Yes, he is a little beggar :P Waking me up at 7 am sharp every morning. So far I have been unsuccessful at teaching him the concept of a weekend and sleeping in :P

I hear you. My three furry daughters wake me up... and then they go to sleep  <_<

Colours are looking better now, they give me a relaxing mood and the red and blonde hair colours are a nice contrast.

Is it ok that I want to cuddle him? Yes, yes it is ^^

May I ask how did you got the different nuances of white in his hair?

FURBALL!!! *wanna wanna wanna*

:P

Hmm the white's not all white no? It's all nuances of purple actually...

@ Vor - Ceru is right :) I actually don't have pure white anywhere. You have to remember that colours will appear differently, depending on what other colours surround them. In this case, his fur is mostly violets and purples, with a touch of blue here and there :) What appears as white, is very light violet, yellow, and blue.

@Ceru & Tes Oooh I see, as I saw a white circle on the right, I thought maybe you had used different opacities or something like that and they seemed purple because of the surrounding colour. Thanks for explaining! :)

If I get it correctly... every white object's never really white, not entirely I mean, it's always a light shade of all colours that surrounds it? (Greyish if the surrounding if grey, bluish if it's blue?)

Well I tried to advance portrait drawing of Del... and it's... :crying:

Spoiler

I think that the best is just to finish this somehow and move on to next portrait. There are already too many mistakes there :?

@Ceru it doesn't look bad! To me it just looks like she's dark-skinned, I think you could fix it with more highlights? If you're not feeling comfortable with it perhaps it's better you move on, but I don't think it looks bad at all.

Ceru, the only thing that is off is the eyes. They are spheres, and will have shadows on the upper half coming from the upper lid. So the iris will also have shadows and highlights on it.

Also, if her skin tone is supposed to be darker, she still needs some stronger highlights. Have a careful look at the shadows and highlights on the photo below (one of the sexiest men on the planet, imho):

Don't give up! You are doing very well :)

Thanks everyone, sometimes my head begs to be banged on the wall <_<

Actually Del is quite... olive skinned? Her skin is not really pale white like Cullen's but not dark either. I'll try to squeeze R2s for more decent headshots... And you're right about her eyes Tesh, I'll have to do it. I just thought that I'll do it last with colour.

Spoiler

Trying to sketch outside last Saturday... :bandit:

Spoiler

Moral of the day:

1. Learn perspective

2. Learn perspective

3. Learn how to do landscape

4. Check weather forecast

5. It is impossible to have clothing too warm for sketching outside on March... Wear for -50°C!

Don't do this before May, everyone. It's hellishly cold...

Is that ... Notre-Dame de Fourvière? If it is not, it really looks like :)

@ Ceru - The important thing is that you got out, and studied your surroundings :) That is a really good sketch, to begin with. Perspective is hard, but it becomes much easier if you set down guidelines that lead to your vanishing point. With time and practice, you will no longer need those lines - especially when sketching :)

@Ceru I admire you, I'm too self-conscious to sketch outside. And I thank you for your advice on the weather  Even if I tried, it's been so windy the last months I'd need to bring along a bag full of stones... or be the first woman to practice the flying sketch!

@Morlanwen: yup, Place Bellecour at Lyon with Notre Dame de Fourvière on the hill as background. Well if anyone can actually recognize it...

@Tesh: Ah yeah, the lines!!! I forgot that completely, whoops... Thanks for the suggestion

@Vor: ...that's why it's a good idea to go when it's so cold outside, not so many people are walking around. Everyone's either at home or inside a café

I think that in Summer it'll be more trying with all the people... Maybe with smaller book it's less noticable? A5 probably?

Or just try sketching while flying B)

EDIT: when do you guys actually go out sketching? Which season?

EDIT2:

@ Ceru - I rarely go out to sketch. I know, I'm terrible, but there's just too much stuff to do when being outside. Especially with the short summers we have up here in Canuckland :P

So, Del is olive skinned? Then you managed to get the darker tones properly, but you still need more highlights. As a reference, have a look at pictures of olive skinned actresses. Maybe Indira Varma or Lisa Ray? Or Middle Eastern and Indian actresses - good luck finding a picture without a ton of makeup, though :P

@Tesh: good idea I'll look for it. The thing is, Del is actually olive-skinned with blonde hair. That's a rather weird things but when I shade it everything just looks really weird actually.

anyway...

@Ceru I'm sure it will look great after the final touches! As you say, dark skin and light hair usally make a weird impression.

I've done a little research and nope, sketching while flying doesn't look comfortable.

Spoiler

I started colouring Ghilan'nain, still building up colours. I couldn't for the life of me get a hue of purple similar to Mucha's illustration, so I think the next layer over the mask will be a washed dark blue, to give it a darker and more dramatic colour. I'm not sure it was the best time to change brushes, but last week I bought red sable brushes in sizes 2, 4 and 8 (the ones I use the most, my drawings are usually quite small) Jeez, the difference! They hold so much water, I can even make a bit of mixing on the palette. And the colour looks so much better, the dry and grainy look of the Tiger brushes is completely gone. I'm still getting used to them, the water+pigment flow is much quicker and difficult to control, but I think I'll be enjoying painting much more.

@Vor: MARRY POPPINS! THat's very cute :D

How about gouache? Someone told me that gouache is also water-soluble so maybe combine them...?

I'm going to strangle Del one of this day...

Thank you, girls!! I'm glad you like my Mary Drawings :D

@Ceru Gouache, I never thought about it! For Ghilan'nain I want to use mainly watercolours; but I read on a book about watercolours that for strong highlights it's better to use more opaque pigments. I was thinking about using white tempera for the highlights on metal; now you mention it, gouache may be a good option too. I'll try them both on a colour test and let you know the results. Thank you for your suggestion!

I'm not sure what a gouache really like though, never really saw it or works with it.

Nah, I'm doing a series of image + text for Tumblr, too many anon hates lately on the fandom for no reason. What do you guys think?

I don't really know what to write for the victim or to anyone who witness.

Ceru, have you had this problem, or are you doing it for someone else? To tell you the truth, I am not sure what can be done. I've never had to deal with anything of the sort, not even as a kid.

These message cards look great, though. I hope they will help :)

Not me personally, but just this evening someone I follow on Tumblr fell victim to this. There are too many already, at least 10 different people since 2 weeks ago, each time a message that hit the weakest spot. Even if these signs might not stop the hates but my goal is to raise people's awareness, because when that happens what often can help is when everyone else just show support. Don't close your eyes when you see it happens to others, do something. It's very very very important.

Bullying can kill people. It can destroy someone entirely. Trust me I know this personally

It is really kind of you to show support this way. I am sure that people will appreciate it. I suppose I have been very fortunate not to have to deal with this sort of harassment, but I know that a kind word or gesture can go a long way :)
