The Glorious Three Kingdoms series (2010). Maybe the best Asian Historical series (alongside one or two Korean and Japanese series).

Focused on Politics, Strategy and Wisdom nothing can be this interesting. You should all watch.

Feel free to discuss about Characters but anything essential should be put in SPOILER tags.

Super Interesting characters like: Liu Bei, Cao Cao, Chen Gong, Guan Yu, Yuan Shao's and Cao Cao's advisers etc.

I've already watched 24 episodes and I'm in great joy for watching this series. I'll post some cool quote-y screenshots later.

This game ate up SO much of my time back in the day. The Custom characters were great.

Oh no. This is a Strategy game set in the same universe. Think of it like Crusader Kings 2.

This thread has my seal of approval!

San Guo as it is most commonly known, is based on the classic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. While it is not strictly historical accurate on several aspects-- from certain events taking place differently and certain fights being between different characters and so forth--it is without a doubt a spectacular show that captures the essence of the time period astutely. Political intrigue and military strategy are heavily focused in the show, and it features some great, distinguishable characters that you will both love and hate, and some even that you'll love to hate.

If you think Game of Thrones is good in capturing human drama, politics and warfare (though superficial), then you will most likely love this show since it is even better on almost every aspects. You can stream in on YouTube without a problem.

One could easily watch the show simply b/c of Cao Cao.

Ah, yes I particularly love that scene.

In that scene, Cao Cao is getting very emotional, which is interesting since he usually has a lot of self-control. Even when his plans fails or certain events are making a turn for the worse, he usually regains his composure quickly. But he can’t get Chen Gong to reconsider his decision, no matter what he does. He’s helpless there and in the end, he has to mourn the loss of someone he cared about, but who evidently had a low opinion of him. He’s willing to see past the fact that Chen Gong hates him and let him live and he really does want Gong’s approval too, but in the end, he can’t have that. Cao Cao is used to just picking everything up again after he lost and to keep going, but for Chen Gong, he has to beg and even that doesn’t work. He clearly cares about Chen Gong a lot, but no matter what he does, he can’t get him to stay. (Although Gong calls him Mengde in the end, so he at least gets some acknowledgement and reconciliation there).

See, Cao Cao is almost devoid from moral principles, since he views them as a hinder for him to be able to fulfill his ambitions. However, he isn't inherently evil. There’s people he cares about (like Chen Gong here) and he doesn’t do bad things without a reason. Throughout the show Cao Cao commits a lot of morally questionable acts, but he displays a lot of qualities that defines him as a great leader who aims to set an example, to bond with his soldiers and gladly welcomes surrendering enemies into his ranks. Personally I prefer such an individual over a character who goes on about philosophical rants about their great ideals and tries to hide the fact they’re only human too and therefore cannot avoid making bad decisions sometimes. Cao Cao’s ability to accept and openly acknowledge his mistakes is a great thing, and he doesn’t let his pride get in the way of things. This is what makes him such a well written character.

So yeah, Cao Cao is f*cking brilliant. And so is Cao Cheng and Xu Chu as well. I can't wait till you meet Sima Yi, Kaiserian. I'm sure you'll love him.

Cao Cao also has great admiration for Guan Yu and his sense of loyalty (specially how he treat Guan Yu in episode 25). Cao Cao has some great policies and strategies and also decisiveness unlike Yuan Shao who changes his decision after each advice.

I guess Sima Yi is a southerner related to Sun family.

Liu Bei isn't a simple character either. He has great insight and master level decision making.

lol @ Zhang Fei usurping a town and mismanaging it!

lol @ Yuan Shao. He is that kind of leader who surrounds himself with more intellectual individuals than him, yet can't take their advice when it is needed (or ironically when he does it comes back at him in the wrong way).

But yes, the show has its fair share of characters, who have their pros and cons in different areas. Really makes them human in a lot of ways.

That gif is from episode 28. Great battle is happening in episode 28-29. It's so pleasant to watch!

Then Xun You goes full retard in episode 30. I'm disappointed. Never go full retard.

Liu Biao doesn't seem very capable. Only Cao Cao faction, Liu Bei faction and Southerners are the interesting ones.

Yeah, the show has its fair share of incompetent players "pre Three Kingdoms time". It is after Ep 33 if I recall correctly that that the show gets really interesting when the nation is divided into Shu, Wei and Wu.

Interesting. As I haven't read or remember these Three Kingdoms each belongs to who, my excitement to watch the next 5 episodes is raised! Obviously these three names aren't based on top 3 powerful families at the time and should be geographical.

Some good characters wasted for different reasons so far. What a pity.

A little over half of the show follows the foundation of the Three Kingdoms period, which officially starts year 220, which is latter on within the show (I believe you are at year 213 if my memory serves me correctly, though don't hold me to that).

The names are Cao Wei (to distinguish from other Wei states in Chinese history) and was named after the area that Cao Cao inhabited during his power, Shu Han for Liu Bei (Shu for location, Han b/c Liu Bei was related to the Han dynasty) and Sun Wu (the family in power there was Sun, and Wu comes from the name of the location).

The show gradually gets better and better as it goes along, but the first few episodes are one of my favorites in the show due to it focusing on Cao Cao's rise to power.
