@ Shantia - Well then :) Wacom tablet :) It is counter-intuitive to begin with, but then you get used to it. Took me about a day or so. Hope it won't be too much trouble for you either :)

@ Ceru - Apparently Open Canvas is also really good, and it;s very reasonably priced.

Hmmm... Maybe I should give Painter another try :D

I mostly use hard edged brush, and then spatter brush for skin details, like you can see on this one the freckles and then around the highlights.nBYiDEu.png

@Tesh Yeah the tablet wasn't very good for me, I had to press super hard and my wrist hurt after like 10-15 mins, I fell of a playthingie as a kid and landed in a bad way that my wrist took all the damage (weight) and it seems like they are a bit weak, I notice it alot during bowling too.

So I will probably try to learn Painter, although I just started to get comfortable with PS heheh.

Normally you can adjust the pressure level of the tablet to soft or hard no? I mean whether you need to push very hard or whether a light touch suffice

@Ceru no idea, it is very old and probably one of their cheapest, I bought it on a sale for like $10 or something like that, so not sure if it has many options.

@ Shantia - Hmm... My brush strokes are veeeery light. I hardly have to press down, so it's easy on my wrist. But I have no injuries... Hope your experiment with Painter is going to be fun :) I'll download the trial once I'll get home, and start working on Timebean's drawing in Painter. So, in this case, not only the approach to colouring will be new, but the software will be different from what I usually employ. Who knows, maybe I'll end up ditching PS? Or maybe, I'll start using both (as I did a long time ago).

@ Ceru - Ooops, forgot about your brush question. I stick to the hard round brush for most of the painting process. Then I have chalk brushes that I use for texturing (I have a LOT of those). I also use speckled brushes for hair and for freckles. I know it's counter-intuitive to use them for such widely different things, but you just have to fiddle with the settings :) There are three things I avoid in PS: smudge tool, burn tool, and soft-edged brushes.

And here's the basic sketch for Timebean's drawing:

Aaaand, colour scheme is the third one:

@Tesh I love that sketch, can't wait to see progress, and good luck with Painter, I think I will go take a shower and then try it out a bit more, I just opened it to see if pressure sensetivity worked, and it did :D

@Tesh: Ooooh! Timebean's illustration looking good. Can't wait to see it coloured :D

How's hubby portrait going?

@Shantia: did you try to adjust on Wacom or directly on Painter?

@Ceru I didn't try to adjust it, and I will try to use Painter more and then I won't need the wacom tablet, the pressure sensitivity works in there with my touch screen :D

@Shantia So beautiful!! <3 Hair is going well from what I can see on my tablet.

@Tesh that sketch looks very good! I see something weird with her neck, but it's probably that I'm tired and on my tablet. I will be watching the colour scheme like this O.O

And where is Qween? I needz moar Nicolaj.

@ Vor - Oh, there's plenty wrong with the sketch :) But that's just how I paint - I start off with very loose lines, and am not too bothered by things being off. I tighten things up as I lay in the details :)

@ Shantia - Glad you are having fun with Painter :D I got the demo too, but promptly uninstalled it. I just couldn't be bothered to learn the shortcuts for the program, or reconfigure it to have the same shortcuts as in PS :P

I blocked in some colours, but I am still getting a feel for the drawing. Right now, things are very fluid, and they are bound to change quite a bit. I think the scene should be darker :)

I finally have a few sketches to post!  :D

Here is Cullen:

And Calpernia (based on this concept art):

She totally looks like Madonna in her artwork. Or a supermodel!

@ procutemeister - Calpernia looks awesome :) Great concept, and you reproduced it really well, especially the frontal portrait :) The profile - her body is a little skinny, and I would make the back of the head just a bit larger. Bur her nose is glorious :D As for Cullen... He's dreamy

@Tesh Oooh sorry, I thought those were the finished lines (I need to update my concept of "sketch" ) I really like the soft light falling on the characters, and you seem to be doing fine with the color scheme. Are you comfortable using it?

@proutemeister Goodness, that frontal portrait of Calpernia is glorious. Also like the profile, with the adjustments Tesh mentioned. I romanced Cullen twice, so I guess I should make a pin with your sketch and hand it out to my PCs :D

Thanks so much guys!  :D I'm planning to color Cullen soon. And find my eraser, so I can fix stuff like what Teshayel said. It's been gone for too long.  :(

@Tesh That looks gorgeous, if the scene is a bit darker I think the colours will look lovely, well they already are, but even more lovely :D

Yes painter was great fun to try all the brushes, but when I was going to actually paint on somethign it was almost a bit overwhelming I had no idea where to start, and yeah, my laptop monitor I can turn around so I actually dont use my keyboard only the pen and I didn't find any good way to go back to previous steps, I love that in PS I always have that window open there.

I did see on my desktop computer now that I had a program called Bamboo preferances (I don't even have the bamboo), so I made the pen more soft and now it seems alot better so I will try again to do hair with it and hopefully my wrist won't hurt this time :)

@Procutemeister WOW, I love them all but that Calpernia frontal portrait, just wow, it looks so good. I think Calpernia is one of the best looking characters in game, she could be a supermodel (imo).

@Shantia: In fact, many are very beautiful. Cass & Vivienne for example...

@Ceru they certainly are, I don't really think any of them look bad, but I guess Calpernia has that look that I really like. (Didn't mean it to sound I think everyone else is ugly becasue I really don't, sorry)

Seconded :) Vivienne is absolutely gorgeous! I know that some people don't like her without her magic hat, but I really love the fact that her hair is short. I cannot see her rocking an afro, but I wouldn't like her having a hair style that does not match her ethnicity (a.k.a. a weave...).

Actually her magic hat is rather magical... First time I saw her pic, it was a thumbnail & I was thinking of Qunari until... "Wait, that's a beautiful human woman there!" I like her hat however... But it's rather blah in term of defense <_< & I use no helmet...

Actually we need to draw all the DA characters wearing silly hat & yellow plaidweaves for Fashion Weekes you know...

@Cerulione I think I might scan it and colour her digitally.  :) Thanks so much!

Also Vivienne does look amazing with or without her magic horned hat. I just loved that hat so much I re-enabled helmets for it.  I also happen to be the kind of player who doesn't sacrifice style over stats. I'm quite picky over my characters' outfits.

I expected Vivienne to have a fancy-looking hairdo, I guess, because she dressed fancy. But the close shave she has really suits her--it's practical and makes a statement as well.

@Pro: Can't wait the coloured version of Cal ;)

Nah, Vivienne's haircut amazes me. Like you, I expected elaborate style but really short clean cut like hers is finally a fashion statement on her own. And guess what, I tried to make Viv wears ugly yellow pleadweaves and she's the only one who actually manages to look really good in it...
