I suspect Solas might be the preferred romance of the younger crowd, the type who prefers tortured types, ala Loki. That kind of thing is popular right now in the tumblr-aged crowd...although I could be wrong.

I like it because it's plot central, and Solas is an intellectually deep character with many layers. I like Norse culture and I've never seen that Loki movie. It looks kind of silly. Just as I prefer my Sherlock Holmes in the dusty pages of my Complete Arthur Conan Doyle.
The romance was subtle and mostly composed of Mordin-esque philosophical discussion. What's not to like about that? By this point, I realized it might also be more plot central than I'd anticipated, and I was hooked:

I've done Blackwall's romance and am halfway through Cullen's, and everybody's got their own preferences, but for me neither of those can hold a candle to Solavellan, even with its pits of despair and unresolved ending.
