Hi, I was studying face anatomy and ended up doodling this. I have posted it on tumblr and Cerulione asked me if it is pencil on paper, since I have no idea how to answer questions there am I answering here... so no it is digital, I am using MyPaint some pencil brushes (Deevad4) I have downloaded and the paper is a background that comes with the software.

Edit: It doesn't allow me to post the image here... only the link. <_<

Totally looks like natural media :) Great work! Mmmm... Cullen....

So, I managed to get the full image for ya (alschemid's Tumblr). Cause, you know... we have to have Cullen in his full glory here :D Hope you don't mind :)

Wow it totally looks like traditional media! Amazing work, alschemid. You may practice anatomy with Cullen and show us anytime <3

Thanks @Teshayel for posting it, I don't know if it was a tumblr thing or BSN.

You can see it is digital by the pixelation of his scar, the doodle is too small to add that much detail, and the repeating background pattern.

You may practice anatomy with Cullen and show us anytime <3

That is my intention to study anatomy and keep me motivated at the same time, however I am not sure you would like to see the skulls and muscles studies, they don't look that hot!

Since this is an artist group I would like to share my building lines for that doodling, the red lines for the structure of the head, which I messed up a bit, and blue for the features, I had to move the nose and mouth to the right to fix my messing up.

That is horror, anatomy study. I tried to draw R2s' Del Lavellan a while back & it was the first thing I ever tried to make the 3D look. Since I couldn't understand where the face planes are supposed to be (even while looking at tutorial books) I tried to draw her skeleton first & ignore the muscles (since I got her screenshot reference with neutral expression). The result was something that looks like badly made halloween decoration. R2s wanted to see it but I'll spare her the horror.

I really love how you made your head construction, especially the nose. Whew, nose is very very difficult for me to draw since even after trying many time on paper & charcoal I don't manage to get all the planes covered yet. I haven't begin the ears yet so it's rather... basta for now.

Do you learn anatomy by yourself?

I tend to prefer people with a little bit of skin on them :D If you want to share skulls and muscles studies however, please do it! I find it very interesting that you shared the building lines for Cullen. Unfortunately, not everything in the artist life is looking at handsome models :P

I saw a video of someone doing a photoshop painting... 90% of time that painting doesn't look pretty at all until the very end. I guess that it's a part of the game.

@ Al - Please feel free to share all your studies :) If they are nudes, just put them in spoiler tags, and add a little NSFW warning. As for things that might be a bit disturbing for some people, the way you posted your Cullen study is excellent :)

I love to see construction lines, and yours are particularly well done. I like to start my drawings off like that whenever I use natural media - because there is no Undo or Liquify or Warp in real life :P

Great work, Al! Keep 'em coming :)

Just a question: is it preferrable to keep 2 light sources (one primary from three-quarter), and the second one a bit weaker from another side?) or can I just zapped one?

my Cullen drawing has him looking to the side of where the primary source comes from but the reference have two.

Ceru, it depends on how closely you want to stick to your reference. If you want to reproduce it perfectly, then keep both light sources. If you just want to draw Cullen, and a single light source is easier for you to handle, then do that :)

Whatever feels right to you :) I am sure it will turn out great.

I'm afraid I can't help you, Ceru, we'll have to wait for Tesh.

A while ago I started copying a drawing from a book on vintage fashion I have (yeah, it's and old fixation of mine); today I decided to finish it and use it for watercolour + colour pencil practice.

Edit: Sorry, my tablet decided to post before I was finished.

I'm not sure actually. TBH I don't think that blindly following the screenshot is a good idea, especially on greyscale one. The reference is great because of the colour, having the second lightsource allow having a good part of Cullen's face well illuminated on the warm orange glow of the fire to the contrast of the dark blue background (I love Orange-Blue palette).

The question is whether I'll be able to shade correctly it without following the screenshot with my current skill level. Hmm.

Any opinion is welcomed

aaaargh!

Spoiler

@Vor: The colouring is neat :)

Ceru, to keep things simple, I would go with a single light source. You can add a second one once you are comfortable with an extra layer of complexity to your drawings :)

Edit:

Vor, those watercolours look great :) This is excellent practice for you :) Glad you're having fun!

Like Tesh said, I think it depends on what you're more comfortable with and how you want the drawing to look like. Perhaps if you like the look with the second light source it's better to go for it?

What do you want to do? I mean that's a sketch you want to make into a full drawing if I get it right? Do you want to draw both of them on the same drawings or separately?

@ One4 - That looks promising, but you'll have to elaborate a little on your idea, just as Ceru pointed out. Would you like to draw an image of your Quizzy getting ready for more adventuring, with Cullen worried in the background? :)

Update for Timebean's drawing:

I'm torn between going the him being worried while she heads out on an adventure versus him being amused by her sassing someone semi-important to the Inquisition. She's more of the go-out-and-do-stuff, not the sit-here-and-be-polite-to-valuable-jerks type of person.

I think both ideas are good, but I like the second one a bit more. Maybe because my own Quizzy likes to sass people :)

I second the sassing idea  :wizard:

Edit: Tesh, I love that drawing of yours, the scene is so peaceful. How did you achieve the contrast of light, by making colours on her darker and lighter on him?

Tish's Zhenya, finished the lineart at lunch. Now I really want to paint her instead of just doing simple colouring like Seb's... Arfff...

PS layers :D Sometimes I actually use them... :P I had one layer filled with a dark blue gradient, and the other with a light orange gradient, both set diagonally across the drawing. The former I set to Multiply to darken whatever was beneath it, the latter I set to Soft Light to lighten everything beneath it. I then erased the parts I did not need. And, because I prefer to work on one layer, I merged everything down.

Ceru, she looks beautiful! And tough :D Can't wait to see the colours on this one :)
