Not letting me quote OR cut and paste at the moment (ah, the joys of Internet Explorer, the only browser DESIGNED just for Windows!!), so,
Dear lynroy,
Well, darn me to heck. I usually have a good ear for these things. I could have sworn that's who it was.

I wonder if it was a deliberate attempt to make the inquistors sound more nondescript. I know a fair few people complained that Hawke's voice acting made it more difficult to put their own stamp on the character.
I started an Adaar inquistor and went with the American female voice. After reaching level ten I couldn't take the bland delivery anymore, deleted the character and started again with Alix. Even her delivery isn't anywhere near the range you get with femHawke.
I did the exact same thing with my Adaar. It got to the point where I just kept skipping the scenes where my inquisitor talked (which I hate doing), and then when Hawke came into the picture I just became more painfully aware of how lacklustre the american female VA sounded when compared to femme Hawke. I finally just said 'f this' and started over.
I hadn't really thought about the blandness being a deliberate direction for the voice actors (though I know that Sumalee, as well as the others, are better actors than they come across in the game), but I would have to agree with you now that you, and a few others have said it.
The thought honestly just makes me sad because both voice actors for Hawke were so amazing. I get that many people were upset and felt that Hawke wasn't really 'their' character, but I personally feel that wasn't because of how the VA's emoted, but because of how often Hawke was written to answer other characters for you, instead of the game letting you choose your own response.

I haven't done the British female voice, but of the others, I'd rank them:
1.) British male (used with my qunari and dwarf warriors)
2.) American female (used with my dwarf rogue)
3.) American male (used with dwarf rogue and qunari mage)
I liked the British male voice for my qunari warrior because I think it adds to his "otherness". He's too Marcher to be a 'proper' qunari, yet still viewed by Marchers as a qunari. It worked well with him, especially since I played him as a super goody-good knight in shining armor type. I used that voice for my dwarf warrior too, but haven't played through that one very far yet. It fits him because he's kind of like the dwarven Dorian, so that voice fits better.
I liked the American male voice when he was being snarky and shady. It felt too forced and *yawn* when he was being aggressive. Like cliche deep bellowing stuff.

I like the English voice for Dalish and Humans, and the American for Dwarf and Qunari. I tried the American voice for a human once and all I could think was that he was trying too hard to sound tough. "Dude, you're not Batman, stop it."

He fit my human mage perfectly. Not sure how he would fit a Qunari or Dwarf however.

I like the voices. They each have their own charm. The English voices are quite calm, adding a nice balance to the chaos of Thedas. Jon Curry's voice sounds jovial and deep, perfect for sarcasm and brutality, and Sumalee's voice is refreshingly husky and adds a deadpan sense of humor to the sarcasm of the inquisitor, along with a great deal badassery when she's angry. I do wish the accents of the Free Marchers were more along the lines of Sebastian's Scottish accent, but it is what it is.

I'm using him for my sarcastic character, and it's a lot better (also the voice is really nice to listen to *_*) . If you're picking the top and bottom options they always sound plain and boring.

English Inquisitor probably has the best delivery of "End table for orphans!"

Brit-man sounds very inquisitive (HAR HAR HAR) and naive. If you ask a lot of questions, this voice does it the best.
Americ-man sounds very blunt or disinterested, but I think he fits an 'angrier' character better.

Some voice actors be crazy good. There's something to be said when you can always recognize a voice actor vs when they consistently surprise you with a variety of roles.

Really I like all their voices. And yeah it is hard to think that Curry's voice that is a really deep male voice also was the voice of Zevran.

I like the English VA. The american VA confuses me as I have no idea which part of the USA he is supposed to be from.

I wish they didn't alter Jon Curry's voice at all, but it works really well when you are a Qunari or Dwarf.
He likely did a deeper register, but you can sort of tell it was put an octave lower in post.

Honestly, I think all of them are terrible. Nicholas Boulton and Jo Wyatt blow all 4 of these voice actors out of the water. And I think it is because, like others have said, these VAs were instructed to deliver their lines in a more neutral fashion. And guess what? Neutral = snooze fest. By far the worst offender is AWR: "What's going on here?" Like she's just interrupted someone's tea party instead of Corypheus. >_>
But even though they are all pretty bad, the American VAs are better than the British ones, because at least they don't sound so snooty and prissy, like they could never hold a greatsword without toppling over from the weight.

I prefer the male American accent. Honestly though, I don't think Alex should have voiced a protagonist in Inquisition -- compared to Joy Wyatt, British FemInquisitor sounds incredibly dull. I expected more from her.

While I don't necessarily disagree with the OP, I think it fits perfectly for my slightly aloof but idealistic, moderately andrastian, Josie romancing human noble warrior. Slay demons and save the world during the day, sip brandy and talk politics at night ... all in the same voice.

I thought both the British actors were better than the American ones.
I was always surprised they didn't use the higher priced talent on the protagonist
Though the guy who did male Hawke was great and both Shepherds were good too

I am English but have a deep voice IRL. I cannot play with the squeaky, posh, prep-school voice of Harry. The thing is, Alix is also well spoken but you can also tell she is no slave to Received Pronunciation like Harry. She speaks with a natural-sounding, well-educated but not aristocratic, London-style, "Estuary English", which is how most people I know talk. Harry sounds like he went to Eton, because he actually did... and it is off-putting to me. I guess to an American, he might sounds like some sort of fairy tale prince so if that's your thing then great. I haven't really played with Sumalee yet but from what I've heard she sounds very sultry which didn't suit my my teeny tiny elf but maybe for a human, if I do another female PT. Not really interested in Dwarves or Qunari.

All of the VA's sound very flat to me this time around, I much preferred Hawke's more emotional deliveries. It feels so weird to see the great voice acting of all the companions followed by my Inquisitor's flat tone.
With that said, I think the male english VA is my least favorite, with the female english VA being my preferred (seems to have the most emotion to me).

I thought the English male voice worked the best for my canon inquisitor.
Overall, it is my favorite.
