Check out their nba games, madden as well. It is mind boggling that a sports game offers us more complexity to have proper characters than rpgs. Before sport games were simple and rpgs complex and now that trend has reversed. This also proves that their lame excuse that people do not like complexity is wrong.
I do not know what sports games you were playing. I was playing Front Page Sports Baseball and Football along with Strat-o-Matic PC versions of Baseball, football. basketball and ice hockey back in 1990's. All those games had a statistics engine, career play and roster management along with drafts. Sports simulations have never been simple. So the trend is not reversed.

Actually I never said that no one played Planescape. What I said as a setting for a video game very few gamers knew about it compared to other settings like GreyHawk, Forgotten Realms even Spelljammer.
The only way they could have gone more obscure would have been to do a Dark Sun game.

I remember there were two games by Strategic Simulations Inc (Wake of the Ravager and Shattered Lands) and a Dark Sun MMORPG (Crimson Sands) by Total Entertainment Network. The two by SSI helped SSI on the road to bankruptcy. The MMORPG did TEN no favors either.

And that's sad Planescape is very cool setting.
To me it seems like a no brainer, but I would think an interesting divergent path would be a Ravenloft setting. Who didn't start their DnD path with a good ole fashioned I, Straad module. I don't think I've ever seen a video game with the Ravenloft setting.

I didn't. Really, roleplaying Goth is a cliché. And there's a certain...overwrought...quality to roleplaying with the people that like that genre.![]()

Pffft, nothing beats D&D to say otherwise is heresy. Of course I'm excluding 4th edition because well, it's rubbish and they should feel bad for releasing it.While I agree with most of what you say, this opening is going to lose you a lot of allies.
D&D is far from the ultimate RPG environment. It's just been the most successful, historically. There are other, better systems.
But I agree the way DAI handles inventory is absurd, and the mechanics would be vasvastly improved by being compatible with tabletop play (thus being symmetrical, and allow for diverse builds, and be exhaustively documented).
This game needs documentation.

So Ravenloft is Cliche as compared to Forgotten Realms for instance? Overwrought with what? Complete sentences would help.
I'm not a goth person nor is it my preferred setting, but its fun to have a bit of variety once in while.
To come back full circle, SSI games are big reason I fell in love with Bioware in the first place. The BG2 and NWN games were the first games I played where I felt like someone actually made a DnD videogame worth playing. SSI , Those were crap and teased you into thinking someday its possible.

The Forgotten Realms is way more cliche than Ravenloft. I still like FR way better though.

I adore TFR as well. Sadly, my DM got butt hurt because I was determined to kill off all the big NPCs like ole Drizzt and others. Pro tip, DON'T **** with the DM lol, or you end up single handedly fighting 6 dragons each with a rider( lvl 40 or higher ).The Forgotten Realms is way more cliche than Ravenloft. I still like FR way better though.

I loved that in BG1 you could kill Drizzt and loot his gear and in BG2 you could fight his entire party. ![]()

Yeah, BG 1 is what introduced me to D&D and other true RPGs. I used to consider the Final Fantasy series a RPG( I was 13 years old ).I loved that in BG1 you could kill Drizzt and loot his gear and in BG2 you could fight his entire party.

Oh boy... I never played the games but I collected the AD&D cards back in the 90's. I had no clue how to play them (I was like... 12?) but I thought they were so cool. I remember those names on the cards: Dungeons & Dragons , Forgotten Realms, GreyHawk, Spelljammer.... I still remember what they smelled like right out of the package (weird, right?).
Wow. Memories.

Not sad at all. I did actually end up playing D&D years later in my early 20's. 2nd edition D&D I think. Had lots of fun adventures. Never really got serious in it but I played a few campaigns and had a blast. I just ended up playinig 3rd Edition about a year back and that was pretty fun, too.

How is that sad? Me and the guys still get together for DnD sessions, these days its down to about 3 times a year. That's the sad part.

You guys/gals make me feel old. ![]()
When I first started playing DnD. Knight Rider was on TV, Thriller was the hit album, and the button on my Atari 2600 was wasted from playing Pitfall... So we went to the arcade to play Xmen and Galaga

Indeed, sadly I'm no longer able to play D&D as I now live in the middle of hillbilly hell. Personally, I think they would shoot me if they saw me carrying a D&D book. How is that sad? Well, accusing FR of being cliche isn't very sensible; the whole point of the FR is making every cliche that exists available someplace in the setting, right?

SSI , Those were crap and teased you into thinking someday its possible.
I thought Pool of Radiance was OK, actually.; about as good as any other cROG of that era. Curse of the Axure Bonds blew chunks, though.

No, I was saying being a roleplaying goth is a cliché. Don't get me wrong I like Goths, some of them are my favourite people. But they do have a shall we say...flair for the dramatic. There's nothing wrong with it, it's just not style. And SSI games were awesome, without them I'm not sure RPGs would be a thing.

I remember playing Pool of Radiance, and I remember it being pretty decent. I just don't recall what medium. Was it Table Top? a NWN module? I'm pretty sure it wasn't the SSI version tho? A lot of brain cells ago.

Pool of Radiance was a AD & D module, a Gold box game and finally there was Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor
