More like the reverse Liara. Liara discovers the thing that saves us, while Varric discovers what dooms us.
Varric also isn't the most powerful and dangerous person in the world by proxy the way Liara is with her Shadow Broker network. Nor is he ever a romance option. Nor does his personality do a total 180 in the next game after his first appearance like Liara's. Nor does Varric ever save Hawke or the Inquisitor like Liara saves Shepard. In short, he's nothing like Liara.
complete writer's pet
wat
Can't romance him.
Uh, don't you mean Harding?
Gosh, do all Dwarves look the same to you? ![]()
How come they keep kicking him in the balls, then?
Liara is the only one who could hold her own and was even more important than Shepard in some instances.
Varric is a drinking buddy to the Inquisitor at best.
At least you aren't pushed towards romancing Varric like you are with Liara in ME. It's waaay too obvious bioware wanted the canon romance to be Liara. I didn't even like her, so I found that annoying.
With Varric, I didn't feel like he was forced as your friend in Inquisition. In fact, it feels a bit more difficult to befriend him then other character's because he feels distanced from the PC due to his/her status as Inquisitor. He never treated my Inquisitor as warmly as he did Hawke, despite having high approval with him.
Liara is the Liara of Liara
Let that nugget sink in muchachos!

So it's a close resemblance, then?
A non-Leliana is Liara topic...Weird.
And Varric can totally hate you

Hmm? not really. He isn't particularly powerful (not compared to everyone else anyway), he narrates but isn't really essential to the plot, he doesn't have specialist knowledge about things you need to know to defeat the big bad, he isn't even a romance option in contrast to Liara who felt like the "canon" romance and while he was buddies with Hawke I didn't feel like he was anywhere near as close a friend to the Inquisitor (makes sense since Hawke and him knew each other much longer) and he can hate your guts just everyone else in your group. He (surprisingly) seems to be the one who gets hung up on the whole "Herald" thing the most and by his own admission finds you intimidating and needs reminders that you are a person to.

I've heard about you.
As for getting rid of, can't Varric leave under certain circumstances?
Not sure, don't think it's possible for any of your companions to leave in this game (due to low approval anyway) I drove cassandra to drunkeness but she still stuck around. Kinda disappointing that way, and also in how none of your companions can die due to your actions or decisions.
