Ah, much better lol

Can never live in Queensland again, too humid + the heat. It's unbearable for me.

Reading Cyan's stuff makes me sad that I pulled all my DA fanfic a while back--as part of my RL job I do research, editing, storyboarding and fact-checking (especially for internal consistency, etc) for published authors so I removed a lot of my worst writing from the 'net. The DA story was just for me, so it wasn't good--it didn't have structure, blah blah. I was going to update my "main character's" story post-Inquisition [ironically, it's partly about my HoF girl looking for a way to remove the Taint and running into Hawke & Anders in the process], (I'd call it "The Hero of Ferelden, The Champion of Kirkwall and The Inquisitor Walk into a Bar...") but I just don't have time to update/rewrite it. It's terrible, anyhow. And over 300 pages.

Gods, I do go on. A lot.

For now, speaking as an army brat (my father was in the Australian Services), Mr Griffonclaw, I just want to say "thank you." :)

Bethgael, you are of course hired in whatever capacity you like.  And I would be very much interested in reading your work.

So, I see that everyone is having fun writing and stuff and I'm stuck with law and economics? Not fair, friends, not fair...

Sadly, my only finished and somewhat published (high-school journal and local journal, does that count?  unless you count my contributions here as a comedian) fictional work is in French.

If anyone is interested, I'll send it by email once I find a hard copy of it again.

Not ready to face the Internet with that, gals and guys.

@Bethgael  Don't hesitate to post your writings!  It's really inspirational to see all the various style of writing from everyone, well as keeping our minds off other things.  :)

I'm American. My English needs work and yeah, I looked it up after Duncan said that. I knew it had something to do with pride, but hubris is much more definitive.

Yeah, "the Chantries hubris".
In my humble opinion there is no such thing as absolute language proficiency.
There is always something to explore, to sharpen the understanding.
I am enjoying discoveries I'm making even though personally I mess up a lot of times using a wrong word or not feeling word/sentence connotation. ;)

Law and economics? Sounds like fun.

I'm about to dive into State Education legislation so I can write some units for a university course. Yay! :D

No. Not yay.  Thank gods one of my clients has just finished a draft. Her stuff is so much more fun to go research. ;)

ETA: Yeah, Jackal, I hear you. This year's been unseasonably bad, too. Down south I used to happily go and, say, take the horses out at 40 deg C (which sounds cruel, now that I think about it, but I used to take them swimming a lot), because, at least it was a dry heat. Anything above about 32 up here saps everything.

I mean, seriously. Went to the movies with my mum and 3 of my sons today (Hobbit 3, finally) and coming out of the aircon felt like being slapped in the face with a hot, wet herring.

Because of learning the aforementioned legislation (it's all new to me and mah poor brain processes a lot in dreams) I, of course, dreamed about it, all last night (at least, that's how it felt). Because of all these DA:I shenaningans, I had Alistair and Cullen (along with a char from my RL project) all trying to tell me how it worked. There was a blackboard and everything. I woke up and thought, "bloody hells, the least they could have done is take their framming shirts off" (seriously, what a waste. Thanks, brain. Not). Told my mum this today. Her response: "it's too hot to even want to dream about a threesome, is what it is. Also, your brain is bizarre."

I can't say she's wrong. ;)

ETA2: I just opened up the file, and thanks for the offer, but... sheesh. It's boring, essentially. I mean, it starts with a bunch of spoilers in "Queen Cousland writes her history of the Fifth Blight" style [this was actually an exercise in trying to infodump for people I knew who didn't know the world--I did a fairly popular FFVII Reno fic back in the day that I had people who weren't familiar with the environment love, apart from the fact they felt lost in a setting they had no idea of] that essentially tell you how the story ends [She's Queen, so you know some of the game choices made], and then I go back and start when my Warden is... um... 8--the day Roland Gilmore arrives at Castle Cousland. Mostly self-referential for RP reasons, I guess. Then I switch to Alistair's VP (when he finds out he's going to the Chantry). And... Aedan Hawke's, at Lothering, the day he and his family move there. Although, interestingly, never Anders'... I wonder why... meh. If I was going to update, I'd need to add my Trevelyan girl at Ostwick, and probably Cullen. I'd also have to play that import for DA:I (and I was hoping for a KB&M fix before I do that one). And I do some alternates for in-game story, then fill in the 10 years after the Blight before I thought, nope, stopping that now.  Bleurgh. Too much like hard work for Being Very Bored readers.

