I see you've been working hard as usual; from your last sketches, the one I like best is the last one. It's great you're trying different views and subjects. Did you use the Loomis method for the side view?
If you're interested in animating your little elf, I think Jazza has animation tutorials; I didn't see them but maybe they're worth checking.

IIRC Tesh gets lots of work? Morlanwen's sometime in Tumblr, no idea where Qween is. ACD101 is sometimes around (at skype) and sometimes als is here. Pro is often at tumblr too. The rest of the world, no idea ![]()
Cullen's side view is also loomis (explained by Proko). TBH it's very difficult for some reason, can't get the sensation of volume at all ![]()
Say Vor, do you watch Jabba's only or both Jabba & Proko? Any recommendation? Did you use Loomis' approach for your nephew's portrait?
The last one (Alistair with griffon you mean?), well that one takes many hours... That little elf & the first griffon was quick things though, each elf takes around 10 minutes, the first griffon 2 hours? The Alistair one takes.... a night. Alright, I skipped sleep to draw that (don't do this folks...)

I check the group from time to time, haven't post anything because I have started an online drawing course... so last week I was sharpening the pencils and rendering cubes and spheres. ![]()
@Ceru when you say it is difficult to get the sensation of volume you mean in the finished drawing? or while building it?

Ceru, thanks for the pointers on the eyes. It's still my biggest pitfall but I'll try fixing her with your guidance!
Your griffin and side view is looking great! I like proko alot for portrait lessons and I'm not sure how his figure drawing lessons translate here, but his lines are so soft and flow and curve gently that I wonder if that helps with adding volume to heads too. You're drawing a 3d ball floating in space, so just c curves and s curves, right?
I haven't tried a 100% side view but I'll give it a whirl and we can share notes

@Morlanwen: WOW!!! That's awesome. Seriously, that's awesome. You've improved really really really a lot. I really love those eyes & lips, they looks so luscious.
@Qween: don't follow my guidance, I'm a beginner... I just say what I think, there are chances I got it wrong ![]()
Hmmm I'll try what you say about more curvy & flowy lines. Not sure that the problem is in the lines though, it's more on the form.
@Al: I can't get any feeling of volume during the construction. Tried with different people & photos but it still feel weird. Usually before adding features & just do that ball & jaw stuffs, I can feel the volume for front & 3/4 view. I can see in my head the 3D forms. Not with sideview. I can't visualize the planes at all even while looking at that basic human head planes thing. Probably I'll have to go carve a mini styrofoam head plane model one day....

so I had my first drawing class last night and I basically had to deconstruct what I'd learned with loomis. He told me NOT to draw the construction lines, we instead drew the planes of the model's face with shadow. Absolutely no features and it was actually pretty cool not to worry about them. And it really makes you more concerned with the ins and outs of a face that the features go into. for example, eye sockets around the eye instead of the eye itself.
I wonder if that would help with our problems getting volume from side view? Where do we see depth from the side? cheek, cheekbone and the slight curve into the nose and eye? I'll practice with just shadow and planes tonight and if it helps me I'll recommend it

For my niece's portrait I didn't use Loomis approach but a grid; I didn't have many time to work with construction and as it was a closeup so I thought grid would work better.
Yes I meant your Alistair + griffon drawing, it's not advisable to stay up all night but it paid off
@al you're doing a drawing course, so nice! Be sure to share some of your creations ^^
@Qween I hear you; I love visiting my family but I forgot to bring any materials to draw and I'm really missing it.
@Morlanwen wow just WOW!! That is really amazing!! My bf saw your drawing while I was looking at it and he said "Wow that's really cool"

Qween: I only use graphite and tons of tea to keep me awake at night (and speculoos too ^^)
At this rate, it will be done in a week (or maybe two .. I now realize drawing take a looooot of time ^^ ... and I don't even draw from my imagination but from a screenshot... I imagine drawing something from scratch take even more time)

But I tried what I was talking about earlier and not so successfully but holy crap it was the most fun I've had drawing in a while!!! It's just all willow charcoal, messy as hell, and basically I blocked out all the shadows of his face, got my fingers in there to swirl it around, and used a kneaded eraser to make areas lighter. Looking back, I realize I've never shaded a whole face, just left lighter areas paper white. Definitely a fun exercise, even though he's total crap

The course seems fun ![]()
That's really great if you love it, guess that you'll learn & improve so much!
....help... If someone can please give opinion on the composition...? ![]()
I draw the griffon from lower leg up and the whole body length. The wings can be adjusted too

@Qween: Say Qween, is that sepia crayon on your drawing?
The griffon's a gal, her name is Pouncebeak. I killed Al's first girlfriend in my playthrough so I'm giving him a second one. The one he's bonded to until death tears them apart XD
Owwwh Al on a Griffon! Yessss... I have no idea on how to draw them but YESSSSS... XD
Say, do you think that Contre-jour lighting can be dramatic for this one...? I'm torn between this light-from-the back one or just using three-quartered standard key lighting...

