@Teshayel - OMG, I did what you suggested and used more colour when I continued with the shading, and holy **** what a difference. It was scary at first, but wow it really gave results.

Edit: This is where I am at now, not sure I can do anything better, this is still alot better than I ever thought I could do.

I am so glad you had fun experimenting :D And the results are amazing :D A little bold colour makes everything pop :)

Can't wait to see the final version :)

Well, one thing that I would suggest to give the portrait a bit of oomph is to give him a naughty little smile :) You can use the liquify tool in PS to adjust his mouth and eyes towards that effect :)

@Teshayel hahah yes, I was just thinking of how unhappy he looks.

I wasn't able to make a smile, it all looked so bad heheh. I played a bit with highlights and shading. I'ts not perfect but I am pretty happy with it. I had already done alot better here(1st pic) than I thought I would, so I improved ALOT when doing this one.

Thank you for all help, I might go back in and edit more at some time. Next I think I will do Solas, because he doesnt have hair, just have to get that perfect shine on his head :P

Another sketch of Cullen with Loomis' method for front view, I'm trying to do the shading now. Sorry for the image quality, it was drawn at the back of waste paper.

Some critics & comments I can gather so far:

- eyebrow: Cullen's eyebrows are thinner & went down at the end

- left and right ears size

- left & right eyes not the same shape (different style & shape)

You are improving so much :D

There are a few things that I'd adjust, but it would be easier for me if I'd draw over the portrait. May I do so?

Sure, please do

It's Proko's videos that do the work actually, he summarize real well about drawing heads & shading. Shading still need much adjustment, I can't do justice to Cullen's cheekbone.

Oki, then :) I am about to go to bed now, but I'll try to get the suggestions done tomorrow after work :)

Don't worry about the shading for now. That will become intuitive once you become comfortable with laying out the overall shapes of your subject :)

So, I just added a few tips that might help you visualize individual features easily :) I couldn't bring myself to draw over your portrait - he's just too cute :) Let me know if you have any questions :)

Okay baseline!!! First time I've sketched in over a decade!!! Bah!! And the first time I've shared anything I've done with other people...writing or otherwise

For being so delicious, his lips are simply impossible!!...but I think that's the least of it :D

Edit: oh and I actually had to end up using my galaxy note 2 and the autodesk sketchpad. I feel I'll have finer control with real pencils and paper but I wanted to get my fingers flowing asap!

Thank you for sharing :D

What medium did you use?

So, you definitely got an eye for proportions - Cullen's face is a bit squarish :) You might struggle less with the lips (or any feature for that matter) if you try a more structured approach, i.e.  you define a basic unit of measurement to get the proportions correctly and build the portrait from basic shapes.

Cerulione has made some amazing progress by following Proko's videos (posted in our Tips Thread), and you might find that approach equally helpful :)

Can't wait to see more :)

Thanks, Tesh. I'll definitely check out that video. Decided to try a baseline armor too, before any tutorials to see where I'm at. Plus I just really wanted to swiggle his fur...

Thanks for the pointers, its so refreshing to be drawing again!

Worked a bit more on Cullen's portrait. Did mostly some blending, and detailed the hair. I'll have to adjust his neck, smooth out the forehead, and then the fun part will start: the dreaded stubble

Wow, he looks awesome, Tesh!!

So I took a 2nd stab at this and if I told you he's supposed to be looking at you, it'd be all wrong :) ah well, next lesson, eyeball gaze

The gaze is not too far off. Just a little nudge to the right. Practice makes perfect, no? :)

So i decided to try and draw my fav elf. He felt a little easier because maybe the facial detail in game just wasn't what it is today.

And no he doesn't have lips. Those are eraser marks. They seem to ruin the whole thing. Think it'll be okay if I just do lipless wonders from now on?? :)

tgmLcc4.jpg

I read the tips but this one was tricky because his head is at a teeny angle.

And hey just thinking, would it help to provide our point of reference so we can help eachother pick out where we could improve? I know I can never tell if I have a square head because I've been working on the eyeballs for a half hour!

This fenris image is just from the wiki wiki

Made a few tweaks to fenris but I'm going to start fresh now

OoooOOooo You caught the smoldering gaze :D

It might help if you use some guiding lines to make sure that all the features align symmetrically. I won't have time today to doodle, but I can show you what I mean maybe tomorrow.

Thank you! Those are my favorite features on him. :) I think I know what you mean about the symmetry lines but seeing how you would do it a slightly angled plane would be great! I'll try it in the meantime on someone head on. Alistair next I think

Fenris is looking good :)

So, here's what I meant when I mentioned angles. As for the doodle on the side, that's how I generally start out my portraits. They look very messy to begin with, and then get adjusted many times while I paint.

However... When I use natural media, I spent a LOT of time laying down the initial sketch. It does not look messy at all, and everything is accurately measured. Otherwise, the proportions would not turn out alright. So, you have to take into consideration the media you are using.

I strongly recommend taking your time when establishing the proportions, and to only begin laying in the details once you are certain of your measurements.

@ tesh

Thank you so much for the guidance and the example! There really is a scientific way to get this right :) I absolutely love the idea of using these lines, I'd feel more in control and not caught up in what goes where.

I'll try this soon!

@Qween: check this videos out! Just watch whichever you want to draw. Proko's on drawing heads on any angles

That can helps a lot in keeping angles & proportions

@Tesh: how are you going to do those stubbles? Manually added? Wow he actually looks so young without any facial hair. Maybe we should do some experiments of Aging Cullen. First that young boy without any facial hair/lines, then add Current Cullen, then add some more and get the Aged Cullen.

And okaaaay I got bored of drawing Cullen so... Background shouldn't be coloured, and I still can't draw those eyes or mouth <_<

@Tesh: how are you doing those lips thing with four petals you mention without giving the character the look of goldfish?

OooOOooo DORIAN :D I love Dorian :D You made him look fabulous :)

So... Stubble. I am working on it right now, and the way I thought of drawing it is by laying a textured base down first, and then adding individual hairs here and there to give the illusion of stubble. Will let you know how it will turn out...

As for the lips, just keep in mind that the petals are just a general guideline - you can change the size and shape any way you like. I tried to illustrate that. Hope this helps :)

Another Cullen. Shouldn't have coloured the background too.