Although it does stand as evidence that I picked who Flemeth really was all the way back in 2011, so that's nice. :D

figured I'd repost this again with some additions

Chapter I

A Kingdom falls, or does it?

It’s a warm winter’s night, though it had been an unusually warm winter. But, still the chilly dim blue light caste by the moon, it simply made the landscape laid out before me, seem to be covered by a layer of ghostly frost. I found a chill running through my body, a chill not of wind or temperature, but of sight. For some reason I find this scene of nature so unnerving, as I stare at my reflection, and through my reflection to the ghostly forest, covered by ghostly frost, I feel like an ill omen is staring me in the face. The warn lines tracing my face, the dark shoulder length hair, with a few remaining traces of the dated part in the center, the tired eyes, cold blue in color, seeming to stair back into mine. My train of thought is interrupted by footsteps, not the quiet steps of a servant, nor the mocking steps of nobility, but the metal steps of a knight.

“Becket… messenger Becket!” I hear as I turn on my heel, to confront the interloper stepping on my inner dialogue.
“Knight captain Mitchell, of the king’s personal guard. Why are you delivering notes from court? Not that I mind the opportunity to… chat with such a striking young woman such as yourself.”

Knight Captain Carron Mitchell, was the first woman to be knighted into the king’s royal guard, and also the first female knight captain of the aforementioned kings guard. Either accomplishment would be more than notable, but put both together and you have an individual more than merely exceptional. and seeing how she wears heavy chainmail & plate, it should silence complaints about women in the military. She isn’t as tall and stocky as you may expect, more slender and agile than you might think, though if you misjudge her form for one that lacks muscle, you’d be sorely mistaken, and I mean sorely. She stands about 5’ 8” tall, stunning green eyes, shimmering like emeralds in the dancing candlelight, fierce red hair, tied into a simple yet elegant ponytail, tied in that fashion only because it’s practical to her. Her facial features are soft and slightly narrow, almost elfish in nature. And the faded scar running under her right ear, & along her jaw line, down to her chin somehow completes her appearance. Those who see fiery red hair, also seem to assume she is fiery by nature. She was always calm, calculating, & methodical… I would go so far as to call her cunning, if that didn’t grant an era of underhanded nefariousness.

“Becket… stop daydreaming” my mental dialogue once again interrupted, this time by cold metal fingertips tapping my cheek. “sorry” I replied quickly, “it’s been a hard week’s travel, over open country no less, I’m just tired”

“that’s fitting” she said, “as I was saying… the result of your dispatch, King Christophe has called in his advisors, if there’s to be a reply, it likely won’t be till ‘morrow morning, at the earliest.” I interject “so, you’ve arranged for quarters in the barracks, and the rest of my gear is already waiting… can I have my sword back now? I feel kind of naked without it. I’ve been a royal messenger for this king’s court for what… 10 years now? And they still don’t trust me enough to leave me armed?”

“you’re lucky, nobody’s taken the throwing daggers you keep clipped to the back of your belt, covered so neatly with that cloak of yours, I’d say you’re deadlier to the king with those, as opposed to that Elven Blade you’re so fond of. How’d you wind up with a title like royal messenger to the king’s court?”

“it sounds so much better than: hi, I’m one of King Christophe Halladin’s personal spies, doesn’t it?” I exclaimed. “and why do you keep addressing me as messenger Becket? It’s been what 20 years now?”

“because, it’s the proper procedure, and I’m all about being proper.” She slips her hands down to her belt, her left clutching the grip of her blade, ever so lightly. “and Dane, you should get yourself out of the leather cuirass, and chainmail, and get some sleep, or respectively… ask that maid behind you to do help you strip.” I pull a small silver case out of my satchel, as I snap it open… “Dane, you still smoke those? They make you smell like a church. You’re the last person that should smell like a church” I approach a lit torch, fluttering slightly as a slight breeze basses by, and I stick the rolled cigarette between my lips, as the end of the tube touches the torches corona, and ignites. A take a deep drag, and release a pillowy plume of smoke. “it’s the mer incense I roll into my tobacco, I like the flavor. And why shouldn’t I smell like a church, I mean me specifically? Is it because you’re still a soldier, and I’m just a killer now?”