Say Qween, is that sepia crayon on your drawing?

@Qween that drawing session with willow charcoal sounds so fun! You also achieved a very interesting look :-) I think I'll try to do something with very basic lines and blocking shades, I think the freedom of it and also focusing on forms and volumes will make it a great exercise.
@Ceru The backlight gives it a quite epic look. Regarding composition, as you don't have much space on the right I would suggest adding a bit of blank space on the left so the characters are not so centered.

@Vor: Thanks ![]()
Does this looks better? I don't manage on the how to put the focal point to the intersection of rule of third things... No idea on how composition work O.o
Guess that it means that the pic will need more contrast in term of colour. Colder colour for Alistair (armour in Silver & Blue) compared to the brown tone of the griffon & background in warm colour. Hmm. AAAAARGHHHHH!!!!

@ Ceru - love the back lighting! It actually makes the griffon look like he's radiating...the power of awesomeness of course..
They look great together! And no sepia, although I did recently buy soft pastels when I get brave enough.
@Vor - yesss, let me know how you like it! It was really cool, because it's almost like your fingers start touching the contours of a face.
I think I'll ultimately use a hybrid of both graphite and charcoal, for both definition and shading.
Here are a couple of wips, charcoal and graphite love. I hit a wall with Thranduil when I got to the drawing white hair part and that crazy crown
I feel like he wants to look like Loki too
Suggestions welcome! I think his chin needs work for sure...
And now I'm working on Natalie Portman...although I'm starting to make her look like the Black Swan
But I like her so far. Charcoal for cheek and forehead and when i knew I had the eye right, I added it there too, because i really like the definition.

All the art is looking amazing!
Sorry for not being active lately, I've been visiting family for the past week or so. I don't get much time to draw but hopefully I will soon! I've missed being able to post here ![]()

For me the side view is the more flattened one, it is like looking to the side of a box, I don't get the feeling of volume too unless I get into a tonal drawing like Qween is doing.@Al: I can't get any feeling of volume during the construction.
Composition is all about what you are trying to say with the picture, do you want to show the friendship between the characters, or how powerful/amazing the warden/griffon are together, or something else?Does this looks better? I don't manage on the how to put the focal point to the intersection of rule of third things... No idea on how composition work O.o
I would recommend those Principle of Design videos:http://www.ctrlpaint...iples of Design

Sorry that got long! I hope it makes sense.
@Qween you're getting good with charcoals + graphite! I really love both drawings. With Thranduil's crown I would suggest outlining the general shape first and getting down to the details progressively. Also maybe you don't need to draw every detail (unless you want, of course), you can suggest the texture on lighter and darker areas and detailed drawing on the midtone areas.

@Morlanwen
It looks great!!! I'm lovin' it
@QweenBeen Ahhh Thranduil!!
. Natalie Portman eyes look lovely! You drew them well ![]()
@Cerulione I really like the dramatic lighting! Pouncebeak is so majestic looking with Al ![]()
Here's more process on my Qunari. Her name is Hasra Adaar (if I didn't mention it) ![]()

Oh, wow, I've been away too long.
Sorry everyone, but things have been really hectic, both at work and privately. The way things are looking, however, this is going to be the summer of crazy for me. I'll do my best not to go MIA as I did just now, but I will probably be unable to post very frequently.
Lots of great WIPs here
I really like the progress Mor has made on her portrait. The shading is just so soft, I love it
ACD, your Qunari looks so badass
Ceru, if you go with the last image, where you superimposed a grid, the focal point will be the griffin. You can make Ali the focal point through lighting and contrast, but you might have to do a bit of cropping to make it flow better.
Let's see... What else have I seen? Oh, Qween's Thranduil looks really great
I love Lee Pace in the Hobbit movies, and you managed to captured his disdain of everything non-elven very well.
Great work, everyone! Keep things up!
