@ Shantia - I think I can see your frustration in your brush strokes :D Still, good start :)

Worked a bit on Cullen's anatomy. I am horrible at rendering muscles... I guess that's why I should practice more :P

@Tesh Hahaha yes I was not a happy girl right then :) Gonna start on Jon Snow today, but I am so sleepy my cat woke me up and he goes crazy, he specially likes licking on plastic bags and oh, the noise hahaha I had to carry him out of the room several times but just as soon as I was back in bed he went in again to annoy me out of bed hahah. At last he came up to bed to cuddle instead :) Poor guy have diabetes so I can't give him food whenever.

@Qween Thank you, yes it would probably work if the rest of the portrait had the same style. Haha love the bed head idea :D

@ Shantia - I thought my cat was the only weird one that liked to lick plastic bags :P Sounds like my mornings are similar to yours: 6:30 am, little lump jumps on bed, walks around our heads, smells my face. I wake up - barely - pet him, he turns his butt in my face, then meows. Loudly. And he does.not.stop... Until I get out of bed, and feed him. He is not diabetic, but he is fat, so his food is restricted :)

Thank you everyone! Glad you like the image so far :) And, Ceru, if this gave you a nose bleed, prepare for more :P Because I am not happy with my anatomy skills, so I will be practicing more.

@Tesh Hahaha that's so funny, that plastic bag noise OMG I hate it, but it always succeeds he get's me up from bed. Since he got diabetes a few months back he doesn't jump very much (hind legs get nerve damage, but it is very possible to heal), but he has improved alot, thank god he is a nice cat, we have to do blood test to check glucose and give him insulin (shot) every morning and night, but he just purrs :D

You won't be done until we all have nosebleeds? hahah

Aie! I'll have to eat more spinach apparently if I want to survive this drawing group... (Is this a conspiracy? Tesh's Cullen, Morlanwen's Cullen, Qween's Chris Hemsworth. you guys are killing me!)

That's why I don't always like to share a WIP - because in the rough stages, it can look completely different from the final product, and is not a real indication of the quality that I can produce :)

Don't worry, Shantia, it will turn out well :)

Haha yes indeed! And thank you, there is alot of stuff in that picture that is going to be challenging, hair, fur and beard. But I might skip out on the fur and do another outfit for him, this will really put my patience to the test, I have to make sure I am very happy that day haha.

Blending started, and also made the skin slightly darker.

He reminds me of Johnny Depp right now :P

Also the pressure sensetivity makes it all go so much faster, I love it so.

Guess that WIPs are always weird... But still you got his eyes though...

Here's mine. I still don't have my tablet back so it's rather traditional for now. I'm redrawing my last Cullen drawing since I really don't like what I got last time.

Is it crazy to say that I actually love traditional medium more than digital...? Somehow I love the way there's no undo button... All errors, all those uncertain strokes that results in , it's recorded. Traditional's really a responsive medium.

@ Shantia - Glad you are enjoying the pressure sensitivity :) Jon is coming along nicely :)

@ Ceru - I am just continually amazed at the progress you are making! The shading looks lovely on your newest portrait. And, yes, natural media is a must. You have to train your hand, and that is the best way. Your brush/pencil strokes automatically become more confident, and stronger faster in natural media than in digital. Keep up the excellent work!

@Tesh: Thanks, TBH I don't know what I'm doing... Every drawing is rather like that, I don't have any idea of how to proceed so... bam. People are saying for shading one must use B series pencil (2B to 6B at least) but for some reason I can't.. O.o

this Cullen is all done with 2H (sketch), HB (light shading) and B and an unholy amount of blending stick...

Say, how do you guys do shading on pencil? I still do that same method with while doing digital: very light srokes over and over with HB and B pencil... then lots of blending sticks and smudging with kneaded eraser.

And a very stupid question: should pencil be sharp or not? I saw a contradictory things on the internet...

@Ceru: for shading, whether the pencil should be pointy or blunt, it depends on what kind of shading you want. If you want to do, say, cross hatching, having a sharp pencil will let you make precise, narrow lines when you do the hatching. If the pencil is blunt, the lines will look "fuzzier", lighter and less precise.

Personally I like shading with blunt pencils (I find it faster to cover larger areas) and I don't use a blending stick too much... it takes too long for me. I'm fairly impatient when it comes to pencils nowadays.

Edit: Here is a quick sketch I just did of Solas.

Spoiler

Looking at it closer, there are several mistakes but I think I'll fix them another time.

@Shantie: Jon Snow is looking great so far! I can see the Johnny Depp-ness, but his features look very much like Kit Harington. Good job  :D

@Pro (can I call you that? I am lazy) Thank you, I never before realised what a great nose Kit has hahaha. And I love your Solas, keep us updated onm the progress :D

@Ceru The portrait looks lovely, and as Tesh said you just continue to do great progress, you are working hard and it's definatley paying off!

@Ceru Wow! you are progressing so fast, I am really impressed by your motivation and hard work. Nice portrait you have there, keep them coming! ;)

I have used 4B and 6B in an old sketchbook before but if you don't apply a fixative it gets so dirty that I am avoiding it now. I was enjoying drawing/shading with the black conté, as showed in the Proko's videos, it is very soft and don't get as dirty as the 6B graphite while shading, but it takes some time to get used to it and probably requires a fixative too, however I prefer the black it gives me, instead of the grey of the graphite.

When I am doing small sketches/studies I prefer the 2H to draw and B, 2B for shading, but I usually don't blend to show some of the pencil lines, or that is what I tell myself when I run out of patience.

@ceru: your shading is amazing!! You really got a good feel for that light source. I'll reiterate a few responses already, that small sketches I like using pointy pencils, just to focus on the detail (like those blasted tear ducts!) And will use a blending stick, although I need practice with that.

I seem to find that Bs erase cleaner too, so I did do alot with HB when I started, but have since moved to 2B. They forgive me :D

@procutemeister: Solas looks awesome! The lines are really striking! !

And okay guys, do so many of us really have such weird-ass cats? I have one who thinks he's a person and will start talking to us every morning...I think I'm starting to understand him! My other thinks he's a dog and licks our faces to wake up and sleeps in our arm pits every chance he gets...and my 3rd...well she's the reason everything in our house is wireless. Chewed through gaming mice, keyboard and mad expensive headphones!!! Garrr...wub her...

@Pro: Cross hatching on pencil? Wow I never know it can be done on pencil. Going to try tomorrow. Thanks ;)

@Al: Hmmm conté... isn't it too black...?

@Qween: I can't have cats or dogs because of my BF being super allergic... :(

Anyway... quick 30 minutes sketch of my favourite Jedi Master of all time, can't help myself when I saw that new star wars trailer. Tried drawing chewy yesterday, he looks like broccoli O.o

Well this is a very cartoony drawing just because I need to draw a Jedi... so it's much quicker than the one for full rendering since I don't care if the proportion's wrong (the nose/ears are even exagerated a bit). That Cullen I'm rendering now took me around 2 hours to sketch to get the proportion better.

Guess that it comes faster everytime...? I got one sketchbook full of heads already actually (very few are rendered... You know, trying to draw a head constructed but without detail or rendering, drawing different person's heads), it's much quicker now than the first 20 pages I can tell you that. First time took me like a week each evening.

Reference

Qween, I'm sure you can draw quicker after the first 20 heads ;)
