrough, bad mistake - advice for new players, even XCOM1 players -> start on Normal, they weren't kidding when they said "Normal" for veteran XCOM players, "Commander" for veteran XCOM 2 players!

XCOM 2 really punishes you if you dare the same tactics as XCOM 1, even long war! My doom meter is very high and been struggling to keep it under wraps, and on the field getting really surprised at the enemy's capabilities. Don't ever charge a muton in melee! Speaking of horrible deaths the carry unit mechanic is so sweet! Leave no man behind!

You know you've succeeded in making a interesting game when people start discussing the science/math behind it.  heh

"he physical idea behind recoil is the Conservation of Momentum the product of mass and velocity. That said, something moving really fast (with mass) out of a weapon causes the weapon to move in the other direction to conserve this value.

Now onto lasers:
Lasers are concentrated beams of light particles called photons. While photons are massless, they actually do carry momentum as we can discover from Einstein's famous Energy Mass relation:

E2 = (mc2wink.gif 2 + (pc)2
EDIT since superscripts are being uncooperative:
E^2 = (mc^2)^2 +(pc)^2

With E being the energy, m is the mass of the particle, p is the momentum and c is the speed of light.

Since a photon is a massless particle this simplifies down to:
E = pc

or in other words the momentum of a photon is:
p = E/c

Which is very small.
HOWEVER: in order for a laser to damage someone, it needs a lot of energy. Unfortunately red photons as seen in Fallout's lasers are not very energetic. (E is given by the relation E = hf where h is Planck's constant and f is frequency, this solves to about 2.76*10-19 Joules) So in order to get this large amount of energy, there must a lot of photons which  will in turn drive up the amount of momentum as well.

For Gamma Weapons:
Gamma Rays are simply high energy photons with well past a million times the energy of a red photon used in the lasers. However, since they do damage on a similar scale to the laser weapons we can assume the the sum of all of the photon energies emitted per shot is roughly the same as laser leading to a similar recoil.

For Plasma Weapons:
Plasma is highly energized gas so much that molecular bonds break down and electrons are freed from atoms causing an emission of photons. However, these all also have a mass associated with them  and one can imagine that the mass of the plasma bolt is at least that of the bullet if not a bit more and it travels at similar speeds so it should have recoil as well.

Well, that looks interesting. It looks a like a new studio too.. I wonder how long it will take EA to suck their soul out.

Not long I doubt, got to level 6 now had a couple of random CTD's but nothing major Certainly enjoying it,Picked up Tom Clancy's the Division too normally I'm wary of Ubisoft games on the PC that being said while the Closed Beta I played had very limited amount of the available content it ran very smooth with all the details maxed in 2560x1440 so I'm cautiously optimistic.

Also just got a email from Ubisoft announcing The Open Beta on The 19th of February

Pretty disappointed that "The Division" isn't a strategic shooter..  It seems to be a very loot driven action shooter.

Its loot driven to a extent in that you have 4 Tiers of Gear, Green,Blue,Purple,Gold(Lowest/Most Common to Highest/Rarest) and there are certainly some RPG-Lite elements to it in terms of managing your DPS via gear and abilities.along with a basic character "leveling" feature done via xp earned on missions.

There is a element of strategy to it in being able to pick multiple approaches to a target using elevation, cover and working in tandem with other players to draw "aggro", I wouldn't give it any awards, though I found it enjoyable for a few hours with good players both in and out of the "Dark Zone"

Might be worth you giving the Open Beta a go see if its for you I know Nvidia was giving out closed Beta codes like no tomorrow which is how I got mine

Yep online online but you can play wither with others or solo the campaign as only The Dark Zone is PvP all the rest is PvE so in effect the main Story is like a Co-Op SP game

Well, I have less then 1 gig of data usage monthly so I won't be able to download it anyway.

I might be able to try out the open beta.  I think I can get internet from a friend of mine that day.

XCom 2, I tell ya, it's the devil. I successfully end a mission, I tinker around a bit, save, planning on closing the game, doing something constructive...but then suddenly, two hours later I've done the exact same thing for two more missions or so. And then again and again...help meeeeeeee

(starting into three days of residual leave from 2015 plus a free weekend ^^)

Oh yeah it's addictive alright, there's ALOT of depth in it, I have to discipline myself to sleep! And the customisation options are amazing, custom ammo, armor, grenades, heavy weapons, and this is in addition to the standard tier equipment you research. Also, even though you are in a race against time the game gives you plenty of opportunities to stop you losing your campaign but it retains its tension!

I have my old squad back from Xcom1, recruited them as VIPs lol, it's just so cool how you can do that! The new abilities both for your squad and the aliens are familiar enough to not lose the formula of XCOM but new enough to feel fresh! They did a really good job!

In the main menu go to the character pool, make your favorite characters from XCOM1, make them selectable as soldiers, then during your campaign go to your armory, click recruit, and in that pool you should see your VIP troops :)

You can also make selectable as VIPs but that will mean they will show up as engineers/scientists, or dark VIPs which I assume are enemy targets. There's also tons of VIPs on the nexus you can download, like Shaojie Zhang from first game and even Gerald of Rivia I think lol

They start at rookie though, even if you set their class in the character pool, so best time to do this is after getting a guerilla school to train them instead of sending them out as rookies (which are random classes)

Ah okay, I knew that. Thing is it's been a while and I never grew attached so strong to my XCom 1 soldiers, I couldn't recreate them. ^^ Though there was some kind of import-feature I had missed.

Heh, my VIP characters are Long War veterans so that's months of game time spent with them :D

Remember them all by name, Ragnar "Thor" Nilsen the daring assault, Yukiko "Tsunami" Takeda and Christina "Black Widow" Klein the snipers, etc lol

They survived all the way to the end, though mostly because they had rookies to take the bullets for them haha :P

They are doing the same thing in XCOM2, let the rookies do the dying and them the killing!