“For starters.” She says, defensively. “well… night, then” is my final retort.

I find myself walking down a drafty cold hallway about 30 or so yards from my assigned quarters, the floors are covered with thick red rugs, the walls lined sporadically with torches & tapestries, it’s reminiscent of a lightshow, and it’s just for me apparently. I eventually find myself wondering how often the tapestries catch fire. My musings are abruptly cut short. Muffled sounds in the distance catch my attention, followed by several unmistakable sounds, the song of steel piercing flesh, and a few muffled whimpers, nearly silenced in a stiff breeze.

---edit
added a few more very rough lines.

And I saw hail last summer  :D  :D

We've been getting hailstorms here too. Doozie of a one earlier this month. Hailstones the size of my fist. Was fun, being so hot and having ice fall out of the sky. Not so nice for the feller across the road, who was hit in the head by one when he was moving the car. Concussion only. Lucky.

All we needed was falling flames and I would've started with our zombie evacuation plan.

Also, may I suggest, since we have a few writing stories, that there's a new thread for them, if the mods for this group are amenable? Might help stop the posts getting lost in the chatter. :)

(Invisible man, Looks like a fun story! My suggestion at this point is to watch for repeating words. You switch from past to present tense (and back again) a few times. Something to be worked on in edit. Get the story out first. :) )

thanx for the tips, like i said it's rough, at this point I'm just spewing out on "paper" whatever comes out of my head, and it's late, 4:45am by my clock.

---edit
and some of the repetition is intentional (sort of a joke I play on myself), the rest is sort of a placeholder, till I figure out what to replace them with.

---edit again
I'm really going to bed now, figured I'd stop by one last time this morning, before I hit they hay.

Aussie summer heat + Tropical humidity + Hailstorms + Cyclones + Crocodiles + Snakes = Queensland

Hey, at least we have our Funnel Webs down here :P

In the mood for some strategy to switch my mind off for a few hours before bed, might go for an Endless Legends run. Or Pandora. Anyone tried Civilisation Beyond Earth? I had a bad feeling about it from what I saw and I'm glad I didn't buy it as a SMAC fan, but that's just me. Keep hearing that it's more akin to a total conversion mod of Civ 5 than "spiritual successor to Alpha Centauri".

On this cold, blustery Sunday morning, I think I came to an epiphany:

Make a fully-voiced expansion for Origins. We can use our already collaborated story as a part of expansion. The toolset is available. Instead of depending on characters like Morrigan, we can introduce other characters that WE ARE PASSIONATE about. I know MatrixGirl is down with it. We would need to find at least five or six people familiar with the toolset to create the environments (I am thinking two large areas and about nine small ones). We would have another two or three adding all the decorations and ambience to the areas. Music, already have it under Bioware. Personally, I can see recycling a few songs from any of their titles. And the storyline and questing could be done by about three or four of us. Voice acting would be done by everyone. That's a hard talent to master, but no one here is incapable of doing nothing less than awesome.

So... please drop me a personal message and I will send you my email.

I haven't used the toolset in YEARS, and it's not like Bethesda's CK. Can be difficult to use to make very small changes. I needed active dev help back in the day. The rare mods are the environments, it's alot of work and I'm not so sure if the modders who can do it are active. There are several modders' resources that were released for use however.

just a note, for those who haven't seen it yet, I've started a new thread dedicated to managing our various stories (thank Bethgael for having the idea, & posting it), so if you'd like, you can copy them there from here, and post new stuff too.

I'm really, really going to bed now.

I wonder how similar it is to NWN + NWN 2 Toolsets. I made a few modules back in the day.  I'll go have a look at it when I'm more awake.   Got awoken by the kids(CATS) wanting their morning meals.

NWN was very easy to use, I was a teenager at that time even. My mates and I made huge castles and pitting armies against each other, as big as our computers could handle lol

Hmmm I have 3 copies of it, lost 2 of them. Might have to go to GOG and get again. Wait, I already bought it again few years ago when I was on contract - played with a laptop. Just need to redownload.
