RL concerns come first so well, please just don't blow up the lab
@Qween: OOOOH Thranduil!! Wow you've really really reallly improve a lot
Seriously he looks really great. Can't wait to see it finished
@Ab: Hasra looking good as always
@Tesh: Yup I know, Guess that I'll have to work on the griffon's eyes since it'll probably be the focal point.
Thanks everyone for the composition advices, Since this is digital probably I'll rework some more before start shading. The lighting & shading is very very complicated so that one will take loooong time XD
another WIP to be alternated between Al&Pounce and Tishina's Zhenya. This one is to blackmail elfrooted from tumblr to write that story idea of her (Grey Warden Cullen AU).
Edit: Nevermind.. I just realized it is AU... He looks handsome as a Grey Warden
elfrooted from tumblr is planning on writing an AU where Cullen got recruited by Duncan instead of Amell of Surana
From the snippets I managed to coax from her, it sounds quite interesting actually. But well, you know the pairing she'll be putting is probably put her off this idea since basically she got lots of hatemail because of that.
Spoiler
Alistair x Cullen AU
TBH the first idea come from Galagraphia's rendition of Cullen as Warden. That big "What If" question
if I remember correctly. Loved 'em. I think a warden Cullen is a great idea...I may have to join the cause, Ceru!! Perhaps a drawing of a Cullen drinking from the chalice??
So I needed to start a mini sketch for hawke..closure I guess :-( and I missed fenris...
Suggestions on perspective are very welcome! I was trying to draw him carrying her but my figure drawing is sadly poor so I'm going to focus on their faces for this first try...
Edit: and grrr to her spaghetti arms...I can't figure them out!!
@Ceru Cullen as Warden? *fans self* This group is going to be the death of me I think you're really getting the knack of portraits, all of your latest drawings look consistent and well-done. For this one, only the plate looks a bit off; or is it supposed to get under the shoulder pad?
@Qween Fenris!! *fans self faster* The perspective on him is looking really good. It's a tough pose and I'm not sure I can help; but for her arms, keep in mind that in that posture the shoulder is right under the ear (that curve showing after the sleeve should be up the arm if it's the shoulder muscle, and closer to the elbow if it's supposed to be the biceps) If you can't find good reference photos, you can take a pic of yourself in that position. That's what I did for Ghilan'nain's hand holding the scalpel (later I forgot that I have tiny hands and I wanted her to have long, slender hands, but nevermind )
I'm working on a closeup of my mage for the Mage: The Ascension tabletop RPG. I know right now she looks like she has a moustache, but hopefully that will look better as shading for the rest of the face progresses
Spoiler
.
I also continued with my steampunk mom and, well... I think I don't understand how charcoal works She looks like she's black, and I don't have anything against it... but she's supposed to be white! I'll try to finish it and keep it as an exercise on how NOT to do charcoals.
@Qween: Guess that up to now many artists had experimented with this idea of
Spoiler
Cullen x Alistair, as well as Cullen x Dorian, several Cullen x Cass, Cass x Varric and all that crack pairings. In tumblr there are even Cullen x Samson & Samson x Inquisitor (mostly in AU of what if Cass recruited Samson indeed), many Jean Marc Stroud x Inquisitor or Warden and many many many things like that.
Sluggette and Elmroko had both experimented with the ideas, and now Slug & Elfrooted are joining force to make a comic on that Cullen x Alistair.
I managed to coax both of them for more snippets and apparently I'm going to need a box of tissue XD
ooh you want to draw Warden Cullen drinking from the Chalice...? Aaaaaaah... Do it. Hehehe. It's an interesting idea. GO FOR IT!!!
For your Fenris & Hawke drawing, seriously you have really really improve. The heads of Fen & Hawke has good volume from what I see, it's solid. Goood
I just see Hawke's arm a bit thin though? and probably the sleeve (except if it's super thick & hard clothes) it'll fall down instead of up because of gravity? The two heads are excellent
Probably about the arm: see the thickness of your own arm compared to the thickness of the body? Guess that more specific than that you'll have to learn anatomy... (ouch).
@Vor: yeah I know in the real screenies the real standard Grey Warden plate is quite lower from the shoulder pad but I need to change the position so that there are enough place to show the grey warden double griffon. So this is a mix between Duncan's Commander of the Grey armour (I use Grey Warden of Ferelden Mod) and the Inquisitor's Prowler Armour. Normally the breastplates in DAO is much lower except on the Prowler.
