Ceru, Arya looks soooo good!! Shes so adorable and deadly...and nuts

So I dont have a nifty way to do this (is there an app or program anyone recommends?) to overlay my sketch with my source file to see what I'm doing wrong. Tesh - you helped me see my errors when I was last drawing Nikolaj...weeelll...I'm trying him again Loomis style and can't quite figure out what I'm doin wrong!

Help?? :( *sniffles* am I on the right track or have I missed the Loomis concept entirely?

Edit: gah!! Just seeing them side by side helped!! The degree of his face on the far side isn't as extreme, and my foreshortening skills need major work. Ignore me  I'll work on fixing what I'm seeing now and will run back here for help later  :D

...gosh...Arya's eyes are awesome...really intense, Ceru!

TBH: I cheat. I used ruler and measure the milimeter... For the circle, the oval, the 1/3 things... It was all measured actually... Not sure that this is a good idea but well...

Qween, probably before adding details & features, try to draw the head construction first? From what I see there's something wrong with the eyes... The right eyes (in our left) should not be seen as much as that no? You're making as if the eyes go up to the flattened part of the cranium, there should be a bit of distance & if I get it correctly your eyes are not aligned.

Try probably add a parallel line below the brow line to align the eyes? And the iris ain't as big as that no? For the right eyes

How about putting the paper you're drawing on the photo, then put it against a window on bright sunny day? Vor did that for tracing the sketch to watercolour paper

@Ceru I recognized Arya from the beginning even if I don't follow GoT. Your improvement is awesome, Ceru! And you're also developing a very personal style.

@Qween I tried the Loomis style and I think that getting the first lines right is very important, specially the ones that form the cross indicating where the face is pointing. I had to adjust the eyes a few because apparently I don't know how to properly draw a curve over a sphere  :D Maybe it would be a good idea to do the tracing thing not for everything, but to get those lines correctly.

@AC Wow that Qunari looks badass! I wouldn' want to cross her  You really got the skin tone, and the eyes are very intense.

@AC - love her!! Major badassery going on ;)

@Ceru - I don't think it's wrong to measure at all and I feel like at this stage, it'll help us understand positioning of features. I might just give it a try seeing as how well it worked for you! :D

I did start to cheat on Nikolaj..I have a samaung note tablet, and layered on the photo and a sketch layer (using the protractor tool!) to start figuring the position of all these lines...I didnt end up using it but if you guys say its okaaaay  he's my main project for the weekend then!

I think your proportion is ok, however the position of the head is a little off, his head in the reference is more inclined to the front... he is looking more down than the head you have drawn, also the mouth is too low, in the reference the mouth and nose are much closer and it is an almost horizontal line.

I don't think it is wrong to trace to understand how the head is placed, and where the lines and features goes while studying the head, when I am stuck I usually draw my lines over the reference to see where they should be, when I understand it I do it without tracing to compare, and if my lines look right I redraw it again many times to memorize them.

I don't trace for all the drawings, usually the ruler is to ensure that the left & right eyes are of the same size (or at least the space between them, and the middle line). Also to ensure that the first big Circle & Oval & divisions for head construction is correct + that 1/3 and 1/3 and 1/3 rule. The rest is a bit of guesswork... That's probably why the mouth & nose are always off.

Guess that I should try tracing construction lines on photos for studying foreshortening.

EDIT: Qween; the eyes are too big no vs the photo?

EDIT 2: Qween, from what I see you don't conserve the angle between the side of the head and the front. Probably do this: for the side of the head, see the angle between the brow & the ears. trace a line from his left brow vs top of ears. Then trace another line joining the two brows. This angle must be conserved for the whole head. Remember in Proko's video about drawing head from the profile, his first of drawing the head series? He show a box & say the angles must be conserved. I mean that one.

Bamm?

EYxRl6Q.jpg

At least maybe a little more better-er? i totally started from scratch again

thank you all so much for your feedback!! I did what was suggested and did my damndest to draw a perfect circle and then just took a ruler to make sure my oval was a perfect 2/3 (i think that's what it is? ) and then ensured that it was tri-sected evenly. Oy! Definitely felt like geometry, which I don't remember being very good at...or measuring on a ruler..what the hell does a 1/16" look like?!? Did i conserve lines though?! I think I did this time...phew!

