DAI does have a lot of "optional" exploration content.  But I think the weakness is that this content tends to be rather week.  There are good stories to be found, like Crestwood's undead problem.  Or rescuing the soldiers in Fallow Mire.  Frankly I think it could have done with more of these large, involved stories that were more in-depth that "go to X and kill stuff" (looking at you, Exalted Plains)

It doesn't have to tie into the main story, it just has to be interesting in and of itself.

I agree.  In fact I thought Fallow Mire was a lot of fun.  At times you do get that feeling of being disconnected from the game, or wondering just how and if what you're doing is going to fit in, which could be a real problem when you're dealing with planets.

Reading between the lines on some posts here, I think the problem isn't that there are so many things to do, it's that there are so many things that are on the map at any one time.  It can sometime urge people to try and "clear" the map.  I think people who aren't fans of DA;I-style exploration might be more attracted to it if the map displayed only the points of interest connected to the current quest, or if it was based on proximity, or some other sort of filter.

But all that stuff is in DA:I.  If you don't explore the Hinterlands, you don't find that cult that lives in the castle with the Rift, you don't find the scout who snuck away with her apostate girlfriend for a picnic, you don't chance upon Red Templars fighting a bear, you don't suddenly find a castle that needs clearing out, and you're never told where the dragon is until you chance upon it.  And the Wedge of Destiny.  How else are you going to get a unique weapon like that without exploring?

All that stuff is pretty hard to miss. There is no sense of discovery with it. I was told to go there; I was told who to talk to. it would be pretty hard not to with the giant exclamation marks. The scout and her girlfriend mission comes from a guy standing on the road you have to take to get to that area. the cult and rift mission I get from someone at the crossroads, I have to go to the crossroads. What I’m trying to say is there no sense of discovery when you are told where to go and who to talk to and when you do accomplish your task there no sense of reward for it. Like I said the dragon part was the best part of DAI IMO because it created that sense of discovery for me. Getting vengeance out of the deathclaw sanctuary was fun because it was something I randomly found

Hoping game takes more cues from ME2 personally.

As far as exploration goes really hoping next ME3 doesn't follow DAI down the rabbit hole of open world fetch at expense of story content. I'm fine for ME1's Mako's return and there to be some exploration but i hope its structured around story missions, not massive empty worlds.

I hope exploration isn't all tied back into story missions. That's the fastest way to make the MEU even smaller than they've already made it seem.
