Progress on Izzy in Assassin's Creed
I am learning quite a bit with this. The only thing that is not happening is me drawing faster... How did Jean Giraud get to be so fast??? In case you do not know him, he did the amazing artwork for Jodorowsky's Dune. Yes, I am a BIG Dune fan
I am re-reading the books right now ![]()

Ok, done with drawing for today. My butt has gone all flat from all the sitting I did today
Tried to deepen the shadows, vary the colours, and block in the base for the stubble. It's fuzzy because I haven't done any blending yet.
Fingers crossed I won't screw this up O_0

@ Tesh: Izzy and your hubby are looking great! The portrait particularly is looking really good now.
@Vor: Flemeth looks cool, can't wait to see the finished one!
Thanks so much for the positive feedback guys! You are all too kind

So here is the full picture (NSFW!)
@Ceru: hihihi thanks
The CC is a bit hard to work with for creating Asian faces but in case you'd like to see, here are some screenshots of her from different angles (I'm sorry, I don't have her sliders though
)
The guidelines I followed for making Haruka was to keep her face a bit softer-looking, since bone structures in Asian faces tend to be less pronounced. (In fact I think I made her cheekbones too pronounced
) Because of this, Asian noses also tend to be smaller and less pointy than Caucasian noses. I also used the eye shape that was a bit slanted (the second one I think) and made it narrower. Sadly, there isn't an option to make characters have monolids in the CC. I would have used that. ![]()
Also, not to perpetuate the stereotype but East Asians like Korean, Chinese, and Japanese tend to have yellowish skin tones so for Haruka I used one of the yellow-based skin tones.
Anyway sorry if this got a bit long, I hope it helps (even a little)... Your marker drawing is looking good! I have no idea of French but I read the English version of Little Prince, such a charming book ![]()

Wow Tesh, you're doing such a nice job on both drawings! I really like how Izzy's clothes are looking; and your hubby's portrait is so lively now with deeper shadows, also he's looking manlier so I guess he's happy ![]()
@Pro I love love your Quizzy's drawing; maybe the leg is a bit big, but in general it looks very nice, and that's a difficult pose! She looks very good in game, and I confirm that it's very difficult to make Asian looking characters in the CC, specially because it's nearly impossible to make small eyes that look good and not making the cheekbones pronounced. I spent quite some time until I was somewhat happy with Ahyoka, and even so I think the eyes are a bit too big. But making small eyes for elves is completely impossible, Ahyoka's are as small as they get without looking deformed.
Edit to add: Pro, you can see the finished Flemeth drawing in the gallery thread ![]()

@ Vor - Thank you
Glad you like the progress so far. Yes, my hubby is happier with the way things look right now. My mom was funny, however. She's like: "He's not that handsome!"
Well, I drew him as I see him ![]()
Progress on Timebean's drawing. Worked on Ser Gilmore's armour. The scale on his arm needs more work, and the fur lining has to be added, but the breastplate is basically done.

@Tesh: Hohoho can't wait what it'll be when finished, seriously I need to make a new "kiss" list with Pro's Haruka & Tesh's Seb ![]()
@Pro: well, you got it all correct (I'm of Chinese origin so I know), the thing is not all East Asian people have monolids though,( I don't) but the brow is always not pronounced, the nose less angular like you said. But the jaws can always be as square as everywhere I guess. Well i'll try to make an asian quizzy next time ![]()
Whelps, I quick draw Seb & failed the edge lighting... I really waxnt to do edge lighting but there's errors so well... this is with marker so can't really correct it. Which version do you prefer? My camera is giving me random results...
Version 1
Version 2:

I like Version 2 better. You need to deepen the shadows, but the light areas are good
Happy Seb week! ![]()
You know what's funny? Most of my friends are Chinese... Seriously, while I was still in grad school, there was a group of about six of us that hung out a lot (did movie nights, cooked, played board games, went out, etc.), and I was the only Caucasian... My friends were laughing at me, saying that I was the honorary Asian of the group
Even now that I moved all the way across the country, my closest friend here is also Chinese... I guess there is something shared in the mentality
It's a wonder I did not marry my high school sweetheart, who was also Chinese O_0

Ach, I preferred the first one a little bit more but I can't decide. The thing is I can't make the shadow deeper since the paper's on its limit already. I drew this on my moleskine (100 gsm, actually it's not intended for markers...) by doing many layers of light colour. I don't have special marker book since well... I don't know I'll need any special books & several people on Tumblr (mortinfamiart & a few other marker artists) are doing their marker drawing on normal 100 gsm paper.
Nah Tesh, highschool sweetheart's already not very cliché (okay, half of my asian classmates back in highschool married each other). More cliché is marrying childhood sweetheart (like, from gradeschool or before) or your parents try to set you up with the son of their best friend... (bwahahaha my Dad tried, I knew his motive when he kept inviting his best friend's son home for dinner & keep asking me why don't I see this movie with this guy or things like that). Dad doesn't want to admit but my Mom told me all these while laughing to death. ![]()
When I started to date my current BF (100% Frenchy French) he was rather... "But you only knew this guy for a year!!!" ![]()

@Tesh you have a gift for gorgeous eyes!
It's funny that here in Spain there are lots of Chinese people (lots of Chinese shops and restaurants) but they mostly keep to themselves. I guess they mix more now that younger generations are going to Spanish schools, but I didn't have any Chinese colleagues when going to high school or even college. 'Tis a shame, I like meeting people from all around the world

I agree with Vor, Tesh got a thing with the eyes... Oh the window of the soul... Idk if it's true, if an eye can tell more than the whole expressions of the face...
Sometimes the older generation (I mean my parents & up) are used to live in a closed-knit community already. Guess that it's that birds of the same feather flock together thing.

Ceru, if the paper can't hold more shadow, then I guess it'll have to be Version 1
Either way, impressive progress ![]()

@Ceru: Ahahaha thanks! I know that not all Asians have monolids (although I have a monolid on one eye. just one
) but it's something I wanted to use for Haruka in particular. And also, Sebastian is looking good! Great job with the markers. I personally prefer the second one if the shadows could be made darker but either way, it looks great. I also like the more gradient effect that it has, as opposed to cel shading. ![]()
I think to make shadows darker without putting so much ink on the paper is to use darker shades of the same color instead of layering over it with the same marker.
Where I'm from, there are a LOT of Chinese (most people, including myself, are either pure Chinese or part Chinese) and it's relatively few families that still insist that their children only marry into other Chinese families. The community used to be tight-knit, but that was several generations ago.

Actually what's the reason you guys choose the second one? Just curious ![]()
I'm fiddling with Photoshop to see whether I can do something with the contrast or not.

I chose Version 2 because the light areas are done very well. They are far too dark (imo) in Version 1. So, while V2 looks unfinished, the shadows can be deepened easily. Highlights cannot be increased in V1, however. Markers work a bit like watercolour - you have to be careful about darkening areas, because there really is no going back. Unless you use a different method to create highlights.

@Vor HAHAHHAHAHAHAHA omg, that is soo funny I love it.
And an update, I finally got that d*** pressure sensitivity to work, it was another driver that I had that was old, I never gave up on getting it to work, I can be so stubborn, so now I feel so motivated to start practicing again.
And a question for those who use pressure sensitivity do you use ir for both the size and the opacity?

Posté 07 avril 2015 - 12:50
Which software again...? I used the one for size in Photoshop CS6... Always draw with very low opacity though... (less than 10%)
