@Tesh and now even more highlights!

I am starting to feel finished with the skin, I am not sure if I can do much else, I have improved alot on skin in this piece so i am really happy about that. Next is to practice hairs (it's gonna be the death of me). But now it's 4 am!! So I better go to bed.

@ Shantia - She looks lovely, and her skin tones are very well done :) Don't be afraid of hair :D Use a large brush, and draw in sections. Add single hairs only sparingly, mostly just to suggest the strands :)

@Tesh thank you so much! Without your help she would probably look like a really weirdo right now hehe. Thank you for the hair tip, I am planning to use her for many hairstyles, including the egyptian style one :)

I actually just planned to make a face fast to have something to paint the hair on, I ended up spending alot of time on her, but for me it was worth it!

And for the skintone I found a great guide (with pallette) on deviantart and then edited to get what I wanted.

We're at the same time zone, both drawings... Well I'm reassured. I'm supposed to be up in less than 3 hours whoops!

@Shantia Wow you really improved there! As for hair, you know I dig the Egyptian style :D But I also want to know how other styles look on her.

Spoiler

@Qween I don't watch GoT, but I have no problem seeing drawings of Coster-Waldau  What I mostly see off is what Ceru said, specially the chin angle. And of course what our resident expert Tesh said. I like the strokes you did for his hair, it really resembles the Jamie-ish style.

Thank you sooo much for the pointers guys!! I'll start working on these tips tonight! I also noticed when I take a picture of my stuff, I can see better what needs to be fixed from the photo...why is that?

And yeah I had to ask myself whoooo do I want to stare at intently for a few hours.....:D I read all the books too and he really is the perfect Jamie ;)

@ Shantia - OooOOoooo Now all you need is some jewelry, and she will look like an Egyptian goddess :D Glad I could help, but the thing I am most happy about is that you are having fun :)

@ Qween - Taking a photo of your drawing, and then noticing imperfections is very similar to placing it in front of a mirror, and seeing the drawing from a different angle. It's just something fresh for your eyes :) Use whatever methods work best for getting a fresh perspective. Looking forward to seeing your progress :) Did I mention that I looove Nikolaj? :P I touched his armour.... Aaaand, I sound like a pervert :P

@Tesh Yeah the jewlery gonna be hard, but really good practice so that is nice, and I am not really happy with this hair so I am gonna try a few more times and see what I get.

Instead of making completely new hair, I tried to salvage what I had already done. It looks better now? What do you think? (I'm asking everyone)

@ Shantia - Depends on what you are going for. The hair looks a little stiff and bristly - which would work for an Egyptian wig. But if you want the hair to look natural, then you need to use a larger brush. It will help you make the hair look softer.

@Tesh Ok, I will try that, would it work to just paint over what I already have?

It might, but I think you could get distracted. I'd start fresh. I am at work right now, so I cannot show you what I mean. But here is a good video showing the process of painting hair by Josh Galves. Notice how the artist uses large brushes to lay in the strands, while keeping the use of smaller brushes to a minimum:

@Tesh thank you, I will try it, it's just so hard with no pressure sensitivty.

I think Trust tablets are more popular than Wacom in Europe. Would something like the Wacom Bamboo ($100 US) be in your budget? It might be worth investing...

Otherwise, you are doing really well even without a graphic tablet. In fact, your work is amazing :) So, don't be discouraged :)

@Tesh I have one of the wacom tablets, it is probably a very cheap one, but I never liked using it, it was so hard. And I just bought a new SSD harddrive to be able to use this laptop that has touch screen, it's just the stupid drivers that don't work properly, I've googled on the issue but there doesn't seem to be any fix, Adobe hasnt been very helpful in fixing the issue. Have you used SAI? I wonder maybe the pressure sensitity will work in there, the problem is mostly in the adobe programs from what I have read.

And thank you so much! Very encouraging!

@ Shantia - I haven't used SAI, but I have used Painter, and that one is a great program for artists. I think you can download a free trial, so you can test it on your laptop. I have a touch screen Lenovo, but haven't really used it for painting. I might try and see whether I can figure out something with my drivers - maybe if I get it to work on my laptop, it can help you as well?

@Tesh is Painter as good as PS? My touch screen use the n-trig thignie, which the drivers don't work for. If it's n-trig in your touch screen and you get it to work then it can help, but if it isn't n-trig you don't haev to try :) And also thanks for your offer.

EDIT: Do you mean corel painter? I tried SAI and pressure sensitivity works fine there, but the interface kind of put me off.

I am also a bit new to PS and haven't learnt the program fully, I have looked for a way to calibrate the pen (screen area) in there but I haven't found any, do you know if there are any?

I found a picture of the problem that I get, they are supposed to be dots on the left and thne straight lines on the other but I get those weird L-shapes on the end.

I use SAI, the pressure sensitivity is amazing there too (Wacom tablet). In general it's a very good software that acknowledges the pressure sensitivity. But I got friends who say that if you're using pressure sensitivity more than 2000 something it might not get acknowledged. But tbh, I don't even think that sensitivity matters at that level...

What's the adobe program you're using? Illustrator or Photoshop?

I have Wacom & I calibrate my pen for each painting software (SAI & CS5 & FireAlpaca) on the Wacom interface, not on the software.

And wow the hair's so lush :D

@ Shantia - Yep, Corel Painter can pretty much blow PS out of the water - if you can get used to it. Which I didn't. I mean, I am fine with it, but somehow PS grew on me, and I never really got into Painter. That being said, Painter is significantly cheaper than PS...

I never calibrated my pen... O_o Works just fine, though... No lag, no nothing.

Not sure if my Laptop is based on N-trig. It's fairly new, though, so it might be. If I can figure out what sort of stylus would work with my computer, I might order one.

Give Corel Painter a shot. It is the closest thing to natural media on a computer :) You might really like it, and then your pressure sensitivity issues will be dealt with :)

@Tesh installing the trial now, I hope it will work, if not I will try to get used to SAI :)

@Ceru thank you and I use photoshop.

Edit: painter won't even start, it start loading and then nothing, I see it in my processes but nothing happens. :'(

Edit 2: Seems to be a problem with ne update of NET. framework so gonna uninstall that, and hopefully it will work.

Painter is working, but OMG feels like it won't be easy to learn, so I dusted off my super old wacom tablet, maybe it is time to learn how to use it, I had it all these yearts and rarely touched it. So I will try to use both my laptop and my desktop. My desktop has a 27" monitor so that will be really nice.

You're trying Corel Painter? Please keep us updated on how it's going. I'm still sticking to my SAI & PS for the time being, no use trying other one since I already invested in SAI. But I still would like to know how other softwares are.

Say, do you guys actually use so many brushes on digital? The only two brushes I ever use for all drawings I'd done up to now are rounded soft edges & rounder hard edge... I'm just wondering whether anyone actually ever use other kind of brushes.

(and maybe it's time to know what the heck is airbrushing :D )
