I hope that this doesn't sound offensive but I had just realized that for elf (and animals) putting the ears on lowered position like pro's icon makes the character looks rather submissive...

Yes, you're right actually... for example, dogs will flatten their ears against their head when they are scared or timid. When their ears are facing forward, the dog is paying attention, and when their ears are relaxed, they are friendly.  ;) It's a good way to tell how an animal is feeling.

Although the real reason Solas' ears are in different positions in my drawings is because my friends came up with this idea that his ears twitch when he's happy.  :)

Actually it'll be funny if all elfs' ears can twitch & move like animals XD. But then I'll be tempted to keep touching Solas' ears ^^

Another WIP

Ooh, I like the colors you used Ceru! Also the freckles (I love freckles  :))

He's very cute, good job!

edit: Here is a WIP of something I'm drawing for Solavellan day on Tumblr:

Lovely colours, Ceru! I also like his features, they are quite distinctive. But his hair seems too... high? Like with too much volume. I like all the hues in his hair, though.

@pro That looks lovely! Did you finished it yet? I'd love to see the finished piece.

Well, 20th Century Team reporting for duty  :D With the heat wave in Spain, I don't feel like doing anything but lying down in front of the fan. But I managed to go on with my hand practice; I can see I still have a long way to go, but I'm slowly grasping how it works.

@Vor: Thanks!  :D And no it's not finished yet... still working on inking it.

I'm sorry to hear about the heat wave  :pinched: Just a few weeks ago temperatures were hitting 38 and up, but now it's been raining almost every day.  :(

Your hand practice is looking good, I just have some comments:

  • the thumb is quite short; generally the thumb ends in between the knuckle and first joint of the index finger (in the middle).
  • the bases of the four fingers don't go in a straight line; they sit on a curve at the top of the palm.

Otherwise, you have the basic foundation done pretty well  :)

Thank you for your comments, pro, it's very useful to know what I'm doing wrong! I always fear that the thumb will be too long and end up making it too short, I'll keep that in mind.

Regarding the knuckles, if you look at the underlying pencil, the curve is there; but then they end up looking like they are in a straight line. Maybe because the lines separating the fingers end at the same point?

@Vor: They should look like they're in a straight line when you look at the back of the hand, but when you look at the palm the curve is more obvious.

Also I just noticed, you need to adjust the base of the fingers. From the back of the hand, the bases have a little bit of space in between where you can see the webbing between the fingers, and from the palm-side, they have flat curves in between, not the V-shape that you put there. (Although this is from observing my own admittedly skinny hands... hands with more meat on them might look different.)

And, you're welcome!  :D Glad to be of help.  :)

Thanks pro, I always see something weird where the fingers join but I can never put my finger on it! (pun half intended)  <3

My hands are quite chubby-ish; from the palm-side they are just as you described. From the back side, they almost have that v-shape but behind it you can see the curve of the webbing. The hand I drew was pretty slender so I see know that those spaces should definitely be there. Also it's good to keep in mind when I draw different types of hands, I never thought that the space between the fingers should have to change as well!

Spoiler

Please do tell me if you see anything else off! I don't know why, but with hands it's very difficult for me to identify what I did wrong.

Aww, thanks so much  <3 And the ghost hug is adorable! *hugs back*

And hands are quite complicated to draw, so it does get difficult to identify what's wrong.

For the first drawing, the little finger should be in line with the side of the palm rather than curved inward. For the second, it curves rather oddly outward, like the base of the little finger isn't pointing the same way as the rest of the others (I think it's because of the way the base is drawn). The third one looks good, though!  :)

Also because I felt like it, I did a quick sketch of a hand as well:

As for different hand shapes, I don't know how you feel about palmistry but I find their pictures for "types of hands" helpful.

Wow your hand sketch looks quite different from mine; I was going to try different postures but I think I will do the palm and back again to get it right!

I'm not into palmistry :D But those pics are definitely useful! My own hand is the conical hand, though I wish I had the pointed had; that's genes for you! I will draw all these different shapes when I get the basics right :-)

Oooh hands!!! wow you guys are quite advanced already XD. I'm still trying to figuring out the proportions.

@Pro: wow! I'd love to see how it'll turn out if ever you shade them :D

@Vor: Wow those are great already! Although I'm not sure whether it's just me or not, on my own hand there are less angle on the base of the little finger.

Thanks, Ceru! <3 Yeah you're right about the little finger angle, I guess that was me struggling to get the shape right  :D

I repeated the hand drawings following your very useful advice (thank you!  <3 ), and I think they improved a lot! Specially from the back side.

Spoiler

Edit: @Ceru Don't worry, it's not that I mastered the proportions at all, I just started to draw hands so that at least one part of the drawing looks the way it should  :D

Hmm is it just me or the palms look a bit long? Actually Idk how the knuckles can be drawn, guess that if there's knuckles it might look less off...

You mean the view from the back side? The knuckles are drawn following my own hand's reference: my skin takes that almond-like shape over the knuckles.

Edit: the top drawings are the first drawings I made, and the ones at the bottom are the new ones I made following your advice. Just in case :P

After suffering with hands, I thought I deserved some fun so I started my Tevinter mage  :D

I'm going for a totally comic book look and strange proportions (neck is too long, arms are too skinny) I laid out the basic lineart with pencils and plan to finish it with black fine point pen. I will also do the skirt and intend to have some serious fun with it.

Oooh she looks great! I love the fire effect on her left hand AND THAT LOOK! And the shoulder part of the clothing (how does it called?)

The cup & hands looks wrong somehow... But I don't know what's wrong T__T

Another WIP...

Thanks, Ceru! Later I'll look at myself in the mirror holding a wine glass to see what I did wrong. I guess the shoulder part would be the shoulder pad? I wouldn't know how to say in Spanish either (I draw things that I can't name, cool!  :D )

I loooooooove that drawing so much! Really, really love the colour on the sky (That's what you see from your window? Amazing view!) And you nailed the bird's (gryphon's?) perspective. And that is a WIP? Wow, the final piece will be a blast!

@Vor: forget what I said about the hand & cup, I tried it on a big object & it works well in front of the mirror.

Also about the clothing, is the clothing soft or hard? The pointy top looks really nice but I wonder how it can stay pointy if nothing's holding it on?

That sunset drawing is actually a mix from 2 places (my window & from memory of last week end's hiking trip). I really love the way the setting sun hits the mountain peaks last week but well, no photo so purely memory for that part. And yep the rest of the colour is how it's seen from my window :D.

For the eagle photo reference were used & adjusted :D. On the photo the bird was flying to the other direction though, so flipping the image makes the foreshortening perspective all wrong so in the end I re adjusted everything & not very sure anymore on the perspective.

Yep that's a quick sketch WIP, the mountain & eagle hasn't been rendered yet. It looks OK on small size but on the real canvas (6K * 4K pixel) it looks really rough hehe.

Wow Ceru, that drawing looks amazing! Love the colors!  :D

@Vor: Your mage is looking good, and I can't wait to see how the rest of her design looks  ;)
