And is it dependent on the shield's Armour rating?

I ask because Shield Wall, when used with a crafted shield that now has 0 Armour, appears to generate no Guard.

I think your missing the real question here. How did you craft a shield with 0 armor?

You can craft a 0 armor item? O__o

 

Anyways I have no experience with that, but it also seems to be related to the amount of damage that you are blocking (or possibly what type of attack). If I block a normal melee swing from a wolf or something I get like 1 metal bar, or sometimes not even that (a shattered-looking metal bar). However, when fighting the Forannan Ravine rift in Hinterlands at level 5 (the rift is level 12), I blocked a despair demon's ice mine attack and got nearly full guard from it, 5 out of 6 bars. And I've had times where I used shield wall against a dragon's breath attack and it both instantly gave me full guard and instantly drained all my stamina

He didn't craft a 0 armor shield, probably. If he's like me, when he downloaded the patch 3, any shields that he'd already crafted lost all armor rating. So the shields I had crafted for Cass and Blackwall, were worthless after the patch and I had to make new shields for them.

AFAIK its just straight up 15% guard per hit. I highly recommend using it with a shield that isn't bugged out.

Blocking attacks from Vinsomer generates no Guard (and thus quickly kills Blackwall).

these is a difference between a better shield and a broken shield. Shields aren't supposed to have 0 armor. That shield is broken.

It talks in percentages. The more hits it abosrbs the more the guard increases

varies depending if you have buffs on and such. I can just about always have max guard on which really helps vs dragons and other boss type enemies.
