So basically, if you can craft it and add crafted arms and legs to it (i.e. the best armors in the game) then it basically all looks the same, depending on if you are mage rogue or warrior. This is honestly a bit B.S. A design focused on crafting and customization but where everything you would want to produce looks the same. Blech. And don't talk about minor differences in arms and legs looks...I want like Evon the Great's mail versus Wade's versus Templar Armor versus Dragon Armor versus Legion of the Dead armor (though that model wasn't always called that) in Origins. And no bloody class/race restrictions. Stat restrictions from origins were way better.

Also, stats on gear in Origins was a lot less important, unless you built around certain things like the auto-crit archer, or the arcane warrior...

...this could lead into a systems critique, so I'll end it before that happens.

Suffice to say, more aesthetic variety please!

I agree on most counts except the race restriction part. Tbh it makes more sense with race restrictions. Templar armor is crafter primarily, though not technically exclusively, for humans, Dalish gear is designed for elves, Legion of the Dead very exclusively for dwarves.... it makes more sense for these templates to be limited.

It is annoying. One of the reasons I ended up building Warden armour for as many of my squaddies that could wear it was because it looked visually distinctive from other stuff I saw - that, and it avoided the weird 'cow jacket' thing most of the mage robes worked out as.

I actually think the 3 styles (armor, coat, mail) for each class can be pretty damned distinctive, the bigger issue for me is that the style which I think looks the best on medium armor (mail) is ONLY available via random chest drop. I would LOVE to give up the extra utility slots on my hideous prowler armor and get prowler mail instead but I'm not about to waste hours save scumming in order to get it. I think prowler armor is ****** horrendous and the prowler coat isn't much better.

[edit here]

Scratch that last bit actually. Just realized prowler mail/armor look identical only prowler coat is different. And you wanna know what the dumbest thing about it is? ALL 3 ARMORS LOOK DIFFERENT ON YOUR COMPANIONS. Why, on earth, would our companions have more customization options than our PCs? Who thought that was a good idea? With the t2 armor the 3 of them look pretty different with that hideous cod piece getting covered up with the mail. Then I checked out battlemaster armor on my warrior and all 3 of them look exactly the same. There's so much about this game that doesn't make any sense.

Agreed.  This was a completely insane design choice.  The worst part is that when crafting warrior armor for my mage using the materials that remove class restrictions, it still just ends up looking exactly like a set of mage armor.  That's freaking retarded!

At a guess, I'd assume the idea came from the same place that produced such genius ideas as recycled dungeons and the 8 slot limit. I don't know whether it's groupthink, lack of oversight or just one random nut who's allowed to run amok through the design process, but one of bioware's most consistent weaknesses is a habit of letting inexplicable design decisions slide. The type of stuff that blizzard, valve or naughty dog would remove a few weeks into the design process manages to stick around in bioware games, for some reason.

On the plus side, a consistent strength of bioware is for every piece of **** in the game, there's a gem too, and here, that gem is the Grey Warden armours. Sure, they're only tier 2, but they come with hidden +9000 awesomeness stat. Join Us. :)

Yeah the armors like grey warden, templar, legion of the dead, dalish, etc etc look good for the most part. Battlemaster mail with battlemaster mail legs and arms looks decent. Sadly companions just tend to have better and more unique armor models than you.

anyway.. don't you think that the armor design in DAI is really impressive for all characters except for the main one (the one that should matter more) for which you can choose between a really poor variety of styles (all quite questionable)?!?!?!

The armor design in general is impressive. Agreed.

But the variation is still pretty thin. Also agreed.

Defense: If you want the game world to be harmonic you need to stick to a red line. Creating to fantastic armors makes it all untrustworthy. You loose the solid integrity towards the timeline chosen.

I guess the problem for me is that the most available armor is the silliest looking one imo. Medium armors are just coat armors that have an inexplicable fabric wrapped OVER the coat. It looks ridiculous. Are my ribs broken? Why aren't the wraps under the coat? Why is there still a coat at all if you wanted to distinguish it from coat armors? I just think it looks stupid as hell but its easy to acquire and it has the most utility slots.

Yeah. I don't really understand bioware's thinking behind this, but I suspect it has to do with a lot of the most impressive armours being old models, which I'd assume the devs felt were fine recycling on NPCs but wanted brand new stuff for the Inquisitor.

Unfortunately the new stuff varies from bland to terrible, and the fixed models make it hard to vary your look, so we end up in a stupid situation of the main character looking worse than everyone else.

That's why I was rather relieved when I started coming across the Grey Warden stuff - they're older models but are exempt from all this stupid 'style' stuff, meaning it is still possible to have a badass-looking main character :)

Have stopped further playthroughs until some nicer looking armors will be released . I know it's a bit exaggerated, but epic armor is a motivation for me ...

Have the armors in multiplayer made availlable in single player. That on itself would be a blessing.

Well another update, it appears I've been lied to and the very few pictures I was able to find of prowler mail were NOT actually prowler mail. It was just people posting prowler armor and calling it prowler mail. I now am the proud owner of some prowler mail and it DOES in fact cover up the cod piece looking pants, and doesn't have the ridiculous lets wrap fabric over coat armor look to it. Screw the extra utility I will rock the prowler mail.

LOL.  I have no interest in the bolted-on blatant cash grab that is MP.  Never looked at it, didn't know it had different stuff.

Why am I not surprised that it has more gear variety than the "epic single player made for PC gamers by PC gamers" campaign....

Sino, I have a mod for you, which I am using and works well.  If you're tired of the "light pinkish tan rawhide" you're stuck with, which doesn't change with leather color, there is something that can either make it dark leather with light stitching, or with dark stitching, or screw it let's just make it black leather.  Might be of interest to you:

As a Dwarf i've found very little variation in Armors, its kinda like after humans they gave up making Armor..