We'll see how he turns out this weekend...but there are sooo many front facing (non-foreshortening!!) photos of Jaime Lannister, I may give in later  Thanks guys! ;)

edit: that be my Snuggy in the corner there...don't mind him...and yes, they're still cool in this house ^_^

I think it looks much better now, definitely the angle resembles the one in the reference :)

Snuggy is your cat? I wants pics! ^^

The head looks better, I can see the volume now Qween :)

An idea that probably help:
1. Print the photo, trace the angle stuffs I mentionned onthe photo. Keep the angle as you draw
2. If you really can't "see" it in 3D, use some play-doh (pate à modeler, idk what it is in English), that kind of soft clay toy to make the rough form of the head and tilt it in the angle you want. That's what a friend of mine made me do once. I'm going to do that again for drawing my little cartoony elf

1 vote for Snuggy photo ;)

What a great study in the cranium, Al! I admire your patience in making sure you get it right, here I am rushing to put features on all lopsided!   Great job!! :)

Sometimes, I really hate my computer :'( I do not receive notifications anymore and still no answers from moderators about this *sigh* If any of you have an idea how to receive again, ...

Since I have nothing else to do (it's rainning all days, no more walks in the wood, I can't just stay outside watching the rain drops on me right ?.. Am I rambling again ?? ^^) here is another WIP :

It's lookin good Marlanwen! :D

I started yet another drawing, the pile is getting bigger haha.

After seeing Imshael, and learning he was the desire demon, I was kinda disappointed (wasn't very desirable). So going around tumblr someone had drawn a different  version of the male desire demon, so I'm deciding to join along and try my own  :D

don't worry, it's not NSFW

...well not yet it isn't, hehe >:3

@Al Wow, one day students will use your head studies! So much patience.

@Morlanwen What are you using, charcoals? Ink? I really like that almost graffiti-ish look you got.

@AC Male demon yaaasss!

@Ab: ... do not tempt me, demon XD

wait, that's how you see Imshael? Hehe is he going to be an amazingly good looking guy or not? I'm not happy with the version they gave us in game. Not good looking enough. Are you going to... continue downward? XD

How's the Qunari going?

@al: is it based on Cullen's head? Wow you are really hardworking! I only did the 90° turning from front view to side view with zero foreshortening and it's already strenuous! Whew...

@Morlanwen: Wow you're already developing a distinct style! Is that Samson...?

I did basic shading on Arya. Needs more shading later on. Still struggling with depth & volume... Somehow the volume looks much less solid than last time I did Cullen -_-"

@al: is it based on Cullen's head?

Yeap, I extracted his model from the game and imported into Blender 3D to use as a reference, I added some lines and circles as guides and I am using a 120o camera's lens to view the model, to avoid too much perspective distortion when I am too close to it. And each drawing is more or less 15o from the previous one. If you want the file or some screenshots of it let me know.

Oh my gosh! I don't stop by for a few days, and look at how much wonderful work you all have done!

Sorry I've gone AWOL for a while, but I had a presentation to prepare for, and we're also house hunting... So, yeah. Busy. With stuff that has nothing to do with art

Let's get going then :D

@ Ceru - Arya looks incredible! The shading is excellent! At the risk of sounding like a broken record: Ceru, you are improving so much so quickly :) Keep it up! Your efforts are paying off :)

@ Qween - Glad to see you are getting the hang of construction :) It's a bit tedious, I know, but it is worth investing time and effort into. Your portraits are going to turn out so much better :) Nikolaj is looking good so far.

@ ACD - Your Qunari looks like a tough lady :) I like her. As for the male desire demon - yeah, I'd be tempted... very mush so

@ Al - Heads! Heads, everywhere! Your precision is amazing. Wish I had such patience, because this is excellent practice.

@ Mor - Is that conte that you are using? Tough medium, great results so far :)

@ Vor - Oops, I completely missed your drawing :) It is a very touching piece. The infant's arm needs to be adjusted a little bit. Try to draw in the shoulder and upper arm. They should be visible from that angle.

After a long and grueling struggle, Tesh managed to break from her cage in the laboratory, escape the Mad Apes Monsters that imprison her there and bravely fought her way out with the help of Mr Blue Eyes ;)

Hehe welcome back, how's the watercolour doing?

Al, do you by chance have a few of Cullen's head shot from side view to back view please?
