In other games I've played, smashing boxes was fun, because sometimes you'd find things hidden inside them. So far, in this game I've not found any boxes that are smashed that contain anything at all. Maybe an occasional health potion, or some highever weave, or maybe even a rare rune? Treasure chests aren't the only places that contain items. It also just feels good to smash stuff sometimes. It would be nice to have the occasional reward from a box drop.
Edit 1--------I've also found you can break open red lyrium veins that aren't necessarily marked for breakage. I wonder if doing this causes any side effects? I haven't noticed any yet. 
Edit 2--------Boxes can be shattered. Cobwebs, however, are indestructible.
