difference between the Chantry Garden and the Herb Garden upgrade in Skyhold?

I want to upgrade the garden in Skyhold, but the descriptions are a bit too vague for me. The chantry garden upgrade is described to bring "a potential resource gain from the inspired, including gold from tithes" and the herb garden "allows more herbs to be harvested".

I'd like to know how exactly the two options differ in the end.

The default garden (and I think the Chantry Garden) has 2 pots, the Herb Garden has 6 pots.  When you unlock the Chantry Garden you get a one time War Table mission to go collect the tithe and earn money.  Once.

Go with Herb.

I've never tried the chantry option but the herb option is very helpful since it will allow me to get 6 of what I need, every time I leave and then enter Skyhold.

Neither is much good, six herbs that you could gather in five minutes or less, or a one time war table mission for 100 or so gold, which you could farm in less time thatn the mission takes.

Only reaon I go there is to talk to Morrigan now and then, otherwise it's wasted space.

Either way, both options provide 100% more utility than "Sparring Grounds vs Infirmary" and "Mage vs Templar Tower."

Yep, none of the upgrades mean much, no usefulness added at all. Not even codex entries in there. Your forces don't kill more enemies on scouting or at Arbor wilds because of a sparing ring and, you don't get any sort of healing bonus for the infirmary. The mage tower doesn't have harrowing, or even young mages to train, there isn't an enchanter there you can get a quest from. The Templar hold does nothing either. Basically you spend hours hunting down the supplies to upgrade and get nothing in return. You don't even get the rest of Skyhold repaired for your efforts.

I did the upgrades intentionally once, now I just grab quarries or logging stands if I happen across them, not worth any effort. Everything you need is found out in the world for crafting, and any upgrades don't do anything drastic cosmetically even.

The infirmary doesn't even get the wounded troops out of the courtyard, they (or their bodies) are all still just lying there. -__-

As far as collections go...

You'll get a new song for the Patron of the Arts collection, by building the Herb Garden.

You'll get a new banner crown for the Skyhold Customizations : Banners collection, by building the Chantry Garden.

You can check it out here.

Again cosmetics only, nothing useful. What is the point of doing the upgrades if they are strictly cosmetic, doesn't change anything in the game, give you anything you can use that you can't get just as fast and easy elsewhere (and that's only the herb pots in the garden) Not like you need a song to kill an enemy (we don't have a bard class that actually fights with music.) and, you don't need a banner crown to claim things.

Well and good for completionists that must have all of everything but, generally pointless.

Having the herb garden allows me to fully upgrade my tonics and grenades faster, while I'm out doing other things...and also it's kept me from running out of blood lotus since I keep those seeds growing when I have all my tonics and grenades upgraded.  :)

That's why I've always gone with the Sparring ground.

It's a shame that sparring field isn't more active though, like at Haven.

True, but that means the building next to the requisition officer will be left in ruin.  I'd rather have some soldiers in tents than rubble everywhere.

I usually get the herb garden upgrade because I never seem to have enough blood lotus. Yeah, you can get 15 of them by doing a quick sweep of Lake Luthias in the Hinterlands, but I can get 21 of them by doing that and having the herb garden, so yay.
