Hello. I'm interested in becoming a part of the Industry and I was hoping on recieving some insight of where I should go for schooling and how I should prepare myself for a career in the gaming industry.
I'm 21 years old and I'm currently deployed to Iraq, but I am interested in becoming a game designer or a game animator. I have limited experience with the creation of a game, I have dabbled with various level editors, but thats about the extent of my experience. I have played many games on many different consoles and a few games on PC and I am always wondering how everything works together. I own and have owned many Bioware games. Of all the developers out there, I would love to be a part of the Bioware team.
If I could get any feedback, that would be appreciated.
Thank you.

The Industry is highly competitive especially on the level where your building mass games as that is where everyone wants to be! As a result you need more then just skills and education but need experience!
Firstly you need a specific speciality. Is it design or engineering you want to focus on or something else entirely? Animation perhaps?
Secondly most of the top flight firms want Degrees as standard. With specialisation in to programs the job employs and the company focuses on. As there tends to be competitive programs you need to show your multiskilled. But as standard for big firms you need to show projects you worked on/have a portofolio/have shown a success in the past. Its not something you can jump into.
However I may not be the best person to ask as I am not in Industry. In fact I work in a Bank. However for me to advance any further in my profession I need to apply most of the above to get higher in the company. Its not something you can achieve overnight because you have a hobby. Sorry to be frank, but it years of experience and development in game industry and a lot of hard work.

Since you responded first, Captain Crash, I'll join you guys here.
First of all, Brian, you should read and understand the advice columns on Sloperama. that should give you a good head start. There's also GameDev, the International Game Developers Association, and a host of valuable and informative links through Google. These will give you some answers to frequently asked questions, answers to questions you haven't asked yet, and a lot of information.
Check some of it out, and then come back. i'd be happy to answer questions, just like Captain Crash is.

Stanley, would you be able to provide information on what Bioware would want to see in a VFX reel, content-wise? in-game effects, to be precise. thanks.

Nope, I wouldn't. I would assume they'd want to see your best VFX work. Just as for a writing submission, they'd want to see samples of your best writing work, and for an art submission, they'd want to see your best artwork.
That just seems logical to me, but I'm not familiar with the art department. Do artists work differently than other departments? Do many artists' employers spell out precisely what they want to see in their job postings?

My brother works at Bioware, he loves the job but hates Edmonton. Its funny when he complains about -40C and its like +9 here.
