Why do wraiths always mindlessly target my mage?

Seriously, is their AI just programmed to do this?  It doesn't matter what I do.  I can manually control a tank and have them go in first.  The wraiths ignore them and go straight to my mage.  I can taunt them.  The wraiths ignore it and keep hitting my mage.   I've even left my mage standing out of range behind a rock and waited for everybody else to engage before I bring her in.  As soon as she appears the wraiths start attacking her.

I mean I can defeat them, but considering I'm still low level and puny and my barriers are still weak, it's getting super annoying for just this one character to have to chug like 4 health potions every time I fight a rift.  I did not have this problem with either a rogue archer or a 2Hed warrior.

Anyone know what the heck is going on?

*Also, how do you edit thread titles?*

They must have a target-priority of mages.  I thought they prioritized ranged, however, as they tend to pelt my archers and mages equally.

Well, with a rogue if you happened to get targeted you can just drop into stealth and when you reappear they still ignore you.  Not so with the mage.  That and you can usually insta kill them with long shot and leaping shot.

wraiths target you. I don't know why.

When I was playing with my warrior (reaver), they woudl target my pc, whether or not I would charge in first with my other tank or not.

Now I'm playing as a mage, and the exact same thing happens.

I think wraiths just have a pc priority. As a rogue, it's easy, stealth, and usually they'll lose track of you, allowing you to pick them off.

Otherwise, it's annoying. I hate the wraith setups so much as on nightmare, if you're not careful, a bunch of these will wipe your party FAST.

Well, if you disrupt the rift, you'll pretty much one-shot all the wraiths. Of course they consider you a priority target. :D

I find that the passive skills to reduce aggro in this game hardly ever work. It could have something to do with the warriors having very few skils to keep aggro going. It's one of many frustrations for me in this game. I don't even see the point of having a tank if they can't hold aggro.

This is why you just set your priority on killing them first.  That's what I do.

It's almost amusing when bad people are screaming, "kill the warrior"...but they are not targeting the warrior at all. They are usually chasing your rogue or mage.

Or confusing my KE for a warrior, heh. :D

I don't think it's just wraiths, it's the weird way the enemy AI works with threat - it can get totally irrational and will charge through massive damage if it gets fixated on the threat you're generating. The issue is just more pronounced with wraiths because they spawn in big groups.

You can sort of work around it, which is what I've been doing on nightmare to avoid micromanaging barrier and potions. For example, if I'm going for a rift, I'll make sure to send in my tank well ahead of the group (I'll have a rogue working on taking out the squishy targets also). Breaking line of sight with my mage before pulling them also seems to work sometimes.

Now that I'm a rift mage it's a non-issue. I just use a mean sleep combo on the wraiths (Pull of the Abyss -> Immolate -> Chain Lightning -> Stonefist). Actually this works on almost everything and makes nightmare much too easy.

I will second that. I mean, war cry: 4 seconds taunted. Wtf is 4 seconds, really? It's over before they usually even reach the tank to attack!!

Usually taunts increase your threat generation so as long as you deal damage you don't lose agro past the duration of the skill, refresh your taunt when the CD is available to further increase your threat. My Inquisitor is a tank and I have no problem keeping agro except for the Pride Demons that seem to have an agro dump, I always need to taunt them off my companions at some point.

Yep, ranged enemies are by far the most dangerous in the game in general.

mana potion > flashfire wraith #1 > order (and order) tank to area of wraith # 2 > (getting damage now and iding) winter's grasp #2 or winters grasp #3 if #2 is near dead or dead. run and drink as needed

even nightmare I have not used 4 pots, but Orleasian mage armor and gear give small +mana for second cast freeze. otherwise you be crazy to run into like forbidden oasis wraith ring without massive magic build. Use rogue for combo on freezes too, or rogue can crit on flashfire with panic build

oops, they burn, light up the corners with ativan fire. if you are talking about the fire wraith i build for fire def early and prioritize, and often choose those companion secondary skills that clear status effects. look for free casts and cooldown reduction in your skill trees

ok I do a lot of alchemy, but so many posts cry about the game being easy, how is the game going to be hard if you don't take damage? you got to respecify skills, rebuild gear and pick plants. well that's my game, at least it is colorful

(another) edit:

btw you got to do high damage, tier two staff and conductive current are great early, you get energy barrage which combos on your freeze if you can't get cass to bash it. I am no expert, nor studied, just I am playing nightmare

I find it difficult to get into playing a mage anyways. It's much worse when your warriors can't pull aggro off them. I found myself spending most of the time running around screaming for help that never came. Cassandra would be chasing the big nasty things that were chasing me...doing her taunts and everything else, but it did not pull aggro off. At least as a rogue you can stealth to avoid some of the broken aggro problem, though enemies are still sometimes able to stay locked on.

Wraiths seems to target whoever seems to hit them first, in my case its my stealth rogue but if say Solas or Sera attack first they get targeted.

Yeah - I found it to be quite a ropey class to play pre-specialisation and even after I picked up Rift Mage, i didn't think it improved all that much. I only genuinely started enjoying the class when I reloaded and went Knight-Enchanter, as that spec pretty much addresses every issue I had with it.

I'm the opposite. I gave knight-enchanter many honest tries with different builds and, while it's great, it just didn't feel right somehow. I'm not in the "nerf KEs" boat though, and I know they are not just about spamming Spirit Blade. I think rift mage is great though.

I wish I could say the same about necromancer. I really wanted to be a necromancer from the moment I read you could even be one. Sadly, I was very disappointed with the skills. The very first time I used Spirit Mark, the controlled mob bugged out and didn't want to do anything. This happened a few times in a row and I honestly haven't tried Spirit Mark since. I also noticed that the durations (and therefore damage) of Spirit Mark and Walking Bomb are lower than advertised, and that Walking Bomb explodes for 200% instead of 600%. I honestly believe that if the necromancer skills had worked as advertised and Spirit Mark didn't rob you of XP and the controlled monster would attack, it would be a great class. Not as powerful as the other two, but fun.

los them around something almost everytime you engage them there some where you can break line of sight in get them to come to the rest of the party not just the ranged
