Heyhooo!!! Sorry for the absence O.o

@Tesh: for the fan:On my Japanese fans there are "bones" so probably draw them too? Do you have one in hand? On the one I have in hand, the base (dark blue part) are actually extended to the top (attached to the bones) and it's what's giving the fans its form & folds. I have a Japanese fan in hand but it's a more soft coloured, semi-transparent one. Don't hesitate to ask for photos if you want?

Other than that I really like the colouring, it's a nice mix between warm & cool :D

Just continued my heartbalm drawing :(

The stock image I am using is a reference is here. So the skeleton of the fan is hidden behind the fabric stretched over it. Initially I wanted to have a complex image on the fan, but I think I will have to stick to flowers. I simply do not have the patience for it :P

Good progress on your heartbalm :) Since the light coming in from the window is blue, make sure to incorporate that into your colour scheme. Same thing goes for the warm light source.

Edit: Update :)

Tesh, the painting looks amazing and I loved the detail in the fan, however I think the green colour on her right hand is too strong, unless you are adding more green on the other hand too, or more shadows on the hands...

Can you make it a more high count polygon somehow, or would you have to use a new model? (sorry if it's a nonsense question, I have no idea about these things!)

Working on it, head done already... probably needs a new painting too.

Thank you, Al :) Believe it or not, the initial colour palette of this drawing was centred on blues and desaturated yellows and greens. So, her right hand is a remnant of the old colour scheme which I haven't gotten around to correcting yet. Hope to finish this piece during the week :)

Your tiny Kaidan looks amazing! I wish I could figure out 3D programs, but every time I tried out 3D Studio Max, I ended up giving up. I am not even going to talk about Lightwave. I would probably enjoy Z-Brush, but it would take a lot of time and dedication for me to get comfortable with it, especially because I have never sculpted in my life.

Looking forward to the finished model :D

@Al: can you actually make mini Kaidan move? For animation? It looks much more soft already with higher poly count, although lower one is super cute somehow :D

@Tesh: I really love her eyes and ear rings. The eyes makes strong vocal point, they are so bright and green :D

By curiosity, who is that...?

There's also some green hue on the shoulder, collar bone.

Update on Squishy & Red Spike: TBH I really feels like losing the feeling & it's becoming a bit... I don't feel it as strong anymore and the pic becomes so bland.

Cery, I think you are hitting up against the same problem that I usually come up against. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to fix it other than practicing more drawing... Basically, my sketches always seem to be more fluid and relaxed, but as soon as I lay down the colours, everything becomes stiff. You can see this in the Fallout 4 drawing I did for Mel.

However, for the text that you crossed out, I think you managed to figure out all of those things very nicely. Don't worry about the muscles - unless he is supposed to be emaciated, the muscles will show (and will be quite well defined too).

Maybe adding a bit of colour variation would help? Right now the bedding is all blue. Maybe add some purples in the shadows? Don't use shades of the same colour in your drawings. Use the colour wheel to find harmonious combinations, and build your shapes with several colours.

As for my Madame, she is no one in particular. I used several references, and right now she doesn't look like any of them. I just wanted to draw a portrait that would include jewelry, a complicated fan (yay, I made my life difficult voluntarily!), and be a goo practice for skin tones :) All the greenery is left over from the previous colour scheme. I will paint over, however :)

Ceru your drawing is looking good! I think good managing of colours is very difficult, I already have learned how to get volume with pencils but when I use watercolours everything looks flat. I think it's mostly a matter of practice, as Tesh said. For the back muscles, maybe in that posture it's the shoulder blades that would show most? Back muscles don't show that much usually I think, I had a very strong back in my swimming days and was pretty skinny, but you wouldn't really see it except in certain postures (like lifting a weight or turning to one side) You can look at yourself in the mirror of maybe look at pics of swimmers for reference (they are strong and lean)

Al I love the look of your mini Kaidan with the higher polygon count on the face! I'd also love to see him moving, but no pressure :D

Tesh the pattern on the fan is really lovely, it looks very good now :)

Thanks, Tesh. I have tried to sculpt a few times, but still trying to figure out how to do it properly, the same with painting. But am I very comfortable with 3D mesh modeling, as long as I don't have to do in 3D Max, I hate its interface. :D

I loved the low poly one, as long as it doesn't move, otherwise it makes me cringe everytime the head turns. And yes, I can make him move... :wizard:

btw, the animations are not mine, they are motion capture animations from Unity, but I use it to test the mesh. And the higher poly one will move so much better and have facial expressions.  ;)

Aawww moving mini Kaidan is so cute!!  Can't wait to see the high poly version!

A bit of face practice (yes it's Abelas, and yes I have an brooding elf fixation problem  :D ) I still have all sorts of problems: nose, mouth, more rotated three-quarter view... but at least I think I'm grasping where everything should go (except the nose, I always get the impression that the nose is too short) Because I wanted to do several quick sketches, I'm using this short version of the Loomis method

Vor, it's great that you are approaching portraits in a systematic manner. If you begin to understand how the face is constructed, you will find it much easier to draw it :) And Loomis is a great source. Keep it up!

