Souls travel through the blight and one can draw magic from the blight instead of the Fade.

I tend to theorize that the blight is like an anti-Fade thing.... like a negative Fade... or something...

Lyrium is the physical manifestation of the Fade in the material realm, perhaps the blight is a physical manifestation of... Nothing? The Void? Eeeevvviiillllll??

We're not sure if the blight came from the Fade, but we do know the ancient magisters fell out of the Black/Golden City, became darkspawn, and then the Blights started happening.

The blight may have always been deep under Thedas and maybe darkspawn didn't exist until the ancient magisters became tied to it somehow.

Souls travel through the blight?

Hmmm yes. The taint might always have been around, and it wasn't until the magisters returned, and maybe one of them created the first broodmother,
the beginning of the darkspawn horde!

And it's interesting to think that the taint might be the physical manifestation of the Void,
whatever the void might truly be(the black city?).

Has there ever been a tainted spirit? That isn't Justice, since he's sharing Anders's body so he doesn't really count?

It's the archdemons that they hear singing not the taint itself.  It's how the darkspawn seek out a new archdemon to taint.  Basically think of it like a beacon and the closer you get the louder the beeping is.  Since most darkspawn are basically mindless creatures it may take them hundreds of years to find the next archdemon.  As to if the archdemons were powerful sentient dragons, corrupted elven gods or something else no one knows for sure.

I always assumed that when people heards 'singing' in DA2 that was because of Corypheus.

I don't think so,not that we've seen anyway. Though i read about some grey warden mages willingly becoming abominations
when being overcome by darkspawn, nearing their end. They would only do this when death was certain, hoping to take as many
darkspawn as possible with them!

I do wonder how(or if) a spirit would be affected by controlling a living body carrying the taint.

I dont know, but I think its safe to say that a spirit will not be affected by the taint. True, we only have justice who was in Kristoff's and Anders' bodies, but I think that's a good enough example for the time being.

Yeah but kristoffs body was dead, and Anders still had his soul. We still haven't seen a spirit
control a living, tainted and vacant body.
Their might of course not be an effect at all, but i wonder if a spirit could interpret the song from the taint.

it's been established that spirits do not go near the black city, and all points in the fade are equidistant from the black city (source: Codex entry http://dragonage.wik..._The_Black_City )

Yet the fear demon was practically nesting right on top of it. look up and you'll see that his domain is closer to the city than any other part of the fade you've been in since DA:O. Perhaps because he had fed on the fears of Thedas since the very first blight and was possibly connected to it since he worked with Corypheus.

Even Solas makes mention of it, saying it's 'almost close enough to touch.' and there's something in his voice. It's either awe or hope.

I may be reading a little between the lines here, but I suspect that the Taint originates from the section of the Fade spoken of as The Void. In the Codex entry for Andruil it refers to the Goddess of The Hunt having gone into the Void to hunt. That they took on an armor constructed of the Void and that it changed her. That it began to corrupt her the longer she stayed in contact with the armour and the Void.

My suspicion is that when Fen'harel sealed away the Elven Gods he did so in the Void. Which is part of the Fade, but inaccessible without knowing how to get there. Just like how The Black City is always visible at the centre of the Fade, but cannot be reached without knowing how. I think there is absolutely a tangible link between the two - that The Black City actually is Arlathan transported with the Gods inside it, to the Void.

Now stick with me here. The Blight is native to the Void. It currupted the City. It corrupted the Elven Gods, until they became the Twisted Old Gods of Tevinter. Those gods called out to the Waking World, the Magister's of Tevinter answered. And yes, the Blight in Thedas still began with them, but only because they breached the Veil and physically entered the Void. At which point they were corrupted at the very source of the Blight and those fleeing tainted Arlathan brought it back into the real world as the first Darkspawn of Thedas.

That's my personal belief, at this time. Spirits exist in The Fade, but maybe NOT within the Void.

You and I see this alike.

I don't think you're reading too much into it at all, I think this is by far the best possible guess given what we know so far.

Well, we definately have some evidence that something very similar to the taint was around before humans ever came onto the main stage of Thedas.  In addition to Anduril's codex entry about fighting in the void, and how she had made armor of the void, both of which drove her mad the more she fought, there's a song in the Temple of Mythal to Falon'Din,

The People swore their lives to Falon'Din

Who mastered the dark that lies.
Whose shadows hunger
Whose faithful sing
Whose wings of death surround him
Thick as night.

Lethanavir, master-scryer, be our guide,
Through shapeless worlds and airless skies.

──Song to Falon'Din, found in the Temple of Mythal, author unknown

which also sounds very much as if he has gained some mastery ancient blighted creatures/the source of the taint.  I also think that Falon'Din's assosciation with guiding the dead plays into this as well.

I think people are reading far too much into this darkness motif.

Yeah but that's because they're physically in the fade! The reason the black city is always seen
at a distance is probably because it is physically in the fade, not a natural part of it.
So the only way to approach it is to be physically there aswell!

I say that's hope in his voice! Hope for the future plot points! :D

You can never read too much into darkness! :P Darkness is an empty image, needing to be filled.

If it originated in the Fade, it originated in the Black City.

Spirits don't got to the Black City anymore than anyone else does.
