@ Vor - If it is water colours like the ones you have, then I do all the mixing on paper. Between adding layer upon layer of colour, I blot with a paper towel to absorb the extra moisture. You are right - not much control, but generally the final effect is great :)

@ Ceru - I work in acrylics mostly. I used to do oils, but I do not have a large enough space for that anymore, and the smell is too strong for me. I also like water colours, though I think it is a difficult medium. As for asking my hubby to sit for me - he couldn't do it. He just has too much energy, and has to be on the move all the time. So, I have to use photos :)

Panels are looking great :)

@ ACD - Happy B-Day!!!!! And happy drawing :D

@Tesh: thanks :)

I'd suggest tied him to the kitchen chair and cut his hair... Oh no, that's a song. Please don't do that to your hubby or cute cat they won't like it. I'm sorry for the bad jokes, please bear with me

Wait, how can oil takes more place than acrylic...?

@ Ceru - Baaahahahahaaa :D The day that I will have the strength to do that to him... He'll turn me into a pretzel first :P He would make a great model, but, yeah... No patience :)

It's not that oil colours would take up more space, it's just that the smell is very strong, and I would need a large work space to be able to paint comfortably, without being affected by the smell. In other words, I'd need an atelier... :)

Happy birthday ACD :)

I feel like a teenage girl again (yeah, beleive it girl, you're 42 and you think you're 15? pfff) and after an obsession with Cullen, it is time to be overly obsessed with Farkas again (it's a cycle ... Alistair, Anders, Bishop, Cullen, Farkas). Thing is I can only draw eyes right now :/ Every time I try to draw the rest of a face, it goes weird and it's so wrong :/

Ceru: I really love your little fairy and the colors and ... it's cute :) Hallelujah ^-^

And of course, i like every post here (not enough "like" :/)

Happy birthday, ACD! I hope it's still your birthday in your country!  :wizard:

I'm out of likes, but everyone have a heart  <3

@Ceru I love them! Specially the first one with the strong light and dark contrast. Yes, there are watercolour in tubes, as you say it's a paste you have to dillute with water and then you can mix it. I don't know if there are cheap tubes or if they sell them; here in Spain art supplies shops tend to have the really expensive, professional stuff. I remember when I was in the Netherlands, and I also saw them in Berlin, there were these "general crafts" shops where you could buy all kinds of supplies in different qualities, but I still didn't see them here.

@Tesh thanks for the advice! I'll follow it :) I love the effect of layering colours. When I first considered starting with colours, I always thought that I'd use oils, because I love how they look on classic oil paintings. But before I even started, something inside me said "Nope". But with watercolours, when I saw them at the store I felt I really wanted to try them. Do you guys also get that feeling? That some media "call you" at an instinctive level? (maybe I'm just crazy  =] )

@Morlanwen: at the tips & resources thread there is a pdf book about drawing faces, and also general tips to draw a face. I used to do the same as you, started with the eye and then the rest of the face. But it's much better to start with the general face structure (the famous ball and reference lines) and then build on the details.

@ Morlanwen - Yessss!!! I WANT Farkas :D Moar moar moar :D

If you are struggling with drawing the entire face, start from the outside in, rather the inside out (i.e. from the edges to the eyes, than eyes to the edges). I know you want to get right down to the fun part, but if you have a little patience, your drawing will improve dramatically by just changing the way you start your work :)

@ Vor - The only thing I have ever really wanted to do, as soon as I saw it, was digital work :) Starting with pixel art, back in the 90's, when I had an Amiga :) I can completely understand having a medium call out to you :)

@Tesh Ooooh the Amiga! I remember that Tutankhamun mask on the box to advertise the painting software. I was totally scared of it, at that time I was still with my borrowed pens and reused papers

@ al - OooOOooo Loooooooove it so far :) Don't worry about the ear. You have to pay close attention to actually notice it. You've done a really great job building the figure up. The only recommendation I would have is to hold back on doing all the details before drawing in the major lines of your figure (i.e. armour, clothing, etc.). It might help avoid "Aw, dang!" moments :)

Excellent work! Looking forward to seeing the progress you'll make :)

So, I finished the lines, and now on to the scary part: shading! I'm pretty happy with how it's turning out, I hope I don't mess it with the shading.

@ Ceru - I love your Elf :D For a mischievous expression, try nudging up one of her eyebrows and the corner of her mouth :) You are improving so much :D

@ Vor - Love the concept :) Can't wait to see the shading :D

@ Morlanwen - The shading is really nice. Here is some encouragement to draw in all of Farkas' face :D

@Morlanwen but... but I see lips, and eyebrows, and a nose *scratches head*

@Ceru I like how your "mischief" is going. I'm on my tablet, but for now she's looking quite proportionate.
And yes, that is blood... naughty, naughty Ghilan'nain.

Edit to add: Thank you, Tesh!

@morlanwen: actually the style reminds me of a drawing about Che Guevara that I saw once...

@tesh: will try with the eyebrow & mouth. Thanks ;)
(Whoops, I don't have reference actually for this one so I tried to make "mischievous" grin in front of the mirror... Acd101's technique :P )

@vor: please don't kill the Hallas... :(
You will colour her with dark tones or lighter colouring? Just curious...

Hi again Shantia, good to see you around! How is your Egyptian princess going?

@Ceru This one will be shades of grey, when I make the watercolour version it'll be mostly light colours; I want to give her a fair maiden look contrasting with the strange mask and the blood on the scalpel.

As for hallas don't worry, she doesn't kill her favourite live beings... but when it comes to her experiments, she doesn't mind getting her hands dirty MWAHAHAHA *insert image of mad scientist madly laughing*

@Vor: oooh I think I'll be joining your watercolour adventure... Someone gave me a starter set for watercolour + a pad of watercolour pad today :D
Can't wait to ser how it goes compared to Digital. Only 6 colours though, that solid boxes format. Nah I'll try Tesh's idea of layering

@Ceru Yay Team Watercolour! :D It's great to see colours build up layer after layer. Share your first impressions when you start using them!

Hehe sure! (But it won't be anytimr soon, still so many things to finished!)

You seems to really like it. May I ask the reason? Just curious, it's interesting to ser how some people are called by certain mediums :)

Sure! I don't know if I can give you a specific reason, though. As I was telling Tesh the other day, my favourite paintings were always classic oils; but when it came to me using them, I really didn't feel like it. Then I thought about using watercolours, tried watercolour pencils first, and something inside me said "Yes, I like this" Then I've seen watercolour and pencil paintings by several artists (there is this woman that makes really gorgeous ones, but I saw them on TV and can't recall the name) and I really like the result. They are colourful but unless the artist wants to go otherwise, a very clean look. I grew up reading Tintin comics and I love that aesthetic, clean and colourful with defined borders.

It's very recently that I started using them, but when I paint, I love building up colours with layers and playing with different amounts of water and pigment. They are a difficult medium to master but very funny to experiment with. I feel like a child, putting a colour over another and seeing both change, I go all "OooOOOooooh!" :D

So that's it, essentially ^^