Also it's true, it's much easier to draw something when you understand how it's built and how it works. Also I enjoy it a lot more, knowing what I'm doing instead of just guessing and erasing once and again until I get it more or less right.

@Vor: On the rightest drawing, the nose feels a bit short. If you don't mind me saying, isn't the mouth slightly low? Idk if there are people with really low mouth but isn't usually mouth is more than halfway up between chin & nose since you do have lower jaws there. Also on the right drawing the nose is really too small no...?

Other than that it's great, I can feel the volume in ABelas' head. You do great with the brow & eyes volume IMO :D

I do love your way of thinking (no this is not a sarcastic remark). Just do more and try to figure out... Whelps basically that's true :D

You're right about the colour, I should add more colour. Started with given colour swatch (because I don't know yet how to work the skin colour myself -_- but guess that it's given for a white difused light.

In the end after lots of trials, while for Red Spike (golden skin) it looks more alive than the girl's pale white skin. Tried lots of combination and adding a layer of spray of the lighting colour on the skin on extra layer set to overlay/screen mode adds lots of life since it unifies the character with the surrounding :D

How is Madame?

TRUE! I didn't think about it... Thanks for the tip, TBH I didn't find any reference that looks exactly like what I imagine of Spike, really fine lean muscles but a really lean body laying down that side so well... Most reference photos are buffy guys or lean girls.

Don't know if lean enough (NSFW link - male back nudity) http://ninivekha.net.../Laying_Ref.JPG
or if I can post it here because nudity.

Hope it helps, though.

Latest project: tumblr banner, DAI Epilogue Style for Tishinada :)

Taking a break from painting & drawing that spiky red elf.

I don't find any reference pose that's giving this exactly so this is constructing based on many poses O.o

Ceru, do you watch posereference.tumblr.com? They are posting soooo many awesome references there! You might find the blog useful, and might find what you are looking for.

Very hard angle you have chosen. I would tilt her head a little bit more down, but it's not absolutely necessary for you to do so :)

Hehe I already sketched the whole head & face so nah... XD

Actually I wanted to make it side view or view from lower perspective (contre-plongé ??) instead of this angle (plongé? Idk what's it in English). But in the end it feels nicer like this because there's actually Cullen coming and seeing both of them so we see from his point of view. This is for Tish who's writing a Cullen x Surana fic.

Guess that I did see that blog but didn't find it there. Just checked from Senshi Stock's and basically this is taking 3 or 4 pose from Senshi and constructing the whole thing with Loomis' book.

Tricky angle indeed, Ceru, I think the left arm is a bit long and maybe needs a bit foreshortening? I love doggie's posture, it's such a... doggie posture  When they look at you with that unconditional love.

Tesh that's some evolution indeed! In the beginning you were going more for a comic book look? Her expression ended up being much more interesting in the final result.

Started working on Abelas; I have to tweak the legs, but given the posture it's not being as much of a pain as I thought it'd be. At first it suffered from my always drawing women (I had to widen his shoulders, twice); and it's definitely suffering from my preference for ballet dancers and swimmers bodies. Buff Abelas will have to wait  :P

Vor, glad you like how the final image turned out :) I was going for a stylized look to begin with, but I really didn't like it. It was not my style, and I wasn't happy with it. So I switched to the semi-realistic style that I usually adopt :)

As for Abelas, I think it might be useful to include some background elements, just to give the posture some context. I would also straighten his right foot, since the ankle seems to be at a painful angle right now. His left leg, in order for his foot to be beneath his other leg, would have to be at a sharper angle with his body. So, you would have to bring the leg closer, if you wanted to hide the foot. Other than that, I'm really glad to see you using construction lines. They will help guide you and increase your drawing speed with practice :) Awesome progress, Vor! Keep it up :D

Thanks for your comments, Tesh, they are very useful! I plan on adding some context, but I was experimenting a bit with the legs and didn't want to add anything until I had a definite posture. I also think I have to make myself draw more brackground; I usually draw little to none, partly by choice but mostly because I'm afraid of it. I will never learn if I don't practice!

Ah construction lines, I'm so glad I met them! :D I am lost without them, once I get them right everything seems so much easier.

Alistair :D I am experimenting with a colour palette I have never used before. So far I am pretty happy with the way things have turned out from this point of view. I am also enjoying a custom chalk brush that I have gotten through ImagineFX. The entire set is freely available from the artist, Bastien Lecouffe Deharme.

Oooh Abelas!

@Vor: The shoulder to head proportion looks good, and it's not the easiest pose to do so bravo :D

However isn't the right feet ankle's look rather forced, like it's nearly snapping...? Or is it just me?

I'm agree with Tesh, probably it's a good idea to put some elements just to say where he is, what's he is doing.

Construction line usually takes lots of time (for me) to get the proportion and mass right but afterward it'll makes things much easier so it's always a win solution :3

@Tesh: as said in tumblr, it's looking GREAT! <3

On my side.. Well people in tumblr was screaming crossover between Looking Glass and Jurassic World/Park Crossover so please have a prickly ancient elf and Queen of My Heart. Just two big faves in one frame you know <3
