It protects the group from flanks, makes aoe more effective (both yours and the enemy however, as noted by many people) and creates a chokepoint.

You are referring to staying in the main door while someone goes out and puts the flag up correct? If that is the case, it is a very effective way to choke point the enemy. It's common real life tactic as well.

That doorway is a huge queu of baddies about to be longshot'd and explosive shotted into oblivion from my lion statue perch (I laugh at you DC!)... 10 killstreaks are common affair. If the team plays it right, and the map is optimal it's just cake all day.
Running around the courtyard in the open and getting hit fom every diection is not choice. Sometimesm, depending on layout, you need to rollout and avoid the Red guy... who can again be caught in the door and #$*^@. Not tomention everyone clustered makes for easy mage barriering (when they remeber to do it!)
