After a long and grueling struggle, Tesh managed to break from her cage in the laboratory, escape the Mad Apes Monsters that imprison her there and bravely fought her way out with the help of Mr Blue Eyes ;)

Hehe welcome back, how's the watercolour doing?

I haven't been able to draw anything since my last update in Izzy... The water colour will have to wait just a bit longer, since I need to finish Izzy first, and then Timebean's drawing. And then I have a queue for a couple of commissions... So, yeah :)

Wow you accept comission now? Ready to go pro & freelancing? ^_^

Ah yeah, if you're going to do that, just curious, do you already start networking elsewhere on more serious art networks? Someone told me if you want to do freelancing Behance is a good place but never put anything there except when you really feel ready & only your best works... IIRC There's also lots of animator & illustrator I like on artstation.com. A friend told me that these sites have already good network established community. Just saying if you're ready to do freelancing

Oh, no... I haven't gone anywhere professional. It's just that people have seen my drawings, and asked if I took commissions. If I do a commission, I do not get distracted by anything else, so it takes much less time to finish it :) If I am working on a request, I tend to get distracted :P

No wonder people are requesting commissions Tesh, your drawings are amazing! :)

I had to take aside the steampunk mother for a few days; my niece is taking her first communion next week, and as a gift I made a photo frame with hama beads and want to put a drawing of mine inside the frame instead of a picture. I am copying a pic of her and this is my first version (definitely not the last one) I'd greatly appreciate your help, specially on the mouth and curly hair :) Sadly I can't post the photo I'm taking as reference, for she is minor.

Wow I love the hat & the nose, it's really well done :)

Are you going for a cartoony look or a more realistic one? The eyes are a bit too far away from one another, it's normally 1 eye distance between the the left & the right one. If you're going cartoony, probably make it even bigger? ;)

Say, which version are you guys prefer...? I get really crappy scanner and it's either sacrificing the contrast, or the light shading details...

There are too many errors in any case... And I learnt about an alternative function to kitchen paper towel... <_<

V1: less contrast with soft shading visible on her face

V2: More contrast

Thank you Ceru! I'm going for a more realistic look, though not very detailed. You're right about the eyes! I'll correct that in the next version.

I have the same problem as you with the scanner; I tend to do very soft shading and half of it is lost in the scanning. Same with watercolours and pencils, the more subtle tones are lost. Even if her gaze is more powerful in version 2, I like v1 better, because the shading is better appreciated. Amazing job, by the way!  :)

Guess that if you're going realistic... The iris is not that big? And the eyebrow? Otherwise I love her already, those teeth ;)

The iris is about that size in the original picture; I guess it's an optical effect, since the pic is taken in the dark with flash and she has very dark and small eyes. I'll try to make them a bit smaller so they look less cartoonish. The eyebrows are covered by the hat, I think that's her mum's hat and it's a bit big for her :D

You're helping me a lot, Ceru!  <3

Hehe alright then, I don't know the proportion of small kids yet so probably the iris are really big. In any case the head construction looks good, I can see the volume well ;)

@ Ceru - Arya looks amazing! I prefer to see the soft shading :)

@Vor - You've taken on quite the challenge. For me, drawing children and people who are laughing heartily are the most difficult subjects. I think the mouth needs a bit of adjustment. The portrait is pretty much a 3/4 view, but right now the mouth appears to be drawn frontally. And remember that lips become thinner at the edges. Also, the lower lip generally casts a shadow onto the chin.

oooo a bunch of new wips!!

@Vor: she looks great and I agree with ceru and tesh, and also, I bet there's some laughter in the corners of her eyes too, no? maybe little crinkles? That might help with the eyes too

@Ceru: this may just be me but I like less contrast and softer lines. Especially when everything is so shaded, it blends together better. Paper towels! Who knew? :)

@Tesh: I'm with Ceru here; she's not done? She's gorgeous! :) you totally deserve the commissions you're getting, you have a distinctive style and it's great people are noticing!

@Al: *gasp* Cullen heads!! I see the one that says smexxy time under the 2nd spoiler tag. I'm working on a less thrilling one of him now but these are great, thank you!

And you guys use a scanner?!? ooops... I take a picture and adjust it. All my lines washed out when I first scanned that I never tried it again

Thank you, everyone :) Glad you like Izzy so far :)

As for commissions, those will go into my cookie jar for a Cintiq 13HD tablet. With us moving, and the house needing renovations, etc, etc, I would feel bad spending money on such a luxury. But, if I earned the money through commissions - even if only partially - that would make it better :)

@ Al - I moved your awesome Cullen references to the DA Reference thread.

@Qween Is that Daenerys? (or am I just beginning to see GoT characters everywhere? :D) You're improving much with the Loomis method, but I don't know why the eyes always seem too big (perhaps because of the iris?)

@Tesh I hope you get a lot of commissions so you can get that Cintiq! You're a great artist and a very nice person and you deserve it :)

So, I traced the fundamental lines on my niece's drawing and made corrections and a bit different shading. Your suggestions were very helpful, thank you so much! There were also some mistakes I noticed by comparing to the photo reference; for instance my niece has a quite eloganted face and in the first drawing it was wider. I think the result is much better now; the halftones are done, tomorrow I'll add the deeper shades and highlights and the hair.

Edit: Tesh you're completely right, people laughing are the most difficult subjects; I'm specially afraid of teeth, they're so difficult to draw so they look like... well, teeth, and not chiclets or a sudoku template. I had a very hard time drawing the mouth, but a tutorial saying "try to daw them as part of a single piece instead of separate little pieces" saved my life and I think it went good for the first time.

Haha totally Daenerys and totally still having trouble keeping my eyes the same size. I'm gonna give in and use a ruler til I get it right but at least she's recognizable!

And your niece is looking great! I do love the hat and I can't wait to see how her hair turns out!

Everyone's stuff is looking great!!  :D

 Sorry I haven't been active, I've been busy for the past couple of days and drawings have kinda been put on hold until I find the time, so everything's taking longer than it should. I'll still continue to pop in and check on everyone whenever I can  ^_^

Wow, I've been away for a few days and so many new WIPs already!

@Qween: Aaaah Dany's looking good, I can see the volume of the head really well. That's already a very great improvement :)

I'm with Vor though, the eyes are a bit big. I don't think you need to make the eyes that big, but add contrast there to make it more noticeable? That's to say people keep telling me to make the highest contrast at the eyes. Easiest way to do this from my experiments is to make the highlight as a completely white spot on the pupil area. That keeps black & white contrast for every single eye colour. & the Eye socket shading can also be made contrasted. (Probably not the best way though). Also, the eye shape can normally be divided into 3 planes for the top line and about 2 for the lower line. So usually the top lid is more curved than the bottom no?

@Vor: Oooh I love the had motives, that one is really great/

Started sideview today (well, yesterday). Not sure how far I'll go with this, probably just block the basic greyscale shading to understand the bone position & planes from sideview.

Huge beginner mistake: insufficient paper size. Should've used A3 or A0... I'll have to correct its wings digitally.

And one day, I will bring this elf to life, make her dance and jump and laugh and everything else a little elf would do.
