Along this line, I have to object to Blackwall being True or Lawful Neutral. He deeply believes his previous actions were wrong, and if he could, according to the semi-psychic spirit we let just roam around, he "would stand between Rainier and the carriage". Hell, the Good "redeemed" former murderer/thief/whathaveyou is something of cliché. Ultimately, while he can arguably be simply trying to cover his tracks for his own sake, when he sacrifices his life to turn himself in and save his man it basically cements him as (now, at least) Good. It also points towards Lawful, but there are some other problems.

Lawful might be a lot more problematic. Regret over an action only goes so far if you continually repeat it, and Blackwall lies about his very identity. Still, that lie is not the only part of his character (part of the problem will dealing with complex people), and he generally tries to aspire to the stereotypical Lawful Good hero in all else.

He may be moving towards LG

but when he murdered that family he was following orders

he was a soldier who followed orders without fail.

He wasn't a good man who had a moment of weakness, he did the same thing he always did.

So I'd say LN

If he is LG I think you can only really argue he makes it there after he surrenders himself to save Mornay

Hmm... To complicate matters, if I use the Planescape extended alignments I’d probably change some characters' alignments to:
Varric, Solas: Neutral Good (leaning Chaotic)
Blackwall: Lawful Neutral (leaning Good)
Vivienne: Lawful Neutral (leaning Evil)
Sera, Isabela: Chaotic Neutral (leaning Good)

...probably change some other companions too, but have to think.

Didn't he murder that man and his family for money though? IIRC it wasn't ordered, but his own choice.

I'd still call him LN at the time though, one action does not instantly change your alignment. Afterwards though he becomes the Atoner, doing as much LG stuff as he can. By the time you recruit him I'd say he's achieved LG status because of that.

I would call Sten Lawful Neutral, since he's so devoted to the Qun.

I would also say that Anders is chaotic neutral.

Agreed

Sera is about standing for the common people against selfish nobles which is chaotic good.

Isabella is simple, lawless and uninterested in good or evil -so chaotic neutral

Anders was originally chaotic neutral but then he became possessed by a spirit. this drove him to evil acts while he was trying to resist and do good.

Vivienne about preserving order and maintainging old rules so Lawful Neutral.

Cassandra believes in the importance of law but believe it must serve people and be reformed if neccesary so Lawful Good

"Sten" followed his strict rules so Lawful Neutral

Morrigan - i'm yet to understand her motivations - she comes across as Chaotic Neutral but could be a good liar

Leiliana and Zevren were both assassins and in early D&D assassins were strictly evil, Leiliana seems to ne trying to turn good but her left-hand role moved her away from that
