With a name Like iron bull, you'd swear the guy would be tough to kill. But no, iron bull is always the first part y member to go down in nearly any situation.

I've tried to up his constitution, but its still not enough. Why aren't his specs more like Cassandra? She is the definition of what a tank should be. The girl can go toe to toe with dragons, take a hit, and keep on hitting!

Iron bull just isn't cutting it for me, any suggestions?

I feel your pain.

He's always the first to die in my party. Admittedly, I only bring him along for funny banter.

It's quite ironic though, how big and strong he looks yet my skinny, cute elf girlfriend Sera can outdo him every time.

His specialize is Reaver which needed to babysit a lot.

Try control him in combat instead, got him a generate guard skill, on-hit gain guard or heal on kill help too.

Bull is not exactly tanker, he more like a damage dealer. Try pair him with Blackwall to give him some space.

Set the Devour tactic to preferred and give him +% to Healing or Heal on Kill equipment. Also take Battlemaster and go straight for War Horn.

Not really sure how his specialization would fit in with this but I started my nightmare PT and spec'd him into SnS. It makes a huge difference. He's almost just as good as Cassandra or Blackwall now.

I never had an issue with him dying too much on other difficulties. He definitely went down more than Cass and BW but it wasn't enough for me to want to stop bringing him (kept him 2H then). He's probably on of my favorite companions and his banters are usually great.

Also- I've found the spec most helpful with IB is flat bonuses to health plus guard on hit or heal on kill.

+% to heal doesn't work with Devour.

My advice is to prioritise abilities that give guard, which I do on all warriors.

Then there's all this equipment with the "berserk" quality increasing damage taken, which does not help. >_>

Thank the Creators I was about to sip when I read this.

Two seconds later, that would've been a spit take.

It's funny. Before the game was out, I was convinced he was going to be the best tank in the game.

How wrong...

I know, right. We all thought Blackwall would be a two-hander Grey Warden, but instead, he's THE WALL.

He feels exactly like Sten or Fenris where the 2HW are all super glass cannons. I wound up building him up with a lot of S&S skills to gain guard - hate the charge power because he winds up far away and usually dead after using it, it is like watching a moron use biotic charge in ME.

I tried Iron Bull as companion on Hard mode. He always died quickly... So I gave him Ring of Pain, Devour and Charging Bull as preferred skills, disabled Challenge and War Cry and set him to defend the tank (my character). Built up a few Vanguard passive, too.

He became much less squishy and he kept the enemy on the floor quite often.

Personally I find Cass to be the best option.

I also find two-handed to be really unnecessary in this game.. if I'm playing as a mage I'll just use Cass and Blackwall with Sera as my rogue. My preferred class is warrior/sword and shield, as two-handed is horrid to play.

I use Iron Bull as a reaver tank in my nightmare playthrough, as nothing stops you from giving him a sword+shield combo. He could pretty much solo everything at this point. The upside to reaver, is you get his HP down low and then stack some guard, which he never stops stacking, and then he proceeds to rip the enemy dragon in half because his damage is boosted so high. I never roll with any other tank.

You can make a 2h warrior reaver tanky as well, you just have to put actual effort into crafting him some gear and watching his tactics. AI does not control 2h warriors or dual wield rogues very well.

Fade-touched obsidian is your friend. Use it.

Well his original name was The Porcelain Cow but they didn't get a lot of merc business under that name.

This is what I do, and I disable the Reaver abilities that eat his health. I find he works best with my rogue archer, probably because she's got high DPS and can take out dangerous targets like mages quickly, so he can clean up the mobs.

Because the AI can't control 2 handed damage dealers well at all. My brother rolled with a 2 handed Qunari Reaver as his Quizzy and had no problems in hard mode.

If you want to play bull, you have to play him personally. He's not a fire and forget companion.

On one of my playthroughs I managed to make some armor for him that got his Melee defense up to like, 74%. He got fairly durable then lol.

I rarely use the tac-cam so I have no time for companions that need babysitting.  The first thing I do when I recruit IB is give him a longsword and a shield.  2H warriors are for inquisitors or tac-cam players, unless you can keep them alive long enough to get guard on hit and add some S&S passives.

Oh god I remember I tried to use Cole as dual daggers without controlling him. I respecced him so fast.

The AI is so bad at dual dagger. I swear it wasn't this bad in earlier games. I don't know what happened. (Plus enemy shadows are ****** fine. Why don't our allies have that AI?!?)

Yeah, Cole gets a bow every time.  To be fair though, the enemy assassins have about ten times the amount of health and don't have to contend with swiping bears that hit you even you're standing behind them.

It's kinda stupid, enemy rogues have a version of Flank Attack with zero cooldown and like, no stamina cost, so that they can perpetually flank you and feel threatening. But it would be ridiculously OP to give the player character that ability, so it makes sense to not give it to PC's.  What they maybe should have done is given all rogue character's that ability when ONLY being controlled by the AI, but not when controlled by the PC, IE, make that ability present in the tactics as preferred, but hidden from the player and only applicable to AI control.

The AI has problem because theres too much AoE. Shield and sword can handle it but the AI doesn't duck and weave in like a player will.
