There's nothing official yet, fingers crossed it's part of Patch 3, release date unconfirmed.

What worked for me was:

  • Uninstall the game
  • Download and apply Patch 2
  • Re-install the game
  • Do not back away from the War Table - always go to a map
  • Do not Fast Travel from Quest Map - use Exits to traverse between locations
  • Limit use of mounts
  • Occasionally rest at Camps

It's strange, i never really encountered this. Banter occurs every ~15mins for me. I actually had Solas and Varric repeat the same stuff 3 times on my Warrior playthrough because I played with them a lot.

I never use mounts (they suck, plain and simple). I fast travel somewhat regularly. I don't rest too often. I never use zone exits.

The travel through the wartable is the fix I've seen the most spread around, but it just happens randomly to me and the wartable doesn't help with anything.

I'm lucky if I ever get any banter. I could spend a solid hour in one map and never even hear one. I'm on my 4th playthrough, I'm about 16 hours in and I've only heard four.

I dunno if this makes a difference, but I find banter happens less often in the Hinterlands. When I'm roaming about the Emerald Graves or Emprise du Lion with Cass, Sera and Varric, they cycle through tons of dialogue.

Not a fix bit traveling through the war table and not the world map has helped me. I've had way more banter doing that on my 3rd playthrough than my first 2 combined. There can still be stretches of silence but I don't encounter them as often.

My first playthrough Dorian and Varric were on the same banter loop betting on the odds of my inquisitor's success even after I finished the story.

The sound is bugged. You can tell it's not working if you get screwy music. Val Royeaux shouldn't have music. You shouldn't be hearing drums anywhere. Restarting the game if you ever hear bugged banter might work.

Well, yeah there are sound bugs (drums should be in War Room only, if you hear it in the rest of Skyhold - usually by leaving directly from the War Table - that's a bug).

But for banter specifically? They've used the save files people sent them and determined that NOTHING WAS WRONG with them. It was pinned to the top of the complete Dragon Age forum by an admin for weeks, I suppose you must have missed it.

As for the saves, it was concluded that they were the unlucky few - banter trigger times have an element of 'random' to them - a timer, and they were unlucky enough for them to be triggering later rather than sooner. They've said, however, that they are looking at reducing the average time overall, or putting a 'cap' on how long you wait.

I noticed once I started mousing over my quests in the journal, so the white diamond thing goes away beside them that banter happens more often, I dunno if it just a placebo or what.

^ They wanted music to be something that occurred only occassionally. It is likely on its own random timer as well.

Unfortunately, I don't think they balanced it well. I end up listening to my own music through my computer, and then I get annoyed when it DOES trigger because then the music clashes. But if I turn music OFF the cutscenes end up really weird because the music is supposed to help set the scene....

...ended up 'finishing' Solas romance to a song I refer to as 'Space Whales' because I was listening to it with soundtrack off when that cutscene triggers. Didn't end up regretting it though, the song is calm, otherworldly, and a little solemn - so it worked out really nicely.

I didn't have a problem with this in my first playthrough, but I'm having an issue in my second playthrough.  I'm doing everything the same as I did in my first playthrough,  no mounts, fast travel quite a bit, rarely travel from the war map and never use location exits.  I also hope this is patched fairly soon as with all games where wandering on foot is a bit part of them, diversion in the form of party banter is seriously welcomed.  Especially in the Hissing Wastes where there are precious few enemies to begin with.

I timed my banter once. I get banter every 5 to 20 minutes, depending on zone and combat. Sometimes people start in the middle of combat. But this is better than anythiing I had in my PC version, where I went without banter for hours.

No ambient music no banter and people voted this as GOTY. Sad times for gaming.

Oh, here, I found the Bioware post on the banter bug I mentioned earlier: [linkylink]

So, as I said. They aren't actually bugs. They're design choices that... didn't quite work out.

No. It IS bugged for a lot of people. You might want to read one or two of the 1000 comments that follow that post.

I did. I also, however, read the first paragraph. They USED those people's saves, they investigated the problem with those saves, tried to figure the source.

If the bug still exists (and if it does, it is evidently an installation problem, not a save one), they will not be fixing it as they cannot reproduce it.

...whoa hey now, this CAUSES audio bugs. You end up hearing the drum music everywhere in Skyhold, but it is supposed to be War Room only.

Lack of banter really ruined my experience with this game. It sucks because the rest of the game is so good. At this point I prefer DA2. Atleast it didn't have the banter bug.

I hope this does get addressed. I know some people claim there is no bug, but I can go literally hours without hearing anyone speak. Then I get someone banter, and then not 2 minutes later or sometimes directly after the other banter ends, another chat begins. So there is definitely something wrong.

The only fix I see in the (current) patch notes for Patch 3 is:

"Changed party banter system to be less random to prevent extra-long periods where no conversations would occur."

Which may fix it if the randomization was causing major problems. Other than that, I don't see anything, but Patch 3 is also a bit lighter than expected due to the holidays.

There is supposed to be a fix in patch 3 (coming soon) that will make it less random so we won't have long periods of silence. Let's hope that's all that is needed to fix it.

Sweet Jesus finally! Atleast that's something. Its pretty depressing that the game's been about for more than 2 months and I've still only heard a super tiny fraction of the banter.
