Steppen not talking about the dragon but how the system in general works. Try crafting without spending sometime googling it, or having played previous games.

To that - I can now do about 60% damage by just controlling blackwall, but the rest of my team dies. Dorian and Solas are ALWAYS the first to go. The ai is good awfully stupid. How do you keep the mages alive in a fight like this? I try micro managing and it works until my timing is off and they get one shoted.

I am taking all these suggestions to heart but how do you micromanage 4 team members all at once? It almost seems better to just go in with just blackwall and my rouge and fight.

For dragon fights, you want to make heavy use of Hold Position. When you get a mage within the wing radius and outside of kicking range, you want to double-click that position until a shield appears on the ground. They'll stay in that spot until they're forced out of it or until you move them to another location.

Otherwise, mages automatically try to be a little farther away, which is great for most fights but will get them wing-vortexed when fighting a dragon.

Save Fade Step for those moments when the dragon leaps backward and winds up for a breath attack. If the dragon spins in place, set new Hold locations for your mages so they're beside or behind the dragon again.

If Blackwall is doing his job, the dragon should mostly be trying to swipe at him, rather than moving all over the map. If you see that the dragon has lost the Taunted condition (shows up in the tooltip in tac cam), make sure Blackwall reapplies it. When the dragon has more threat from the back or sides, she starts moving around more - which means more microing your party's position.

(sidenote: the previous games didn't have crafting, so we're all learning this as we go :) )

What is Hold Position? I've never seen that option before? Is that in the behavior?

It's the H key on PC, not sure on consoles, one of the 4 "commands" you can issue in combat or tactical: hold, attack my target, cancel combat (sheath), and cancel commands. AFAIK hold position only works on a per unit basis unless you are in tactical mode and then it applies to the whole party, usually, unless it decides to not be responsive, which it does sometimes.

Yeah, in tac cam the H key makes the whole party hold position, and double-clicking a spot until a shield appears will make one person hold.

As far as I know, hold persists until you give them a command that requires them to move (or if they get knocked out of position, obviously). For example, if you tell Blackwall to hold position, then tell him "attack that guy 10 feet away", he'll move to do that. But since ranged characters don't have to move to attack, hold keeps them where you want them for longer.

Hope this helps cut down on some of the microing. :)

1) Don't control Blackwall. The AI does a great job at tanking, and usually a crappy job at DPS, so let it handle the former while you focus on the latter.

2) If you have To The Death on Blackwall, and you're following 1), turn it off. It's great if you're controlling him, and people can solo dragons with it, but it'll usually mean the rest of your party dies. If you can't kill the dragon by yourself, then don't use it.

3) You should get the best weapons you can, not just the best armour. In this game, damage is calculated as (raw dmg - armour) * multiplier. What this means is that a small difference in raw damage (what you see in the weapon's stats) can translate into a huge difference in actual damage inflicted, especially against monsters with high armour.

I'm using DB, why would I get pincushion? How would that effect my dps?

Pincushion works on all attacks, not just ranged.

A lot of solutions here but there is another way, understand that dragons kill because they have separation anxiety. They don't like you to be too far away and thus they wing flap you and breath on you to get you to come closer. That is how most parties die fighting dragons is from range. The safest dragon killing party is Cass, Blackwell, Bull and you. Why? They will all get up close and under the dragon. There it is reduced to kicking and swatting at you which you can mitigate pretty easily. It is slower than all your fancy mark of death, flask of fire, lightening cage things but if you are trying at lower levels it might actually be safer.

If you want to bring a mix, one huge key is this, when wing flap starts your natural tendency is to run away from the dragon. Don't, run towards him, mince you get into the eye of the storm you are safe.

Thanks Sidney!

I've really been struggling with the combat in this game, Actually playing on Casual and still not doing well

Using your advice to run towards a flapping dragon, I've just killed the first roof top dragon in Emprise du lion. Even though it's on casual I feel epic.

Thinking of trying the second one on Normal....  ;)

Thanks again.
