For me Circles are a poor solution to a problem of people.

Keeping people in Circles makes them prisons.  Prisons that may be more or less oppressive, but every circle has:

1.  Tranquility - lobotomizing

2.  Templars - Prison guards

3.  Harrowing - useless and arbitrary test to determine if you will simply be imprisoned or if you will be lobotomized or murdered.

4.  Rite of Annulment which is basically "Oops, we failed to do our job, now we can kill them all instead of one by one"

I would suggest razing them to the ground, training general groups of people in law enforcement to work as Templars, and having those law enforcement folks crack down on abusive mages, the way the Champion did in Kirkwall.

You can't define everyone by their potential, but by their actions.  I'd prefer the good mages were out keeping the peace and the bad mages weren't responsible for having the Rite of Annulment called down on everyone at once.

It's certainly not a perfect solution, but

1) Tranquility is supposed to be the last possible resort to curb an unstable mage short of outright killing them.  From what I recall, it's not even supposed to be used on any mage who has passed their Harrowing unless they specifically request it. (Kirkwall was apparently not supposed to be using it on such tricial matters)  And Justinia was in fact having alternatives to Tranquility looked into.

2) Templars are not just supposed to be guards, but protectors as well.  This of course got skewed in two ways.  The southern Chantry's Templars became jailers, while the Imperial Chantry's Templars became figureheads.  Neither was really fulfilling its purpose

3) Harrowing I agree is a rather brutal and unnecessary test

4) The Rite of Annulment is something that is only supposed to be invoked if it is believed the Circle in question cannot be saved.  Meredith was on rally shaky ground in Kirkwall in invoking it.  Both in the necessity and in whether she had the authority to do so at all.

Circles are outdated and broken. An entirely new shape is needed for Thedas' mages. Like…The Trapezoid of Magi.

The fact of the matter is, the Circles needed to be fixed.

One does not fix the Circle by breaking it.

Our prisons, in fairness, have come a long way to be what they are now, and even then I can't say they're the best they can be. But to expect perfection on the dot is kind of ridiculous. I don't expect the Bright Hand or whatever Cass has going to be perfect. I don't expect perfection from the College of Magi. I don't even trust Vivi to get it all right. People expect results to be handed to them on a silver platter, for it to happen immediately, but everything is a result of trial, error, and results, and that takes time.

I'm kind of disappointed that people saw Kirkwall and went, "well! Time to rebel," and not "Well, ****, let's work together and make that never ****** happen again, oh my god."

If you don't understand the difference between pop culture or actual history then we're done here. Since we have brought up real evidence to prove our points like the Muslim accounts or for an exmaple historical facts. You have only brought your opinion on a subject. Yes I was being a smart ass with that comment I do admit to that.

However, stupid auto correction strikes again with the portray thing that's the one thing, I hate about the new ISO eight software for the I phone.
