Oh, that's natural
When I just started using PS, I kept like 20 layers... ![]()

Getting there, maybe a bit too feminine eyebrows? hehe

His eyebrows are a bit more squarish in-game, no?

I really like your Solas portrait, Shantia. It's turned out very good so far. The eyes look a bit off though. Remember that the eye is basically a sphere.
A frowny Cullen by yours truly ... I need to practice him more.

@Onibontan I really like your Cullen, are you planning on colouring it?
And thank you. I am not entirely sure what you meant about the eyes, but I took a guess and edited them. Are they better now? And I've also added some highlights.

@ oni
OoooOooooo Very nice
Maybe I am seeing things, but the ear seems a tad bit large. But, you caught his features very well
Are you going to colour it?

Are you drawing him with pencil?

@Cerulione: It's a photoshop brush. And thanks ![]()
Thanks everyone. Not sure whether I want to colour it. I was thinking I'd make a few sketches to practice our commander and then do a 'real' painting. Meaning full body, with a background and stuff ... It feels kind of intimidating, but the only way to get better is going outside of your comfort zone I guess ![]()
@Shantia: It looks better now! Here's a picture to illustrate what I meant:

A very stupid question: what's causing a cast shadow to appear lighter at the edge?
I was trying to do value study using an orange on white paper & normally it's a mono-sourced light. I just can't understand why there is an area of lighter cast shadow, this shadow stays even if I saw the orange from the other sides. If anyone can explain I'll be very grateful. This is trivial but I just can't understand why & didn't find explanation at google. Thanks in advance ![]()

@ Ceru
Yay for Wikipedia
It's called the Penumbra - the shadow where the light source is only partially obscured ![]()
Here is the explanation on Wiki.
Hope this helps ![]()

Thanks! Oups I forget Wikipedia... ![]()
Maybe that's because the light source is actually a shaded lamp. I tried doing the same thing at noon with sunlight entering from the window & there's no the penumbra. The shadow was clean & the edges was very clear cut. The one I tried to draw was at night so maybe the shaded lamp did something similar to half overcast shadow-half direct...
I guess that I must stop being so obsessed in drawing Cullen & skipping all the basic
, I can't colour properly Cullen's armour or hair on that drawing I was colouring because I don't understand a thing about colour or light. So well, that drawings' put aside & back to the basic & black and white for the moment until the value's OK. ![]()
Anyway, how's Cullen's stubble doing? Any luck? ![]()

@ Ceru
I thought you did a pretty impressive job of colouring Cullen
Knowing the technical aspects can help, but your instinct is just as important
Don't shy away from experimenting.
As for Cullen, I haven't had any time for drawing... I'm swamped at work. But tomorrow will be the last stressful day, and then I can do fun things again ![]()

So question(s) about eyes...
These are Cullen's eyes. I can see the top & bottom lids, and probably what is actually the top plane of the bottom lid (the one in blue). So, we don't actually see the bottom plane of his top lid right?
Also, from what I heard from Proko's video, normally the shading rules that if the light comes from above, top plane of bottom lid got highlighted & bottom plane of top lid got shaded. Here if I'm not mistaken, the top plane of bottom lid got shaded. So the light's coming from below then?
This is the full screenshots, courtesy of fontofnothing. From what I can deduce from the shadows it must be candle light on the table at the left side of him
But then I get more confused. In every single screenshots I get to see his face, I never see the bottom plane of his top lids & everytime it's the top plane of the bottom lid that got shadows. In every single screenshots, even the "outside" screenshots when the lights are supposed to be overcast since they're in the shadow not in direct sunlight. GAAAAAAAAAAH!!!

@Ceru unfortunatley I suck at these kind of things, I went looking at Cullen screenshots that I've taken and I never saw that part either, only a bit when we see him from the side.
And for your drawing, which I think you did an awesome job, the only thing I can see that is off is that you put his waterline (what I think you are calling top plane of bottom lid) too far down and a bit too thick, if it was me, I would put it where you have shaded now. I really hope I saw things right now and didn't offend you
(and I hope you understand, I'm not very good at explainging things in english.)
I put my Solas portrait on the shelf for now I got stuck on it trying to do flowers hehe. I started on my own character instead, am just about to start shading. Her shorts are gonna be jeans, does anyone have any tip on how to accomplish the look of it being jeans?

@Caja: Oh, you're right about the top plane of the bottom lid (how do we call this thing in Eeengleesh actually...?), it should be thinner. Thanks! (Please don't worry to offend me, It's hard to see my own errors so that's why I put that drawings here. Hope that someone else can spot it).

@ Ceru
You have to remember that those are in-game shots. So, there might be light sources that would never be present in real life. I'd recommend to examine your own eyes in a mirror
Study their shape and structure. Where do the shadows fall? Where are the highlights? Where can you actually observe the thickness of the lid, and where is it hidden by lashes?
@ Shantia
I am not particularly good at rendering textures, but as far as jeans are concerned, I would make sure that the folds and creases are well defined (it is a stiff fabric, so it keeps folds), and then go over with a textured brush. The shapes look good so far ![]()

@Shantia: I assume you own at least one pair of jeans? Use them for reference. It's always better to paint/draw things from life.

A question: if we're doing a cartoony artwork on paper & scan them, is it better to do the "inking" (getting the black outline) manually using ink or digitally using PS? Or just push the pencil real hard? I really want to get clean lines

Ceru, professionals have a light box that they do the inking on. They have a rough sketch, and on top of that they place the paper for the final inked drawing. Then they trace with clean lines. Because of their extensive experience, their lines will be very clean.
Without a light box, you can sketch with a blue pencil, and then trace over the lines you want with ink. Later, you can gently erase the initial pencil marks.
Inking in PS will be very clean. It can also be done in Illustrator. In PS you use the pen tool to define the path of your line. Generally you define it as a stroke path.
Hope this helps ![]()

Well, everyone, learn from my mistake... If you want to render something accurately - measure everything AT THE BEGINNING.
The portrait I worked on was off. Very much so. I kept on nudging things left and right, but it still looked wrong. I then took accurate measurements of the reference, and was able to fix things. I am still not completely happy, but I think I managed to improve the drawing. Worst thing is, all those hours I spent refining things, blending everything nicely - out the window.
Oh well. This is pretty common in art: you sometimes have to radically alter your work, or start from scratch ![]()

Thanks, Shantia
But, seriously, I have to stop eyeballing my portraits, and measure everything carefully before I start refining things. The only problem is that it's much more fun to eyeball things
