The System Alliance have a Navy and Marine Corps, but we never see or hear any mention of an Army

or Air Force branch.

Does the System Alliance have seperate branches like the USA or does the System Alliance  Navy assume the role of an Air Force branch and the Marine Corps of an Army branch?

They don't specify, but they didn't list "Flight Lieutenant" (Joker's rank) as one of the System Alliance ranks.

Before Emily Wong's supposed death, she was assisting the National Guard. I do not know if they are a branch in the Alliance, though.

That is from Mass Effect: Revelation, the first book written for the game series.

The Alliance military doesn't have different services. It basically combined the functions of a Navy (space fleet), Army, Marines, and Air Force into a single branch of service. So Shepard is technically both Alliance Navy and a Marine. In the Alliance Navy 'marine' is more of a ground-based occupational field than a separate branch of service.

Having said that, the various Earth nations still field their own militaries as well. I suppose you could compare them to the ME equivalent of a National Guard. They don't leave the planet and probably weren't involved in the Skyllian Blitz for example, but they are fighting against the Reapers when they invade Earth.

Thanks. So the System Alliance pretty much combined all military service branches into one.

Yeah in the Emily Wong tweets we hear about the National Guard fighting the Reapers and shooting down Reaper fighters with AA. Also in the CDN North America scrambling military jets. I don't know if i would compare the Earth nations militaries with the National Guard given that the USA doesn't know what role or roles the National Guard should assume these days.

No, and I honestly don't know if BW thought out the military roles so well.

In the first game, the alliance is clearly a Starfleet-esque organization (albeit with substantially more militarization). In ME2, it's portrayed more as a political entity, and in ME3, it's a purely military organization.

I know the alliance encompasses all of these factions, but the writing for it is still very inconsistent and similar to how Liara was characterized (i.e. a plot device whose purpose within the story changes at the convenience/expedience of the writers' whim).

IMO, I really wish they portrayed a more... realistic military organization.

I think it's all of the above, and always has been.

As I understand it, the Alliance was formed solely to co-ordinate the exploration, colonization, and development of other worlds by Earth-based jurisdictions. As such, it represents humanity's interests diplomatically, politically, and militarily to other worlds.

The entire Alliance Parliament & Prime Minister were on Arcturus Station when it was destroyed as one of the Reaper's first targets when they invaded Earth.

Just as individual countries have ambassadors, politicians, and military organizations, the whole of humanity has all of that in the Alliance. I guess I don't see the disconnect.

That's what I said. The issue is that the writing for how the alliance is portrayed is very nuanced towards whatever particular game it appeared in, and how the writers wanted it to appear.