Vor, about that moustache & Mom looking too dark, guess that you can tweak it with making the area surrounding them darker? Now it looks too dark because the surrounding is still white, but once you put some values to the surrounding it'll make them look less dark. THis is a recurrent problem though: up to now there are about 2 techniques that might help:
1. Put everything in their mid value, so you can see directly how each big masses compared to the other. Darken or lighten as you wish. Practical for digital painting but impractical for charcoal/pencil
2. Proko's advice: when you do the drawing, for every mass, divide to 2 values (shadow & light). Then put the darkest value and the lightest value in place before starting to refine each area. That way you know for this area this is the darkest and this is the lightest so everything else must fall in between.
I tried no.2 and it works quite well on Aria & Cullen on Graphite
Qween, I'd say to have a look at some photos or yourself in the mirror and compare the thickness of the arm to the size of the head. That way you can get an idea of how things are proportioned.
Vor, your mage looks like the type you wouldn't wanna mess with Tough girl, eh? The proportions look good. Looking forward to seeing the progress on the shading. As for charcoal, I like to use the more porous kind, that does not leave very dark marks, and you have to build the shadows by successive layers. I generally shade, then wipe away with tissue, then shade again, etc. until I am happy with how it looks.
Thank you for the advice, Ceru! I use technique no.1 for pencils because it worked beautifully for Flemeth's drawing, and up to now it's worked very well, specially for portraits. I like getting the midtones first and then shades & highlight.
I'll use technique no. 2 for charcoals; trying to set midtones is what made the whole drawing go black So I'll make the rest of the drawing with the 2 values first and see how it goes.
Tesh, yes she's a tough girl and sick & tired of everything, I think you can see that on her face Wow I didn't think of the tissue! I wanted to remove some pigment, but there is only so much pigment the kneaded eraser would absorb. I'll definitely try that.
The "moustache" drawing is now on the finished works gallery, if you all want to take a look
Thanks for the pointers guys! I'll give my own arm a try and pretend it has all the same defined musculature as Hawke
Vor: your steampunk momis looking great and I'd recommend what Tesh does. I don't use compressed charcoal because it gets heavy and hard to erase (learned that the hard way!) But rather willow or vine sticks. And my kneadable eraser really starts to be come a brush, because I go a bit heavy, but then keep taking layers away with the eraser. But mine hasnt become saturated...yet! The effect is cool and I think it'll give you the results you're looking for
Mmmm dat lip scar, yum yum Nice work so far Ceru, I like how you've created the shape of the nose with the shading.
Qween, then those charcoal "pencils" that come in the Faber Castell set are compressed charcoal? (hello, lack of knowledge about charcoals xD) They are these graphite crayons and these graphite pencils
Vor: yeah I haven't been doing this terribly long but I was using the compressed stuff too until my drawing instructor said not to I'm not sure what your set includes, but if it says charcoal and it has four flat sides, like graphite, it's compressed and super unforgiving Imo. The messy stuff that creates great light and dark and almost feels like paint with your fingers if you have a medium tooth paper, is this stuff. I think any brand will do, but this is what it'll look like. Looooove it
@Qween: Oh yes I have them too, Coates charcoal. They are quite great really
Idk what compressed charcoal is, but probably you might want to avoid Pierre-Noire (black stone??) too (a kind of synthetic charcoal) since they are VERY unforgiving
Much more dense than porous charcoal like the Coates one.
EDIT: Finished Cullen's head more or less. Guess that I'll start rendering the neck & armour & give last touch later on.
@ Qween - Natalie is looking great so far. Her left eye and brow are at a sharper angle in the photo, so you might want to adjust that a bit. Just pop in front of a mirror with your drawing, and you'll be able to pick up what needs adjusting. Her lips are in 3/4 view in the reference, and you drew them just a bit more like a frontal view. Check to see how far along the horizontal axis of the mouth the middle of her lips is in the reference. Keep it up!
@ Ceru - Cullen's looking yummy. Just make sure to adjust the hair line. It should not come so far along his temple
@ Qween - See, this is why I want us to use paint that is stain and scratch-resistant for our renovations. Just in case our kid manifests an interest in drawing, and will decide to use the walls as canvas. Wouldn't be the first time in our family... I did that myself when I was a toddler As for the portrait, I feel your pain. I know a kid cannot be compared to a cat, but my old cat put his own mark on my drawings a few times: he barfed on one of them, he slept on one of them and when he woke up, he stretched and accidentally scratched the paper, he sat with his dirty butt on another one... yeah
