@Tesh Oooh sorry, I thought those were the finished lines (I need to update my concept of "sketch" ) I really like the soft light falling on the characters, and you seem to be doing fine with the color scheme. Are you comfortable using it?

*snip*

Whoops, missed this :)

A lot of people have a finished line drawing before they lay in the colours, but I never approach a painting that way digitally. When I want to paint something in natural media, however, a lot of planning goes into the composition, and the base sketch is quite detailed.

And, no, I am not comfortable with the colour scheme  I think I am going to have to start from scratch. I am not sure why I don't like it - because it's a new approach for me, or because there is something wrong with it. The thing is, I am used to taking a colour in vacuum, but colours change depending on what other colours surround them. I guess I just have to wrap my head around that concept. *shakes fist at grad school* Why did I spend my time in a lab, rather than taking colour theory classes? :P

@Tesh That's interesting, I tend to think of drawing digitally as the same as traditional media only with a tablet, but they are very different media so it makes sense to approach pieces differently. I guess even among traditional media, approaches differ. I never thought of these things before!

I'm sorry you're not comfortable with the colour scheme :( It looks good to me but it's you who has to be happy with the result. I guess it also takes some time getting used to it; yet another thing I never thought of, colour perception changes according to surrounding colours. Colour theory as mandatory subject nao! :D

Re: Vivienne I also love her looks. She's gorgeous and so stylish: the bolder I make her outfits, the better they look on her. I also love her hats: many people think they're a copy of Maleficent's, but hennin, the name it's given ingame, it's in fact the name for hats in those shape that became fashionable in the 15th century. I always had a fascination for that kind of medieval hats and they look great on Vivienne.

Actually we need to draw all the DA characters wearing silly hat & yellow plaidweaves for Fashion Weekes you know...

How about we make Beginners Group Fashion Weekes? We can pick up a character and make a drawing with a fashion we want, or pick up a fashion style and draw one character according to it. It may be Fashion Month, so everyone has time enough to do their drawings.

Just doodling around with colours. I think I like this combination better, but I am not sure if it would work for Timebean's painting. Ah, well :) Good to experiment anyway :)

@Tesh All the blue really affects the red intensity, can't say if I like it or not... still doodling around is fun! I love to take out the colours and just make forms and colour combinations.

@Ceru yay! Would you prefer focusing on a character or a style?

And the rest of the group? I'm looking forward to hearing your opinions!

@ al - OooOOooo Loooooooove it so far :) Don't worry about the ear. You have to pay close attention to actually notice it. You've done a really great job building the figure up. The only recommendation I would have is to hold back on doing all the details before drawing in the major lines of your figure (i.e. armour, clothing, etc.). It might help avoid "Aw, dang!" moments :)

Excellent work! Looking forward to seeing the progress you'll make :)

Thanks! :D
Yea, I have to hold myself not to dive into the details too soon.

I have a question: how do you choose the colour scheme for your painting? What do you take into consideration?

I have no idea where I am going with this... but I am having a lot of fun playing with his armour.

EDIT: Beginners Group Fashion Weekes sounds fun! :wizard:

TBH IDK... But I have idea of Cullen in Plaidweaves... :D

Basically make him change that purple surcoat of him into Plaidweaves... But since I already got TONS of things to finish (like the Pocket Quizzies) it'll not be a very complicated things though...

@Ceru poor Cullen, so sweet and you pay him with plaidweave :D I want to do the colour version of Ghilan'nain and also I have to start a DIY gift for my niece, so don't worry, my drawing won't be too complicated either. The main point is having fun!

@alschemid Your Cullen is looking good! (Left foot a bit big perhaps) I wish his armour in game was more similar to this... I want to see dat warrior body! The lion coat is very cool but a bit... ahem, baggy.

When choosing colour I go with my gut, but Ceru recommended using as reference paintings you like; and Tesh the gamut masking method, you can see it on the tips thread (Tesh is not very happy with it though :o) For my next painting, I'll be using as reference a piece of Alfonse Mucha for colours (because I'm modest like that :D)

Fashion week, eh? I think it's a grand idea, but I will probably have to sit it out for the next month or two - I have too much on my plate :P But I will be happy to help with suggestions on your WIPs :)

@ Al - Whenever I choose colours for a painting, I take a look at the colour wheel, and pick opposites or a triad (basically, an equilateral triangle inside the wheel, and the points are my main colours). I generally use quite a few references, however, and often colour pick - which is a BIG NO-NO :P That's the reason why right now, I am trying to follow James Gurney's gamut masking technique. You take a Yurmby colour wheel, and only use a limited palette from it. You can find some more details on his technique in the last couple of pages of the Tips thread :)

Glad you're having fun with the armour, just make sure to keep the 3/4 view consistent throughout the body :) Cullen's looking dashing :D

Okay I don't even know who I'm drawing anymore, but I don't think it's Nikolaj! :D maybe he's that guy from the Heineken commercial?! Or cullen with a crooked shnoze?
Didn't get that far along but I drew upside down tonight...blood's rushing to my head :P

Oh and fashion week sounds aaawesome! I've wanted to try an appropriate halamshiral ball gown for a while...something epically huge and Cinderella....all the better to hide the daggers in the garter belt ;)

@ Qween - There are only a few things that are off, and you might be able to make adjustments :) I tried to draw over your image to illustrate where you would need to change things, and then lost the file... Which is probably a good thing - I love to help people, but sometimes my methods appear as if I am trying to show off :P

1. Have a look at the flipped image (you can hold the drawing in front of a mirror to observe it), and ask yourself what you don't like about it. Are there any lines that appear out of place to you? Do any areas stand out that you want to change? That's how you begin :)

Spoiler

2. This might not be helpful for a drawing where you have already started shading, but you might still be able to gently trace guidelines. Yep. Guidelines are a life saver :D Use them! Ideally, when you just start your rough sketch :)

Spoiler

I nudged things around in PS, to show where things are a bit off. You might be able to erase some lines, and make some corrections, if you feel up to it :)

Spoiler

Finally - Nikolaj is such a yummy model :D I'll have to draw him as well at some point. But first I have to finish three drawings that I promised for other ppl :)

Have fun! You are doing very well :)

@ Tesh You're AMAZING!! I would never ever say you're showing off, just an awesome tutor ;) thank you so much for taking the time to illustrate this for me, the guidelines are going to be super helpful and I'm definitely up for it. I figured since I'd already erased mine it'd be pointless to redraw them  I have much to learn ;)

@ Kaibe - Do you want character design process?

Xia Taptara's Scarlet Witch videos are great:

Portraits, Diane Ozdamar's Hanagomuri series is really great for that, even though it's a bit old:

@ Qween - Glad I could help :) The most important thing is for you to have fun drawing :)

Dawnstone will be represented in his pink scarf 8)

Edit: I uploaded the final version in the Fashion Weekes thread! It's a real quickie, simple lines and no shading.

Soooo... this is what happens when you have a long incubation time, and discover that your lab has a Wcom Graphire... Laptop screen is too small to get things right, so I will have to finish this at home, but I had fun with the colours :) Inspired by my Charlie :)

@Tesh D'aaaaww so so cute. He has that "are you planning NOT to give me any of that delicious-smelling food?" look. I like the purple hues in contrast with the green and blue of the eyes :)

Yes, he is a little beggar :P Waking me up at 7 am sharp every morning. So far I have been unsuccessful at teaching him the concept of a weekend and sleeping in :P

I worked on an alternate palette for Timebean's drawing, and I am much more comfortable with this one. I have to hear back from her on her preference, but here's to hoping she will find this one pleasing.
