Companions unlikely to use abilities

Hi, I'm doing second playthrough (after a 1month brake) with different class and companions, but I have a issue where companions are unlikely to use their abilities, they do mostly auto-attacks. Party comp: me (rogue archer), Solas, Iron bull (2h) and Cassandra (tank with shield).

So for example, Cassandra won't use neither war cry or challenge no matter what - this is the biggest issue. Solas will drop barrier when available, but he uses offensive spells very rarely. Iron bull also mostly auto attacks. I lowered mana reserved, but they sit almost at full stamina/mana and still they mostly auto attack. I have set warcry and challenge to preferred, but she won't use these skills.

Is there any way to force them to spam abilities whenever mana/stamina is available, especially those I set to preferred? Maybe it has something to do with behavior settings, or having enabled some other skills? I want my tank to use taunt to do his job, which is tank freaking damage.

On my first playthrough I didn't have that much of an issues tho (it was before "patch 2"), sure AI was still dumb, but now it is beyond imagination.

And why they removed advanced AI settings which were so amazing in origins!?..?. Now we have to run with morons and broken tactical camera, and two behavior settings (follow and defend) which does absolutely insane things.

Did you change the stamina/mana reserve limits on them?  I've found that, for many costly spells and attacks that take greater than 50 mana/stamina, if the character is set (by default) to keep a reserve of 50%, they will never use those skills.

Yes I did, it changed nothing. It's odd, because on my first playthrough I didn't have this problems (I used blackwall as a tank and he did very well at keeping agro even on default 50% stamina reserved). It feels like something got bugged, but I can't figure out what. I tried various behavior settings (defend self, defend me, follow me, follow self) but it still won't use taunt abilities, I even was keeping agro and my tank would let me be simply beaten to death. Ofc it's my mage who needs protection mostly or Iron bull, I can manage to to position myself or use stealth when needed, but those morons just eat dmg while tank is doing basically nothing unless i manually cast warcry or challenge, but this is annoying to do on every trash pack, because tactical view is so bad.

I see Cassandra deosn't use abilities because he has never any guard, tho she has challenge, war cry and shield wall on preffered abilities. My blackwall never ran out of guard, only when doing dragons.

Just thought, I need to test tomorrow my old save from first playthrough to see if Blackwall still works or got also broken..

It's a known bug has been reported a few times. Happened to me on one of my six concurrent runs. It'll fix itself eventually. Nothing I've ever seen anyone try fixed it for me. It just up and started working again out of no where. Some people have had success with reloading the game and such but it s what it is.

How many abilities have you set as preferred for each character?

EDIT: I'm a moron who can't read! I note you have 3 abilities as preferred, have you tried dropping down to 2?

I had similar problems with a lack of taunting until I set it up so that Cassandra only had war cry and challenge as preferred, and I disabled some such as shield bash that I needed to manually control since the AI never uses it against guard >>

IIRC there was a thread where someone mentioned that by default, the AI will cycle through abilities with a few algorithms thrown in depending on the situation (eg. if all abilities are left as enabled and Cassandra sees an enemy, she'll charging bull into space until she hits Harbinger). I believe they may have been referencing a dev. Or may even have been a dev. Setting multiple abilities to preferred simply makes them cycle through all those abilities, making it less likely they'll use the one you want. If that doesn't help, then it's likely the bug as sinosleep mentioned. :(

So I just did test a save from my first playthrough and Blackwall there works fine, he instantly taunts enemies, uses stuff like bodyguard and so on, but Cassandra from 2nd playthrough still does nothing.

@Gya I tried changing preferred skills, disabling others and it doesn't help, they auto-attack and nothing more (except solas throwing barrier and casting some offensive spell from time to time, but still to rarely considering he sits there on full mana.

I play on normal because tactical view is so annoying to use, yet still I'm forced to use it because my morons do nothing by themselves. Restarting a game doesn't seem to change things either. Well, waiting until it resolves by itself is not quite a solution, because what it will happen near the campaign end. Absolutely frustrating and ridiculous thing going on here.

I know that feel...

I am on my second playtrough and I have NEVER been able to see Sera using thousand cuts no matter what I do (set it as the only preferred ability, lower the mana limit and so on...). If I want her to use it I have to click on her portrait and manually select the ability from the bar. Otherwise she just "forget" to have it..

So basically if you lucky, it works, if unlucky then you can't do anything about. And hell knows what are algorithms for AI, I don't think they throw random ability. So problem lies with those algorithms and you can't change them or modify like you could in Origins. I would call this a game breaking bug, so it should be addressed to ASAP fixes, but it isn't and that makes me angry.

Edit: It suddenly started to work and I did absolutely nothing, it just fixed by itself. Miracle!
