I've been battling this dragon recently and I just keep getting rekt.

My party is lvl 14-15 - me necro/fire mage, Blackwall super tank, Vivienne cold/knight enchanter and Sera dual wield backstabber. The fight goes pretty smoothly until the dragon does the wing flapping thing and pulls my mages close and deals serious damage. Is there a way to defend against this? I can survive it a few times, but I have only limited 8 potions and Vivienne can only use the complete regeneration skill once. I tried positioning my mages behind some rocks, but they just keep running out of cover to shoot at the dragon and then they're an easy target. How can I make them stay in cover? This game really lacks the aggressive/ranged behavior settings from DA:O...

Any advice would be welcome.

Fire resistance tonic helps, as for the flappy wings things just have your range/casters move in close it only does damage to you if your standing outside of the white ring it make while it using the ability.

Make sure Vivienne (if your own character is not a mage), has the Spirit Blade (destroys guard in seconds) and Fade Cloak abilities (barrier brought up and maintained by doing damage).  With this combination, that mage can maintain full barrier through the entire fight and take no damage.  I always make sure that each of my characters has a full 5 replenishment potions as well as all of the companions have a limit of 2, I believe, health potions they will use.  They won't use anymore after this.  Control Vivienne during the battle and you'll always have one person alive.  I tend to micro-manage a bit when at lower levels with dragons, to ensure I use the replenishment potions when necessary, leaving the potion use to be the last.  You can change all companions potions limit to 3, ensuring that everyone has the same amount of potions to use.

Have ranged stand as close to the dragon as possible without being close enough to get hit by its melee attacks. Once the wings start up you will only get hit once or twice.

There are in general only two factors to focuse on:

1. Armor
2. Fire resistance

Use Cassandra as Templar and/or Blackwall as Champion - both equipped with the best (of the best) armor.
Cassandra is practically invincible if you set her up right. I prefer her in any dragon battle.
Vivienne as Knight Enchanter - set up properly the is the ultimate killer machine. A good choice. Maybe let her use focus for her abilities. Then she can use 'Fade Step'.

If you want to use a rogue make sure it's an archer and NOT a dual wield. They die. Period. They are your worst choice in the game. Skip Sera and bring Cassandra instead.
An archer can use 'Leaping Shot' which does serious damage against the dragons armor. And it has a fast cooldown.
Then you have 'Mark of Death' in combination with 'Mark of the Rift' if you feel like it. If you have the triple Focus perk (300%) you should be able to suck between 30 and 45% off his health if you do it right.

As for being a necromancer I advise you to use 'Haste' (consumes Focus). Be aware it might interfere with Vivienne if she is allowed to use 'Fade Step' and your rogue if you chose to use 'Mark of the Rift'.

The main protection is actually fire resistance.

* Have some Fire Resistance Tonics equipped.

* Get 'Superb Belt of Fire Resistance' (+ 30% Fire Resistance)
1. Crestwood: Complete all 3 astrariums and find it in the cave opened.
2. Forbidden Oasis, Temple of Pride ("The Fire Captured"). Requires 6 shards to open the main door, 6 for the first fire door, 12 for the second and 18 for the last door. A total of 42 shards.
You can farm this belt if you leave at least 1 item in the chest/coffin, leave the map and travel back to a full coffin. Four belts are enough.

* Craft armor with fire resistance:

Dragon Webbing (4%)
Dragon Scales (4%)
Dragon Bone (4%)
Dragonling Scales (2.5%)
Gurgut Webbing (3%)
Wyvern Scales (3.5%)

You can travel to The Hissing Wastes and kill a couple of Wyverns. It will do. They are to be found east and south in the map. Just be sure you get enough for all armors.

As for using runes I prefer Spirit Rune for the mages and Dragon-slaying Rune for everyone else.

* Have some Healing and Regeration Potions equipped.

@ZordonMV: I personally wouldn't have made Sera a duel wielder as her special tree is specific (just in my opinion) to ranged fighting.  I use Cole with his Assassin tree as my duel wielder instead.  Along with Poison Weapons he can do massive damage.  Ever since DA2 when I realised I could train people in something but they'd never be able to actually do it, I've left people in the specialisation that the game intended for them to be in.  The Necromancy tree won't be much help with the dragons as they'll likely be immune to most of the status effects the necromancer generates.

Maybe not against the abyssal high dragon, but lightning dragons are weak to spirit damage, aren't they? A lot of the necro's abilities deal spirit damage.

Anyway, the main thing with the abyssal dragon (all dragons really) is to stay as close as possible so that the wing vortex and breath attacks aren't a problem. I like to get my rogue underneath the dragon if I can. If the dragon starts to lift her leg, move to a different leg to avoid the swipe. If the dragon flies up to move to a different location or starts retreating, immediately use gap closing abilities so that you're underneath or beside the dragon when she starts doing a breath attack.

Dragons hit hard, but they're slow and have big tells. Movement is your advantage.

This. Or switch to Varric and hit it with Hail of Arrows.

(We seem to dish out the same dragon killing advice don't we? )

I didn't know I won't get hit by flappy wings if I stand really close to the dragon, thx!

Also I would love to get a fire resistance tonic, but where do you get the recipe? In my 35hrs or so of gameplay I've found only 1 tonic and 1 grenade recipe - did I miss something?

All the resistance tonics can be bought in Val Royeaux. Look under the "recipes" icon, I think.

When the dragon starts that wing flap bs you can see the circle aura of it. If you stay inside the circle you won't take any damage from that attack. Staying that close does leave you vulnerable to more melee attacks but if you do plenty of crafting to keep up good armour then you don't take too much damage from the melee attacks.

Plus, she won't do any melee attacks while flapping. It's an excellent time to puke out your most damaging melee attacks without interruption.
