@Shantia: no, pencil sketch only
Here's the first WIP (flat colour only, I'm learning to render the textures):
EDIT: Second WIP with pauldron texture trial 1

@ceru You can always set the layer you pencil sketch is on to multiply, that will darken pencil lines, but if you want super clean smooth lines without the pencil grain, i would suggest going over you're lines with a hard brush.
for me digitally I made a pencil brush in photoshop to get a sketch down and then I will trace over my lines.
Here is the next wip, added flats

@ aj
Now that you have started colouring things, it occurred to me that Cullen's eyes seem a bit misaligned. Maybe the right eye needs to be just a bit lower? Try flipping the canvas to see whether they look ok.
Other than that, looking great ![]()
@ Ceru
Yay for colouring
I'm liking the pauldron texture. Make sure to choose a light source, though, so you can paint in the highlights and shadows properly ![]()
@AJ: Yay for ginger! Ginger rules! ![]()
@ Tesh: Pauldron is actually the result of testing & abusing smudge & sharpen tool & 2 colours. I managed to make another texture (really like in-game), more 3D but it's very plastic & I might not be able to rend the whole thing 3D since it's gonna be quite cartoony... ![]()
How is the stubbles going? ![]()
WIP 3: Add the hair texture.
I try to make the light source (sun) angled from the left of the picture (mid afternoon?). Left pauldron might need colour adjustment later...

One painful hair at a time
Good news is, I put my WIP on Reddit, and got some really good feedback. So, I am trying to improve the tone and lighting as well. Hopefully this will be finished in a couple of days. Worst case, I just keep Cullen cleanly shaved ![]()
Edit: Stubble progress so far.. ugh

@Ceru Looking good
can't wait to see the finished product.
@aj Love her haircolour.
@Tesh you most be very patient
great job!
I have a few questions. If I am going to have an environment behind my character should I do that before I do my character? Also am I allowed to post pictures that aren't related to Dragon Age?
@ Shantia
Of course you can post pics that are not related to DA
Anything you want to share or need feedback on, feel free to post
It will make any Cullen art that you will make afterwards all the more awesome ![]()
Here, to get the snowball rolling (Loki WIP):

As for environments, it depends on what you are most comfortable with. I generally flesh out the central figure(s) first, and then add in the background. When it comes to detailing, I move across the entire image, alternating between characters and background. This helps me achieve a cohesive look.
Patience is a virtue... or so I am told... goes off muttering.
@Tesh you are soo talented, wow all the details. I have this idea of paintings I want to do, and I hope to find a writer to write a story to it aswell, though that could possibly be hard to find. It is going to include Cullen later too ![]()
I still want to finish Solas before I do any of that though otherwise he will never be finished hehe.

Wow, don't hesitate to ask people in Cullenite forum. I know some who writes a short or long story based on fanarts.
@ Shantia
Thank you so much, you are very sweet
And Ceru is absolutely right - people on the Cullen Thread often write stories to go with a picture
It will be a nice combination. I'd love to help, but I think my writing skills are not as strong as my drawing. Anyway, drop me a line if you'd like my help ![]()
Edit: And yessss, pls finish Solas
The WIP you posted looks so promising ![]()
Thank you Ceru and Tesh for the tip. Will look in there once I have finished my first painting for the project, which will be concept art/reference sheet for my character and some of her belongings really looking forward to do that.
A little progress on Solas, gonna start doing the eys now, I'm so scared, they are not easy to do.

I am dying here, anyone know any good way to do eyelashes without pressure sensitivity? and what brush to use.

Hmm... You might be able to get it done with a brush that only has three spots (I use it for stubble), and then reduce the opacity on your eraser to get rid of areas you don't like. Oooooooor.... Smudge tool. That's how I used to do it when I still used a mouse.
@Tesh thank you for the tip, I will try it later, right now I am fed up with eyelashes hehe.
I got so angry at them I gave Solas eyeliner instead.

Shantia, you can use the smudge tool on the eyeliner to turn it into lashes ![]()
Or... Here are some eyelash brushes by redheadstock:
Wow, those are some fancy lashes
Thank you. Somehow he has ended up looking very dirty, I guess he used too much foundation too
Will try the smudge tool on teh eyeliner and see how it works for me, although i wasn't planning on keeping the eyeliner hehe.
Tried the smudge tool, and wow it worked much better than I thought, this isn't perfect but it was my first try so I am pretty pleased.

Wow you really make him looks very 3D! ![]()
Thank you Ceru, I am still practicing shading, so I am very happy about your compliment ![]()
Just a little update, He has ears and lips now yay. And ugh lips are really hard to do. so I will probably go in and add more detail. Any suggestions on how to improve this painting more is always welcome ![]()

@ Shantia
Looking really great so far
You might wanna throw in some dark blue and violet in the shadows. It seems like he's outside, so the light source is yellow.
Here's an awesome guideline I got on Reddit:

@Tesh Oh thank you, gonna try that right away. And I am quite happy with my progress, feels like I am getting better with every stroke
And you've helped me so much, I am so thankful to you ![]()

D'aww... Glad I could help
And, yes, absolutely, you've made a lot of progress! You have so much potential
It's great that you are enjoying this, and I am always looking forward to seeing more ![]()
So I tried what you showed me, I didn't dare to go too strong, I put it on a soft light layer, I hope that is ok. Even though I went soft it feels like it gave it more life.

@ Shantia
You really did make it pop
And, yes, keep every new addition on a separate layer, until you are happy with it. That way, you have more freedom to experiment without being afraid to mess up your progress. Be bold! Remember - you can always go back to an earlier version, so you don't lose anything. Worst case, you lose a bit of time ![]()
