Serious genuine real talk now though.

No creme de la meme elfy business.

This is a video game. This is Thedas. This is NOT your personal tumblr or whatever. People are NOT going to use fancy gender-neutral pronouns in this setting because they're scared they might trigger someone. This is a world where demons literally FALL OUT OF THE SKY and zombie ghoul monsters with poison blood CRAWL OUT OF THE GROUND. I very much doubt the first thing going through someone's mind in Thedas is "do I refer to this person as he, she, zhe, it or they", it's probably something more along the lines of "I seriously hope I'm not stabbed to death or set on fire today". Just because you're a sensitive snowflake and your heart aches whenever a white cis male calls you by your genetic gender doesn't mean that the developers of a videogame are going to EDIT THEIR PRE-RECORDED LINES to pander to 'muh gender-neutral pronoun anti-oppression gamergate no negative reaction lyfestyle'. That costs money and recording time. They could use that money and recording time to make a DLC that actually expands on the story, or on the characters, or what have you.

I know that MIGHT seem a bit harsh. I know I MIGHT seem like a bit of a arse right now. I know this was a suggestion, and I know it's on the BSN so it should be expected. But, jesus christ, it's 3:30 am and this is literally the dumbest **** I've seen all day. And all yesterday too, honestly.

Dude i love you.

said everything I wanted to say, but my rudimentary knowledge of English, and lack of oratory skills prevents me.

There is no such thing as over reacting to such stupidity. These kinds of things are just so far out idiotic it is every ones duty as a human being to say No! in the most direct and forceful manner ever because these types of people are never satisfied. Ever. They keep on picking and prodding and out right bullying to change the world in their image. They are narrow minded people and wont rest until they change things until the normal of us wont even recognize things.

I did see people picking, prodding, and outright bullying. I also saw people who more or less stated that they only want the world to reflect their own ideals. However, I did not see the OP do it.

I have to say, while I think it's fantastic of Bioware to be more inclusive of a wide audience of players in it's depictions of their protagonists and their characters, I have to say I think an attempt to make thing more "gender neutral" is the source behind quit a few issues in the game.

-Making all hairstyles available for both men and women is nice, but at the same time few of said hairstyles look too good on either gender.

-Only three nearly identical customization sets of the same basic armor for our schematics, have a feeling this was also borne of a desire to ensure that both genders got a fair shake, and that's cool too.

-The "dreaded pajamas" too I should think. No formal attire is in Inquisition as is found in prior Dragon Age games or Mass Effect. Instead we got a nice, inoffensive, gender-neutral pair of PJ's.

-Sending each and every member of the Inquisition to a Royal Orlesian Ball in red pantsuits.

Again, I think Bioware are f*cking rock stars for being more inclusive of more people. But I have to say I think trying to make things 'Gender-Neutral' might have done a bit more harm than good in my book.

Yes, they are. It's called "Grammatical Gender". Been around since -- literally -- ancient times.

I'm an English teacher, and it is currently considered to be sexist language in most if not all academic circles. In fact the textbook I teach out of has a section called "Sexist Language" and offers examples to students on how to avoid it.

It hurts no one to at least discuss and work slowly towards changing the way we deal with gender and language. Meanwhile, doing nothing, or worse, mocking or insulting those who politely suggest or ask for change, accomplishes nothing.

I actually really appreciated being referred to as "my lady" or "Lady Cadash/Lavellan" instead of "serrah."

same. It wasn't often enough that it got annoying but it wasn't so rare I thought I was playing a dude either.

1. Dragon's Dogma did it and did it well.

2. Actually not having to make male and female versions of each armor should mean we would have more, not fewer, options.

3. What would you have preferred, a frilly nightie for female inquisitors?

4. We're soldiers representing a military organization. And when you start putting female player characters in very feminine attire you start taking away the ability to role play. Best case scenario would be equal choices of clothing for both genders, but in the absence of that, all characters should have the same uniform.

Something that annoys me in SWtOR is being called "sir" all the time >_<

Why would you think you're playing a dude just because you were addressed with a gender neutral term? That would be like me asking my students to call me "Lady Doctor" instead of just "Doctor." (Even so I still get students asking me if I'm a Mrs. or a Miss... something my male colleagues NEVER have to deal with, whether they have a doctorate or not.)

I don't mind it for my Sith Warriors because she's not bothered by that kind of thing but it was a bit odd for my SI.

Because it's offputting to me. If you're fine with it that's great.

That does remind me of how Janeway insisted on being called "ma'am" instead of "sir." xD

But anyway, "sir" is indeed masculine but "serrah" is gender neutral.

I'd rather be acknowledged as female than be male or gender neutral. :?

Okay a little history lesson for the OP and all who thinks it should be *fixed*:

There was a christian chirch book back in 1486, which pretty easily explains why women were called as they were in Latin (femines). It's named Malleus Maleficarum - and as a Catholic I love it.

English version is available at any time here http://www.malleusma...leusAcrobat.pdf

So, basically, what are 'femines'?

Fe = less, Mina = faith. That's how the Church tells us men should call females. And I say 'wo-men', basically 'womb men' are as close to neutral as you ever gonna get. Just like men, but different in this exact way.

So please quit whining on that feminist crap or I'll bring even more stuff on board to show you what IS actually offensive and discriminating and what IS NOT. Bioware has a game to fix so people can play it, not enough time to deal with this nonsense.

Thanks.

And I prefer being gender neutral :) It's hard to accommodate both I guess.

What we can both likely agree with is to avoid using masculine terms and pronouns to refer to women or groups of men and women.

Quoting recent documents on how millennia-old grammar conventions are now to be considered sexist does not corroborate the claim that they are sexist. They are, at best, one more voice in the chorus clamoring for politically-motivated language mutilation.

What annoys me most about this type of discussion is that extremely worthwhile issues get buried under a heap of diversionary PC crap. We still have serious, real issues with topics such as equal pay (for equal work); recognition of housework in general and child-raising in particular (e.g. w.r.t. old age pensions); female participation in governing bodies etc. (along with similar, mirrored issues on the male side (e.g., health protection in general, suicide rates in particular)). How about we focus on the important stuff first and see where the normal linguistic evolutionary process takes us instead of trying to force change that risks alienating a lot of people? It's never worked before, you know. Language is like water, it finds its own way. Maybe we'll end up with such language in a few decades anyway. I don't know.

The best request ever. Gender differences is just a cancer in human kind. There is no reason for assigning differences to genders except for men to destroy women. Even in language. So yeah, if Bioware is up for changing something start getting rid of gender instead of multiplying it. It is not about being man, woman, trans man, tras woman, or gender queer or whatever. Gender is the most basic lie of the self/identity and should cease to exist, since in real life it will take time at least in game we could start the revolution.

Gender differences aren't cancer, those are natural; feminist activists that think they must be treated different just because they're females definitely are.
