@Ceru Don't despair! I understand the need to create beautiful drawings, but we are also having fun and experimenting :)

To me, the main point of darkness is the colour of the sky, it looks like nighttime. I followed Tesh' example and looked for a reference, I think you want your sky to look something like this

Spoiler

So I think you need to add lighter tones to the sky that reflect on the ground, the tree and the girl. I think the girl and the tree should have lighter tones around the edges to show that the light is coming from a low point from behind. The first part of this video on shading metal includes tips on how to reflect light coming from the sky depending on where the skyline is set. It's very useful, I guess the same tips are valid for smooth surfaces, you just have to keep your edges... well, smooth :D You can just say "shod this" and not make it realist, but I think it would be good at least playing a bit with colour and light, even if you won't be including them in the final piece (that's the good thing of digital art!)

I need some opinions, too. I followed Ceru's advice and looked for paintings I like to copy their colour scheme. I'm finishing the greyscale shading of Ghilan'nain, and for the watercolour version I'm thinking of using one of Mucha's Precious Stones series: either the Ruby or the Amethyst one, though I'm leaning more towards the Amethyst. Here you can see all of them. Of course I'll just use the basic colours, not all of them. Thank you for your help!

@ Ceru - you worry too much :) But, it is good that you are asking questions. For the time being, just follow a few basic rules for lighting and shading. Do not go into details yet. Master the basics, and then add more complex elements to your composition.

For instance, for this piece try to follow two rules:

1. The farther something is from the viewer, the more washed out the colours become, and the less sharp the edges become.

2. Use one focal point (the point to which the eye of the viewer will be drawn to). In this case, your character's face would work best. You'll have the most detail and the brightest colours there.

Hope this helps :) And, you are doing really well so far, so do not be discouraged :)

@ Vor - The colour schemes in the watercolours you gave as an example are really beautiful. I really like the Amethyst one :) Can't wait to see your progress with Ghilan'nain :D

Thank you! It's on the finished works gallery, if you want to take a look :)

You're also doing well on the lips, that bottom left part looks so... how to say it, fleshy? :D Fleshy like full lips like those should look.

@ Shantia - She looks more and more beautiful :) When shading her lip, just remember that the upper lip is always a bit darker than the lower lip, because it is in shadow :) Glad you are feeling comfortable in this group - means we're doing things right :)

@Ceru Thank you so much! And yes she has some nice cheekbones going on :)

@Tesh Thanks! Thank you for reminding me about the lip :) And yes this group is awesome!

I am having problems with the neck area, I found a nice reference but whenever i try to do something it looks really bad, it always turn out looking like the neck is as close as the face, even if I put darker shading.

This is the reference I found, I've mirrored it whenever I use it.

@ Shantia - I find that shading the neck always turns out better if I do very soft shading, i,e, the edges of the shadow are soft. A lot depends on how the jawline is shaded. As you can see in the reference, the jawline is very subtle. Also, there is reflected light at the corner of the jaw and the chin. I'd have to see your progress to help more ;)

@Tesh I had already erased my older attempt at making a better neck, so I redid it but this tiem it's alot better than the previous attempt, so that's good. I am still having problem to make it fit the face, it just looks like they don't belong together, because I've done alot more work on the face, but I am just not sure how to get to that stage on the neck. And oh yeah, teh reflected light and bounde light and backlight and all those stuffs is also soemthing I am struggling with, I've tried it many times and it always looks stupid heheh.

@Shantia the neck looks definitely better now. I'm struggling with all the different types of light and shadows too (really I was amazed to discover there is more than one type of shadow!) I think it's better to have a good grasp on the basics and then building up on the more complex stuff. You did a good job of bringing out the shapes of her face :)

@Vor thank you! It is not easy at all hehe. Whenever I mirror the picture I still see a lot of things that are off, and then change them a bit and mirror back, but then it just looks more weird, I wodner if I've looked at the picture too much taht I've gotten too used to it, I saved as a new .psd and just painting in mirror now, trying to get everything to look correct :)

@ Shantia - The neck looks better now. Make sure to add a little shadow on the jawline as well, because the surface curves away from the viewer :)

Such beautiful work on here guys!! Wowie!! :D

I decided to try some b&w photography faces for a little while but I could sure use some help :( any pointers on sir jamie? Its his face angle and his downward pointing eyes and bah! So much wrong. I've been doing okay with the circle technique and then drawing the cross lines where his face is meant to point, but obviously still practicing...alot... :)

@Qween that is a great start! I think the eyes are a bit too big and the nose is too pointy?  But yes lookign great so far, can't wait to see your progress!

So to my own piece, I worked in mirror to try and fix the eye and nose issue once and for all, and I think it worked? Do they still look off to anyone? I added some more highlights, but I am afraid maybe I am going too light? I added some shading on the jaw (thanks Tesh) and I tried out some of that reflected light.

(really happy with my progress today so far)

@Qween: Wow you managed already to put the hair in nice ways! It's a great start already

Hmm from what I see the iris part of the eye is too big... The lids cover most of the iris on the photo no?

From what I see (probably very wrong) you've placed the cross well on which left-right direction the head is facing, but you didn't really take into account the slight tilt that he's looking down. The chin & brow indicate that he's looking rather to the side in your drawing but not slightly downward... At least not enough. But well, I don't know if you can fix it still at this stage

Well Idk, I'm not expert :D

EDIT: Wait that's Jaime Lannister??? I never watch GoT (only read it), IIRC that's him???

@ Qween - MmmMMmm Nikolaj Coster-Waldau  He's excellent as Jamie :) The portrait looks really good, but the mouth is a little off. If you follow the central axis of the face, which goes along the nose, you will be able to tell where the centre of the mouth should be as well. The angle at which the left cheek merges into the jawline is a little sharper in the reference photo. Keep up the great work :D

@ Shantia - Highlights!!!! Awesome :D
